I read this manga bwcause everyone said it was a classic, everyone reviews also said that this manga has a significant abundance of misunderstandings that occur. I personally hate misunderstadnidngs in my manga cause that feels like a way to artificially add discord in a plot. Regardless it was funny a few times, but around chapter 50, it became very stale. Im dropping it for now, ill read it when i feel that i need something to look at when my brain goes in air plane mode

It's pretty good in the romance area. Sure it's slow romance but you'll be happy about how things turned out. If your one of those people who like older women relationships this is up your alley. The age gap isn't too big but it still effects the characters. I always get comfortable when reading something by Rumiko . It's not too long but you'll feel like so much happened. Recommended for a binge read.
Been hearing about this for quite sometime. And decided to give it a read when Viz media announcement for the CE.
Similar to the the author last work, inuyasha, And Ranma 1/2 the 2 love interest are the bickering couple. Same with this one.
I actually like that the main heroine is a widow, something that is rarely written in shows these days. Godai is an idiot nothing new but his development as a characters grows into an interesting one and I come to really love this couple.
The tenants that live in the apartment, is what brings the comedy. They do tend to messing with Godai a lot and give advice to Kyoko. I enjoy them but there are sometimes they can be a bit too much at times.
But Still....despite it flaws, I still enjoy this series. It has it problems, especially with Kyoko not trusting Godai and all these misunderstandings all the time. In fact it might drive you insane probably too the very end. But it definitely had it fun and cute moments for me, and I would certainly read it again. And again. And again. It may not be what modern standards are but for its time, I definitely would agree that it a classic.

I read the manga as i watched the series. So if i mention something that you don't remember it probably means it was in the other medium.
Maison Ikkoku is a series that revolves around 5 characters. The 2 main characters., the MMC and FMC who are pretty likeable and the 3 side characters that are the worst things in existence. The FMC moves into the house called the maison Ikkoku and becomes the new manager as i think it was cuz it was owned by her recently deceased husband, The MMC falls in love with her first sight and now we have a romcom scenario. An episode romcom that lasts a whopping 96 episodes.
Let me talk about the technical aspect of the series first. The series adapts 1 chapter per episode on average. (until like the last 25 episodes). However im not upset by this as the pacing is actually very decent. It doesn't feel like they padded an individual episode rather there was more content that they animated. As such im very impressed by the animation directors to be able to extend 1 chapter into an episode without it feeling like its the one piece anime. So props to them. I really liked the music as well. Apparently the OP/ED is iconic which just solidifies my opinion that people have horrible taste in music. The OST in between the series is really. Especially the one that sounds similar to the Pink Panther Theme. I really liked that part. Despite being 96 episodes long and adapting 15 volumes or 161 chapters it has filler episodes.... I mean the filler episodes were fine. They weren't a deal breaker at least not anymore than the average *bad* episode that the series had. The series also skips some chapters?! i have updated mangaupdates on this https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1051 Which shows which chapters were skipped. So if you want more maison Ikkoku but not want to see the same old same old. Just read these chapters.
But i know what your thinking. An episodic series like this is carried by its characters. So what do i think about the characters? Well besides the love drunk characters, all them were awful in every sense. I liked the MMC, I liked the FMC, I liked the love interests as well. but the 3 dug trio are fucking garbage. There is this Mom character that annoys the main characters insults him constantly and is downright ruined the feeling of the show. She helped him like 3 times in the whole series and was the worst mom on the planet for 300 times more. She also straight up tells her kid to eat some noodles instead so she can go off to drinking beer. Im not saying this series can't be funny but moments like these aren't funny they just feel abusive and generally awful. There is also another character called Akemi who is the stereotypical slut character that comes normal in every romcom anime. But she's naked for like majority of the series so im willing to let go some of her pathetic inhumaness. The problem lies with the weirdo man. He is just a cunt. Repeatedly abusing the MMC. Blackmailing him, taking advantage of him and just overall being a legitimate cunt. These 3 characters straight up ruined this series for me.
The main duo were however much more likeable... mostly. Sometimes the FMC's hypocrisy annoyed me. As this series had only like a couple you know 1 or 2 misunderstandings, you know just a couple. However she fully expected the MMC to forgive her and yet refused to forgive the MMC. This happens multiple times but where it really grinded my gears was near the ending. The ending itself was fine but the buildup to the ending where everything gets resolved and stuff. That was way too long. And purely done just cuz they needed to extend the series. This wasn't an anime exclusive problem but might've been more of an issue since you know the anime in general was longer. The MMC wasn't really any better repeatedly trying to steal a kiss from his sleeping beauty (took me 4 hours to make this joke laugh). For real, its quite creepy that he did this like 3 times. Granted he learned his lesson but it was still annoying. The side love interests is a bit more complicated. there are 4 side love interests. 2 of them, Highschooler and ex-worker, in love with MMC, 1 of them (the tennis player) in love the FMC and 1 of them, royalty, in love with the tennis player. I don't really think there is a shape for this but lets call it a love heptagon. I actually originally liked all 4 of them. They were all enjoyable had there own *goals* in a sense and were much more calm the highschooler aside. I actually liked the ex-worker quite a lot but i didn't like after half way she just sort of faded into the background when she showed up again it was only to sow discord which honestly wasn't even her fault really. I did dig the highschooler but then she become unlikeable once again. The royalty chick was pretty adorable until how her romance was resolved with the tennis player. That one was just bad..... Like this is the kinda shit you can't get away with today lmao.
The story is pretty simple you know. Get the girl type series. The comedy has its moments. Most of the time it fell flat. The animation is nice. I don't really care for old or new animation. I don't have a preference. Just that it shouldn't be CG.... most of the time. Really the strongest part was the romance when it happened. It was really watching the 2 main characters slowly fall in love with each other. I wished there was more on the romantic front but amazingly the manga actually gives you this. Which is why i urge those people who liked the series to read the skipped chapters.
Apparently this series started or popularized the romantic trend or romcom trend. As such a lot of moderen series take from this. Sadly they take the wrong shit cuz it has 2 things worth taking from. Another series Bokura wa minna kawaisou which did the under 1 roof thing. It had a weaker heroine but the side character didn't piss me off every other second. Infact they were very likeable. also sexy. If you guys want to watch or read a good under the roof romcom this does a much better job of it. Albeit the ending in maison Ikkoku is still better.
TLDR: the story can only go so far. In a series like the backbone is the characters. and i just don't think the main 2 characters who were likeable are enough to protect this series. Overall i'm disappointed. It had its moments. The play by play moments were too poor. The ending was good but not enough for me to say that it saved the series. When i finished it i was glad that its over. 4/10 Maybe Rumiko's other works are better prospects

