poor Chu. he's so confused and a very unreliable narrator (not as bad as kyon, but close)

i really couldn't get into this when they first started translating it so i waited until they finished the fourth novel before i started trying to read it. at first its confusing, but it gets pretty interesting once he actually starts school. the MC is clueless but his internal comments had me cracking up by the end of the second novel. once his thoughts get beyond "waaaa, i'm going to die!" they get funnier (i feel sorry for XueZhang). the confusion and mystery behind who and what the MC will be is a huge part of what makes the story addicting. that and the humor.

Chu is pretty useless for the first few novels, other than comic relief, and he doesn't do much but get dragged around into situations where he has no clue whats going on. Whats more, he seems willfully idiotic when it comes to learning about the world he's stepped into. every time someone starts to explain something his eyes glaze over and he starts thinking about how boring it is and how he wont be able to understand it. for someone who faces one life threatening situation after the other, he doesn't seem very interested in learning how to protect himself.
everyone around his is so awesome that our MC actually has a complex about it. its not until the school competition that we see him start to change a little.

i gave up waiting for scans and hunted down the raws for this to finish it and UL II (part 1) using machine translations and all i can say is wow. its much faster paced and darker towards the end of season one. UL season II has just as much quirky humor as season I but Chu has done some growing up and is more proactive. he has some very interesting powers develop and of course, there's always the 5-colored rooster head, who is great for a good laugh.
VERY good read.

Entertaining in a random way

Completely agree with the reviewer below me who mentioned that the main character is useless. He's totally useless. Fortunately, despite being unlucky in terms of events and as screamy as a bad shoujo heroine, he's actually amazingly lucky in his choice of acquaintances and friends. He also has a rather amusing way of narration, making this LN actually rather enjoyable.

The first few chapters really slammed me hard because it was difficult to actually understand what's going on, but like the MC, you kind of learn to skate along after a while and ignore the stuff that doesn't make sense. It's a little like reading an alternate version of Harry Potter, made on drugs.

It also updates every week, which is rather nice.

I've read in comments that story starts to pick up at around Vol 5 or so. I've only read 2 volumes so i will not give a final rating yet, but you will have to be reaaaaly patient to keep up with it.
The protagonist is totally useless, who is dragged around, constantly crying or screaming. The world is a total chaos. Some things randomly pop up without explanation or explanation that totally does not make any sense. The MC also does not understand anything from it, but he also does not make any effort to change this. He's simply: I haven't understood a thing you said but oh well, let's leave it at that.
Temp rating: 2/10
