Unsatisfactory harem manga, according to all the 1's...
by Lost Rabbit

Rating: 8.0  / 10.0
The harem genre in manga and anime can immediately be summed up with readers/viewers assuming it to be one guy surrounded by (at least) three girls, with some kind of attraction within the relationships. This can be seen from the sheer number of series where ecchi, romance and comedy are all slapped onto it, and where the subgenre "reverse harem" exists to depict one girl surrounded by (at least) three guys.

With this harem series though, we have a very unconventional approach to the usual mold, where rather than have this in the perspective of the main guy, we're shown the perspective of one of his lovers/wives: As the MC, she's unlucky with past (and present) love relationships, has nowhere to really go with her life, and constantly freaks the fuck out toward being married to such a "Master of Suave" alongside two other girls that basically dislike her very existence. Being the MC with these shitty qualities living through such a shitty life, I can understand why there's currently a ratings ratio of 32 10's to 20 1's here on the page, as it's hard to take much out of this overall plot. But then again, because it doesn't follow the usual harem mold, we're not handed the typical series that revolves around either the power of love and friendship fighting against evil, or just episodic slice of life silliness; we're handed a dramatic slice of life that begs a difficult question, "Can love be found within a very nontraditional/polygamous relationship, especially where the circumstances forces these individuals to stay together forever?"

The answer might as well be a definite "NOT A CHANCE," but I guess that's what makes the series so fascinating: This burning curiosity to see whether or not love will somehow win out against these heavily stacked odds against it. As much as I can agree that the pacing can be pretty slow, it does a fine job in having readers desire for more, without every chapter being a bloody cliffhanger during the unfolding of its messy drama. The art too is worth appreciating, as the somewhat "realistic" style fits nicely for setting up an atmosphere of either complete seriousness or goofiness (srsly dat gorilla tho).

The "I wouldn't exactly recommend this to everyone" line is a clearly stupid and overused statement to say with just about anything, but in this case, it very much does apply to the avid readers of harem manga with it not fitting the mold and all. However, I'd absolutely recommend to at least try the first several chapters, so you can get a good taste of this incredibly fascinating clusterfuck of a story...

I've been reading this for the last 2 or 3 years and happy it's over. At times it was a long and and annoying story but I'm glad I stuck with it. It would get a bit slow and I would want to quit but when the drama started my interest would be renewed. If you are thinking of reading go ahead and do it, it was worth it at the end.

Too many questions and vague answers - SPOILERS!!

Decided to give this a chance. The most disappointing thing is that I found myself asking more questions after every single thing I read. The questions were either answered in a way that may have been implied or were never answered. NON (mangaka) wanted to create a meaningful read but with so many unanswered questions, even though it was put in on purpose, the manga instead turned out to be very shallow. Here are some questions/comments I can address (even though I have A LOT more):

First off: The idea to write about this topic was interesting but it was not justified. Throughout this entire manga, NON was not able to prove that the purpose of a harem marriage is beneficial. It would have been more powerful if there was more contradicting friends, family, and bystanders so that they can prove their relationship and give it more meaning. This marriage was highlighted to be the main story and NON was desperate give it meaning by adding small facts like Ryuu has a "dark past" which was never expanded on.

Second: Madoka had intentions to steal Ryuu away from his family but it was very brief and ended up making Madoka look like a homewrecker instead of making viewers see that she is someone who truly believes in monogamy. She made a good temporary "villain", something that this manga did not have until the moment that Ryuu recruited her to be his manager. It had great potential to be emotionally powerful yet loving, but the arc had to stop so that Koharu can "shine". Disappointing.

Third: Every character had beliefs, which was what made them so lovable. However, NON focused more on the humor and light-hearted side of them while leaving all of their dark-sides/pasts behind (with a few fair mentions of their backstory). After awhile, the manga dragged because it focused on an unjustified marriage the focal point was petty jealousy with the other sister-wives. There were a few events in the story that I felt were underwhelming and would have enriched the story if there was more "meat to the bones." Great examples include:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Koharu's father's death & funeral, Koharu runs away from the marriage, Rinn's birth, the Date harem wedding, the return of all of the wives at the end, etc.
Subpar buildup only to have the actual event be thrown out the window with a few panels indicating that the event happened.