I finally decided to finally give this one a go, and I got to say, I really enjoy it. The characters are fun, lively and enjoyable while i personally enjoy the gang that lives in Maison ikkoku they do some thing that does rub me off in annoyance but most of the time, the keep the series entertaining.

The romance is this is quite fun. As that’s the highlight for me is when things do you get with romance. Those are probably my favorite moments in the story.

While most people consider this a classic, I personally don't care for it. Don't get me wrong, I love romance, but this story is just a lesson in frustration. For starters, there's just way too many misunderstandings. It's one misunderstanding after another. It gets old because people just don't have this many misunderstandings. To make matters worse, they could be cleared up so easy but the woman just runs away immediately every-time not giving anyone a chance to explain. Most people would at least give the other party a dew seconds to explain whats going on but she takes off like a race horse everything. She should have a little more faith in the guy.

Maison Ikkoku is filled with comedy, romance, drama, and misunderstandings. Though I will say it's frustrating to read & even watch (I recommend the anime of this as well), but in a good way. It didn't stop me from reading or watching. The characters are enjoyable. The comedy is fun when not breaking up serious moments. (Only a few times it works) The romance is great (especially in the last 10 chapters.) All in all, probably 1 of my favorite romances of all time now. I'm going to break this down by character. Now I apologize if I mention things in the anime that aren't in the manga, but the plot is basically the same aside from filler in the anime really. They are both mixed in my mind because I watched it and then found the manga and read it.

He probably has the biggest development of any character in the story. He goes from being a wimp madly in love with this girl to being one of the greatest guys in the story. From Ronin to pre-school teacher, he goes on a journey to find his place. Calling him an unlucky protagonist is an understatement. At first, there are times when he's being an idiot where he kinda deserves it, but towards the end, he hits a massive unlucky streak that causes him a lot of shit. Just to name a few, getting 2 kids dumped on him while their mother runs off to find a man (she does, but still) & losing out on a job because he helped a pregnant lady, the list goes on. In the end, he achieves his goal by getting Kyoko who fell in love with at first sight.

While they did care for Godai, they took their teasing a bit far at times, usually to the point where it was cruel. When that happened, they went from being the loveable drunks to the annoying alcoholics.

Kozue was Godai's on and off again "girlfriend". She always misunderstands what Godai is trying to tell her and takes it too far. They dated, but it usually consisted of them just hanging out. Towards the end, you hadn't seen her in awhile and she gets proposed to be a co-worker. She is in love with Godai, but he says he doesn't have feelings for her, but would have most likely fallen for her if he hadn't met Kyoko. She gets mad at him over a misunderstanding and accepts the proposal. The thing is she gets mad at him for "seeing" someone else, but technically I found her anger to be kinda bullshit. I mean she was clearly seeing this other guy on and off like with Godai even to the point where he proposes to her. They reconcile and she tells Godai that the guy loves her, but it seems like she still likes Godai and will just get married and try and fall in love with her husband. That whole final plot with her seemed weird to me.

