To be honest i was born with no skills and I have seen bunch of people who are perfect at everything they do even if they had school they would not put any effort and they would be perfect at it, well this manga made me feel like I can do anything, is something weird but they only got one quirk and they need to train it so it becomes an asset for when they become a hero. You might think DBZ, Naruto, one piece are the masters over there and I won't say no to them, I like the old school too, but i think if a manga makes you feel something then it means the author did a good job.

Characters are the essence of any story and any manga, in this case the chars are the worst aspect by far, maybe some secondary ones are decent but for the most part the main ones are just a bunch of spoiled and one way or another, annoying brats, above all Bakugo that's can't seam to say something without shouting and insulting and the main char is like a pathetic version of Gon from HxH and just like that retard, instead of having to pay for his narrow-mindedness, selfishness and rashness he's priced and gets his way. As the story progresses you'd expect some maturity and development but so far and over 100 chapters in I'm sadly disappointed, and I think I'm bored of it already (140ch give or take).
In short, it's got some good moment and good fights but I find it's constantly held back and even spoiled by those chars.

A huge cast of characters, all have their personalities and faults and quirks (pun intended) with a thick plot that keeps getting thicker and thicker.
Layer after layer, failures and growth, and sometimes no growth happens! All characters are different, and they all have varied outlooks, goals and train of thoughts!
At first I didn't have any expectations for this manga, but now that I am deep in it, O just can't stop it! It really deserves all the praise in the world!

And the universe of this story is so well developed that you feel like it is reality! I love how the author keeps writing down informations about that world on extra pages and as side notes, it really shows the extent of his imagination,

It's a pretty big problem of mine where whichever anime or manga I'm currently watching or reading is suddenly my new, absolute favorite of all time. The fandoms I'm constantly in are always increasing, you could even say it's a bad habit of mine. But this series? It's totally on a different level of "I'm definitely addicted".When I first ever heard of Boku no Hero Academia, I wasn't interested at all, but mostly it was because I was unconvinced of the originality in the plot and the fact that the main character seemed like such a joke and really quite laughable (his eyes! his EYES!). Looking back, I think it was a pretty stupid reason, but the point is, no one should judge this anime solely by its appearance. Yes, it's about becoming a hero, and yes, the main character starts off as a wuss and gradually matures and becomes amazingly strong.. but BNHA.. these superpowers are defined in such a way that they seem as if they are just one step ahead of present-day reality. And they are.
I, too, hated that Izuku Midoriya was a crybaby, and then suddenly met the greatest hero in the world, thus beginning on his journey to become a badass superhero, but you must understand that if something like this were to happen in real life, would we consider it cliche? Would we think, "Nah, this guy can't be for real.. he's just another weak-turned-strong MC"? It's true that that aspect could be questionable, but the process is what most people overlook right away. Most shounen would be along the lines of, "And so MC began to work harder and harder.. *timeskip* he is now undefeatable!". But in this series' case, Izuku's becoming a hero is tedious, realistic, and grueling-- more like something that might happen in real life. At every turn, Midoriya is willing to take a new perspective into account, a new technique to sharpen his skills, a new opponent to help him become a more seasoned fighter in the world of heroes. Is that enough? It's better than just becoming zero to hero in two to three episodes.
I would also like to mention really quickly Izuku's character in general. Usually a shounen depicts its MC as someone who is a dumbass and clumsy and an idiot in everything he does-- wait for it-- except in combat. Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Kohei Horikoshi is at least willing to add in some characteristics that define Midoriya but aren't necessarily likable. For example, Izuku is constantly labeled as a fanboy. He also frequently becomes flustered and a huge mess in front of girls. Another type of shounen MC would have to be a Gary- or Mary-Sue. Can I just tell you how much I hate those types of characters are perfectly perfect in every single way imaginable? Their hair, clothing, body, everything is on fleek 24/7, they have the perfect social/love life, they have great friends, a great family, no flaws, no worries, no problems, absolutely nothing negative in their life. If there ever is someone like that in real life, be sure to introduce them to me. Then I'll punch them in the face.
Moving on, Izuku's fated encounter is totally overpowered by several other key traits of the series. With how the setting is set up, any Quirk is possible-- can we please get Marvel out of our heads? Super-speed, , telekinesis, telepathy, flight, invisibility, super-strength.. yes, way beyond the textbook powers. Let's talk "Dark Shadow", "Permeation", "All for One", "Metamorphosis".. THAT is what you call unique and innovative. Can we also go over the degree of realism that's presented with each superpower? Like "permeation", for example. That means the user can pass through anything and everything. Sounds flawlessly simple, right? Well, passing through everything also means.. passing through air. So you can't breathe. That and the fact that you won't be able to see, or smell, or hear, or feel anything. Like my example, every single Quirk has a certain amount of repercussions (well, except for Katsuki's, but then again, no one can really explain what's going on with him) for a more down-to-earth type of vulnerability. You can't really say anyone in the story is invincible.
Can we say how much popularity Boku no Hero Academia is getting versus how much it actually deserves? The artwork is breathtakingly simplistic in some ways yet admirable, while other times it's the downright definition of detailed and sophisticated. The plot is unexpected, carefully planned out, and, to be honest, has the perfect amount of angst, cliche, and beauty. Most of the main and supporting characters are versatile, dynamic, and most importantly relatable on a mental level.
With that being said, I have two minor constructive questions. How in the world did Hagakure pass the Yuuei entrance exam, let alone get into Class A? Why is it that All Might is so willing to spill out the secrets behind his appearance to a boy (Izuku) he just met? But to sum it all up, if you don't watch Boku no Hero Academia or read the manga.. what can I say? You're seriously missing out.

