English Title: Heavenly Body

Mangaka: Kanzaki Takashi

English Publisher: Deux

Description (from Deux Press): Just who does the cute Hazumi belong to?! Roomated with two hot foreigners, Luke and Ray, Hazumi finds himself in the middle of a fight over who gets his body! Hazumi discovers that these foreigners come from lands far more exotic than he could have ever imagined. Luke is an angel from Heaven and Ray is a demon from Hell! Is this fight purely a sexual rivalry, or is there a deeper, secret meaning behind this relentlessly erotic battle?

WARNING: Spoilers!

Well what to say about this manga… The story revolves around two semes, one a demon called Ray and the other an angel called Luke (although oddly enough, Luke’s horny and loud personality would make you think he’s the demon, with Ray’s polite, all smiles and caring nature first makes you think he’s the angel), fighting over a uke called Hazumi. Hazumi’s personality is very sweet, kind, cute, but with an element of naivety that borderlines on dumb. That’s not to say that he’s a dislikeable character, however. It just means his personality matches the common uke (and really, that‘s what makes a uke a uke, right? Besides from taking it up the ass, of course).

Heaven and Hell are in a war to claim Earth. Fearing an all-out battle will destroy the Earth, the angels and demons decide to send a representative from each side to win the heart of Earth’s representative. Luke is Heaven’s representative and Ray is Hell’s representative. Hazumi is Earth’s representative (Luke and Ray explain this by saying he more or less ‘won the lottery’). Hazumi faces a dilemma in which he must choose between Ray and Luke. If Luke wins Hazumi’s heart then Heaven gets Earth, vice versa, if Ray wins Hell gets Earth. But what is the reason these higher beings want Earth? Why, to create a harem of course! Literally, that’s how its later explained. Apparently humans are considered a delicacy to them.

Hazumi struggles to choose between the two. Do they really love him or are they just using him to win the war? Eventually it becomes apparent to the reader that the two really do love Hazumi (if they didn’t I suspect that would put a lot of people off the manga). For example, a line Luke says to Ray: ‘Even if you demons do win this world… you can’t have Hazumi. I won’t allow it.’ The two prove this to Hazumi by saying they no longer care about the war.

In result of this a new representative from Heaven comes to win Hazumi for the war, his name being Aziel. Aziel’s personality consists of being a sadist on the outside and a masochist on the inside. Luke was once his pupil (Aziel taught him all his wooing techniques), and it quickly becomes apparent that Aziel has a slight obsession over the other angel. Aziel later on claims to be in love with Hazumi after the human hits him in the face (brought on by Aziel letting the whole harem secret out). The story ends with Hazumi ultimately choosing Luke. However, since Luke isn’t a representative anymore, Aziel and Ray (after being convinced by the Aziel) stay to ‘win the war’.

And they all lived happily ever after.

The book also contains a one-shot called A Ballad For You. This consists of a sadistic uke called Tono and seme called Ihara who’s a… well a sort-of masochist. Ihara goes through some mental aguish where he breaks up with Tono because he believes the uke only likes to tease him. This S&M relationship can’t really be love, can it?

The last one-shot is called Beloved. It involves a uke called Hibiki and a seme called Toshifumi. Their relationship is a lot like prostitution, with Toshifumi calling Hibiki up for sex. Hibiki quickly falls in love with Toshifumi but struggles to come to terms with it as he believes Toshifumi only uses him as a replacement for someone called Masafumi. However, Toshifumi doesn’t know his uke’s name, so when they make love is it really Masafumi he’s thinking about, or in his head does Masafumi mean Hibiki?

Overall I like this manga. It’s something silly and not to be taken seriously, good for light reading. It’s not terribly original, and I don’t particularly like A Ballad for You (perhaps if the one-shot were longer and we got to know about the characters, my opinion would change), however there is enough humour and feel-good moments to make it worth reading.