She falls for Godai when he was a student teacher at her school. She causes him a lot of problems, but is a sweet girl. In the end, it shows her in college and she still loves Godai.
Mitaka

Godai's look a like. No, really, they look a like. He's Godai's love rival for Kyoko. The thing is Kyoko never had any feelings for him and just saw him as a good friend to hang out with. Similar to Kozue and Godai. His final plot deals with him being arranged to marriage and finally gives in. Though he does actually fall for the girl Asuna who he gets arranged with. His teeth sparkle. His kid's teeth sparkle. His dog's teeth sparkle. Asuna was a great girl and I'm glad she ended up with Mitaka.

Kyoko is let's say a mixed bag. Nothing really bad, but her emotions tend to be kinda frustrating. So early on, before coming to Maison Ikkoku. Kyoko was married to her highschool teacher, Soichiro. (That name is a fucking nuisance to Godai and it makes sense why.) They knew each other for years, and when Kyoko was 20, they got married. They were married for 6 months and then Soichiro dies. It destroys her. A few months later, she decides to become the manager of Maison Ikkoku because her father-in-law was the landlord. That's when she met Godai. She has incidents with Godai at first which kinda make her come off as a bitch at times. She thinks Godai is groping her at the beach when it's just some jellyfish. She stands him up after he works up the courage to ask her out on a date, and then they have a moment at the end, he tries to kiss her only for her to slap him. She offers to make Godai dinner for helping out her niece which makes him so happy. Well, turns out she just feeds him her dead husband's favorite meal and it makes her think about Soichiro. He comes up a lot. She's hung up on Soichiro for a good bit of the story, which in the beginning makes sense, but even after she falls for Godai, there are lingering feelings. One of the most frustrating parts is when Godai goes through all of this stuff to find out about this rock that she found. (anime only, but both the manga and anime add important stuff to her character that shouldn't be ignored) Well turns out in the end, the rock was a Christmas present on her first and last one with Soichiro. Godai being the great guy that he is tells her. After awhile, she becomes open to getting remarried and even shows that she's in love with Godai, but the problems with Soichiro still exist. In manga, after he finally confesses to her for real, she takes him to a Love Hotel. She brings up Soichiro and Godai can't get it up. Godai's problem is that it makes him insecure whens she talks about her dead husband because he doesn't know what she's thinking. She claims that he doesn't trust her even though he loves her and that she loves him which you think, okay. You have proven that your feelings are for Godai now, but the thing is a few chapters later, Godai finds her crying over Soichiro's items. She finally moves on and says her final goodbye to Soichiro after hearing Godai's speech at his grave, but for her to be mad at Godai for being insecure about her makes her come off as hypocritical. She does love Godai, and apparently had fallen in love with him early on, but this conflicting feelings and being hung up on Soichiro caused a lot of conflict. She finally married Godai and they have a daughter at the end.

The fucking dog. Her husband's dog who she named after her husband after his death because the dog responded to the name. She had an unhealthy relationship with this dog. The conflict towards the end with Godai being insecure gets brought on because she says the dog's name. Well, she gets mad because she finds in silly that he would tense up by hearing the name. Well, it's not the name, it's what it represents, your dead husband who you show that you have lingering feelings for while supposedly being in love with Godai. It never gets brought up that being the reason either.
This was a wonderful story with ups and downs, and the final chapters/episodes make the journey all worthwhile.

Rumiko can draw, design and is famous for starting strong but then never really closing a series after spinning wheels for volumes on end. This early work though has a very decent start, a somewhat dead middle that made me almost quit the manga due to unending repetitive nonsense and a highly drawn-out and predictable love polygon but I will admit that the series finishes reasonably strong once that vortex of crap is left behind. The narrative also has a bit of a problem with tone and the original pitch for the manga sounds better as Rumiko wanted to move on to the other couples after resolving the main romance in a timely fashion. Mitaka´s romance is further way more engaging and Godai is a pretty boring protagonist but beggars can´t be choosers. I honestly can´t recommend any of her other works due to the reasons stated above and her next best pieces, namely One-pound Gospel and Mermaid Saga, are only a 6/10 as they also deteriorate over time.
Read them if you must but check out Living Game (8/10) first as that reasonably similar 90s and apartment romance never overstayed its welcome and actually bothered to explore a relationship over time.

I read this manga during my university days and simply loved it.
Besides the fact that the series is full of fun characters, a lot of Godai's experiences resonated with me at the time:
e.g. I formed a close friendship from day 1 with 2 of my classmates. We spent a ridiculous amount of time together, attending classes, skipping classes, hanging out after class and taking part time jobs together. Reminds me of Godai and Sakamoto's friendship.
My study's began to suffer as I found myself studying something I had no interest in. Mirrors Godai's ronnin status at the beginning of the manga.
The feeling of no longer being a kid but not yet an adult (not being taken seriously by people and society yet), working part time jobs and club activities are all things I could identify with.
This is by far Rumiko Takashi's best series in my opinion.
