Wish Fulfillment Wetdream
by HikariBun
July 23rd, 2014, 2:25pm
Rating: 4.5  / 10.0
What this novel is, is the realization of a game/fantasy fanboy's biggest wish fulfillment dream. MC is ridiculously overpowered and gifted by the highest degree complete with a harem. There is a specific sort enjoyment to be had in here, even if it's clearly written for the tastes of young guys and not so much for women like me.

Except.

Except for the fact this kind of power fantasy has been done many, many times in online novels/LNs and done better. Perhaps not this exact premise, but many variants thereof. Re: Monster is repetitive and the writing is as rudimentary as it gets. MC is deliberately kept a blank sheet with very little personality other than being badass. Skills are listed with such frequency most of them lose all meaning and the plot is little more than kill monsters, learn skill, train army, with maybe introduction to new characters, rinse and repeat.

If you want to read a wish fulfillment fantasy with at least a bit of nuance, go read The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. I can't speak for the quality of its English translation, but I have read the original, and it is just has better writing than this. The MC actually has an interesting personality, the world fleshed out, and the plot is always steadily heading somewhere with the MC's growth distributed in a way so that you actually care about each new development. The girls, too, while they are all still labeled as beauty, cute, etc. are actual characters. Not so much here.

Interesting

I decided to check out the novel after reading the manga, and I must say I'm hooked. Usually I don't bother with novels because the writing is just too boring, regardless of how interesting the core plot might be. This novel has a simplistic writing style that presents a very interesting story. No reason to not read it.

You need to understand - It's supposed to be an all-covering diary, and is written as such..

I'd say this one is really good. It takes on a new way of narrating(which might not please everyone) that gives insight into the story as if you're actually reading the MC, Rou's diary. Due to that, it's quite repetetive at times, but that makes more sence than that something new and unique would happen each and every day! I mean, most novel include long time skips, because of that limit, but since this novel is meant to resemble a diary, there'll always be an entry, even if it's sometimes really short, or really ordinary.

In that aspect, you could almost say that it reads like a Slice of Life with a bit of killing and strengthening every now and then, and the occasional eradication of a powerful foe or at times even an army.

One of it's weaknessess, except for the repetetiveness of it's format, is that some if not all of the non-monster characters, that should have a normal tempo of existence, are drawn into Rou's tempo, which contains the things other works contain in a few years in a couple of months!

Secondly, Rou's own tempo. He's a human reborn, with a (more or less) human mind! It's quite strange that he acts as if his tempo is completely normal. I mean, sure, he was probably one of the most elite humans of his time when it came to exactly tempo, but there should still be some type of 'lag', atleast the first week or two.

Thirdly, the language. The translation is done by normal people that happen to know the original language, not authors, so if you're someone that love reading stories more for the linguistic skill of the author rather than the story, this novel is not for you!

Despite these weaknesses, I'll give it a solid 8, since I'm a person that doesn't give a shit about anything but the actual story, and for the extremely interesting universe this work shows me. Still, the manga would beat this novel by far, if it wasn't for the fact that a few of the characters have been turned into some kind of comic-relief dudes, and that the release speed of the scanlated versions are bellow one chapter per month..

Good but stale

I read this a while ago but and never commented on this issue, but it felt really like a really dry read. When something comes up where normally would intrigue the reader, the author just glances over it in a few short sentences. I forgot the exact key moments but there were plenty where I was like "oh shit" then... nothing happened, the author did a short summary of what happen and that was it, it moved on. Maybe it isn't the author and it is poor translation, but I don't believe that to be the case. Prepare yourself to get major 'blue balls' when you read this. When shit hits the fan half the time it gets cleared up within a matter of sentences. Though I have these issues the overall story intrigues me, and while I may not enjoy the writing style of the author, the story is still decent I think.

@Mhaaad:
I feel you bro, I feel you. The manga was so interesting at first, that I decided to read the novel translation to satisfy my hunger if it, and then boom. Chapter 3. Still the same repetitive plot, with the same aspiration as Arc and LMS. While I'm not saying it's a bad thing. But then again, nor it's a good thing.

So yeah, if you like the LMS or Arc, and you want something to read with the same structure, plot, stock character, but somewhat, a better premise, then go for it.

But if you want something with the quality of Monster, Vinland Saga, or even "the Gamer" (which is a decent and interesting manhwa about game), move a long then.

Nothing to see here.

Repetitive scenario

It's the first time I read a novel, all because the manga was so damn good that I couldn't wait! especially when the manga chapters are Monthly!

But, I got bored reading this story after it progressed. there is events but not as much as you want it to be.
Soooo much repetition -> wake up, practice, talk to someone, kill something then sleep.

if you got nothing better to do but to read a novel, then read it,
It will hook you up if you like games.

Repeats itself over and over

After first few chapters the story seems to turn into endless repetition of "massacred enemies / got a crapton of new ultra mega super powerful cool cheat level abilities or items / played around with subordinates or slaves".

Good fun, but not some great writing

It’s pretty good for webnovel, it’s not as bad as one might expect and not as good as one might hope.

If can overlook it’s flaws for the pure enjoyment factor and you do enjoy reading it that it’s pretty good.

If you’re not that into it than the flaws are REALLY going to bother you.

Honestly for webnovel you could do worse. And it actually feels less repetetive than some other, more fleshed out webnovels. It’s not going to wow you though, that’s for sure.

Lacking in every aspect

To sum it up this is a wet dream for the stereotypical chunni hikikomori otaku who lives in the mom's basement, no offense meant.

Its just bad, really bad, unless this is the kinda story thats up your alley.

Protagonist is basically a Mary Sue. His character lacks depth, one-dimensional. Bland and dull. Disgustingly poor character design.
Even his companions have a more colorful character than him despite not being in the limelight often. Thats not to say the secondary characters are fleshed out, they're still quite bad, maybe because theres too many of them. Moreover character development was given the superficial treatment which is disappointing.

World building is horrible too. Unoriginal and half baked. No effort was put into to create a fully developed living breathing world.

Storyline is haphazard while the plot so far is mediocre or aimless rather. Seems like its going with the go with the flow which is not how you create a story for readers. Overall shallow plot and does not engage the reader. Fanfics are notorious for being bad and solely to feed ones delusional self indulgence, this novel brings it to another level.

I'm open to varying themes in books, no matter if its cliche or morally sensitive and that goes for character alignments but over here, author is pushing character development and plot to specific directions just for the sake of having it like that. Theres not core agenda, motivation, driving force behind it all. Its frustrating to read.

In summary, absolutely no substance, a mile wide and barely ankle deep. Not something meant for the intellectual. The manga adaptation is even worse so don't bother.