At best, Hare-Kon is a manga that gives an average outlook of what polygamy may look like in a marriage: the insecurities, as well as the love, that accompany a relationship with sister-wives and a single husband. At its worst, the manga shows a pitiful relationship only glued together by nonsensical humor, a false reality, a shallow promise of "family," and sex scenes. The realities outside of the marriage and the scrutiny it would have faced are left completely unexplored. Still a good read and character development is still something to enjoy but just don't expect to read about a deep emotionally-torn story. Good luck.

@ZoddGuts, I love how you think that people who rated poorly did so because the main character's gender is female. By assuming this, you automatically let us know that you didn't read any actual decent reviews and simply looked at "bad" ratings to justify your own.

Potrays a harem relationship in a realistic way

This manga realistically deals with a harem relationship (after chapter 70 onwards), before that was like any other ecchi romance harem manga.

Because of its realism, the manga has polarising reviews amongst the readers. I love this manga, love the characters and this art is gorgeous! Made me miss japan just by the mangaka adding typical scenes in a typical japanese town and its cityscape.

From the sea of harem mangas out there, this manga is definitely one of a kind. The readers felt connected with the main female character Koharu and always hope that she would find her own happy ending.

The readers experienced rollercoaster of emotions of her own experiences being in that relationship, some to the point where we have readers who would dropped the manga halfway because they felt strongly to her. And reading those reactions online, amazes me. It shows that this manga has substance, its realistic and people shows strong emotions over the drama the mangaka put into this manga.

That shows a lot. This manga is definitely recommended but not everyone's cup of tea. Beware.

About the Plot

Okay so I really love hare kon and I just kinda wanted to share my thoughts on it.
The story of hare kon, (from how I see it) is in layers, when you are young we don’t think things through and love is just careless, fickle (looks at takeda). Everyone has a different way/concept of how true love can be.
But you see that’s the thing with this story, true love will find its place, but in order for that to happen you have to truly know yourself first. When you think about it, ryuu himself “shares” his love with his 3 wife’s yet it makes you think if he is truly being honest with himself (which he obviously isn’t).
Looking at koharu, she just wanted a simple one on one marrage and yet she does not has a strong belief of that either (with men cheating on her in the past). Going back to ryuu here, the first wife want to take care of someone and just have fun, his second wife is possessive, jealous and just confuses her admiration (when ryuu used to play the piano) as love. As for koharu as the third wife, she was his first love~ I mean this story has a lot of room to develop deeper into the plot, but I mean I think that ryuu and koharu would have true love in the end~
Also people seem to be ignorant about the deeper part of the plot as well. It's also pretty realistic I mean the birth rates in japan are low irl and yet all people complain that this manga is garbage, horrible etc.. Like really?? I mean if you don't like it don't read it, it's as simple as that tbh.

so far it's alright. amazing art. no unbelievable characters. slowish start to a seemingly long ride. feels fresh with how the perspective is from a female of a harem.

my only concern is that the scope of the story might be too shallow where the issues will start to feel repetitive/dull fast, unless the author handles it well.

did i mention it had amazing art?

It's so blunt when it comes to the truth of the world. Read RAWs through ch 134. It is kind of slow, but somewhat realistic. It's a seinen, it requires thought. It's not H where everything is quick and fast to serve the guys' needs no matter what. It requires a little more reality. And most of the times the girl will get on your nerves because you might have the notion of "nothing is free in life" However, the bigger question this seinen arises is, why do we think she should repay in that fashion. I totally do, but then...idk is it something expected of both genders?

Ok tbh I hate harems, especially ecchi harems. So when I started this I figured I would drop it after a few chapters.. boy, am I happy I was wrong x3

In the beginning, I hated the idea of all 3 wives sharing a husband.

In fact, I even hated wives #1&2 AND the husband lmao

But what I LOVE about this manga is that you grow to open your mind to the polygamous marriage with the mc as you read on.

I binged it and I loved it & I can't wait till the next update <3.. totally recommend

PS koharu is best girl fite me

Firstly, awesome art-rarely do I come across manga with art that consistently amazes me; not only are the characters so wonderfully drawn, but also the background on every page that is just so intricately detailed and beautiful,so props to the author for that.
Plot is unconventional and may not be for everyone, but I stuck with this since its first scanlation and it just always draws me in, its realistic take on characters' emotions and relationships is what made me appreciate it despite its controversial themes. And unlike others who either dislike Koharu or Ryuu or both, I happen to really love their scenes. Their interactions are the best part and it's definitely a fresh and realistic approach to couples in adult-oriented manga.
Do give this a try. Very fun read overall.
