Another great work from Asano, another mediocre translation from John Werry

I really like the story. Too bad the translation was done by John Werry from Viz. Just like his work on Golden Kamui, there are parts that make you scratch your head. I wish they take more time to do QC and polishing.

Obviously Excellent, but it Scares Me

Maybe I'm too soft-hearted, but the spectacle of these lovable characters, close friends who obviously love each other, living under the shadow of an immense hovering alien space ship, makes me feel continual dread on their behalf. They are going about their standard teenage lives while in unrelenting danger, from above and below. The spaceship above is terribly dangerous in an utterly unknown way (It could do anything to Tokyo anytime!). The humanity around them is dangerous in the familiar ways we all know so well (stupid governmental decision-making and greedy business hustling in response to a situation neither of those interest groups even begins to know how to handle).

After 25 chapters, I just can't take the dread any more. But from his previous work I know that Asano Ino is a great storyteller and a very smart dude, so I'm putting this work on my Must Read list—for later.

If the girls survive to the end, I'll read this. If they don't, I won't. I had to break off reading "Oyasumi Punpun" for similar reasons. When confronting creators who have a dark world view, one has to carefully estimate how much of their influence one can take.

It's like District 9 mixed with Heathers. Does it make any sense? If it doesn't, it still does. Trust me.
The story follows several young, quirky girls as they face the usual late teen problems: school, future, love... and alien spaceships looming over the city. Their young adult uncertainty intertwines with the uncertainty of living in the constant fear of war and desctruction. Sometimes they seem ordinary. Sometimes it's like they're the aliens. There's a lot of social media commentary here and from chapter one I'm having this feeling that the payoff is going to be amazing. Well, it already is. A must read if you like multi-layered meaning, abstract humour and quirky characters going off into preposterous monologues. I really do believe this could be Asano's best work once it's finished. 10 for visibility and for the fact I literally jump whenever there's an update.