It feels so fresh and freeing. It's a straight to the point, no nonsense shounen and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
We get a cast of characters in the first few chapters and the rest of the story is just developing them and getting to know them and what makes them tick. The author perfectly paces the character development with the overall plot of the story so there's a good mix of action and character progress. It's been a long time since I've naturally learned the names of characters. Usually I can manage the main character and a few supporting ones. Here there's 20 in our main class and I've got their names, skills and personalities down pat by the latest chapters. It makes reading the interaction between them very fun. And that's not even counting the excellent cast of professional heroes and villains. I feel tied to the characters and I look forward to watching them grow as the story continues. There've already been some chapters where I smiled with real pride, joy and excitement, shocking me from how affected I was. That's all I can ask from a fictional story.

It's just a really fun to read this story. There's nothing terribly new here, nothing ground breaking. It's just a really, really well done shounen. If you like shounen and all the tropes it involves then you should be (and probably are) reading this. If you hate shounen then this won't make you love the genre. But if you are looking to get into shounen then I highly recommend you start here. Plus props to the author for avoiding some of the most common shounen tropes, like a MC who's a dumbass in everything but fighting or a MC that has a black hole for a stomach.


Side Rant: The author likes to do a really cliche writing trope that I absolutely hate. It's along the lines of making the characters monologue "I'll come to regret this decision in the future." or "This was the last time we had fun together like this." It's freakin' annoying, and he does this several times. To any aspiring writers- Don't do this! Don't tell your readers this kind of forced foreshadowing thing. Let them find out what happens naturally. You remove a lot of anticipation by spoiling your own story. Don't do it! Rent end.

I was really hesitant to read this at first because most shounen is kind of boring and predictable, to put it bluntly. That's why I was so surprised at how quickly I became invested in the story and the characters, and while Academia does indeed have many of the hallmark tropes of the genre it also has a lot of heart. I also love the way the powers in this series work, they're superpowers so the author can go wild making up whatever he wants. It reminds me of devil fruits from One Piece in that regard, though I do prefer the powers from this series mostly because they feel more prevalent to the story.

Pacing is one thing I really like in this comic, there's very few chapters where it feels like things are stagnating and nothing is happening. Fights usually last around 3 chapters at max, and all the time there's a real feeling of progression and escalation that keeps you on the edge of your seat as a reader.

I've heard some people complain that Izuku is a bit too much of a crybaby for them. I can understand to a degree, but that's never really bothered me for two reasons. First, I can understand his feelings. I mean this world has 80% of the population with powers, just imagine how much it must suck for the other 20%. It makes me recall the movie Gattaca, where those who are not genetically enhanced are pretty much screwed when it comes to getting jobs and such, because who would hire a non-enhanced person when you could hire someone made better? So with Izuku I can already imagine that he's devastated but knowing that it's also his dream to become a hero really made me sympathize with him early on. Heck the flashback stuff with Izuku's mom made ME cry a little. The second reason his crying never bothered me is because you have to have a foundation to build a character on. If he was strong and brave from the start then we'd have a lot less reason to care when he IS strong and brave, basically. I actually enjoy reading about a character like Izuku more than a character like say, Luffy from One Piece for example. Luffy is a great character but I don't really think he's all that realistic, and while realism is by no means a requirement in a fantasticical battle manga it does help.

There are some minor problems I have with the series, but mostly it's just nipicks. For one, I think that the "Class A" group could have been shaved down from 20 characters to 15 or even 10. Sure I do like them all and as the story goes along you do feel a real sense of comeradere amongst the class but some of the heroes are pretty much just background characters. Heck they could have just made Class A smaller and then folded some of those hero ideas into Class B, since some of them are kind of underutilized anyhow. Take the invisible girl for example, she's literally never done anything significant in the story yet in 120+ chapters. Does every character nessicarily need something to do in the plot? No, of course not. I just think that a smaller cast would have led to fleshing some people out more though it is cool seeing how the author comes up with so many powers.

Is this the greatest manga ever made? No, heck it's not even my favorite shounen (which is Fullmetal Alchemist btw). If you hate shounen, will it change your mind about the genre? Probably not. But I watched the anime for this series and it inspired me to catch up on the manga in a single day. It's fun, action-packed and pretty emotional. If you think you might like it give the series a shot, you might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

TBH I wasn't expecting much, it had a HXH feel going on. I orginally watched the anime, then read the manga after. But for this manga, it's fast paced, it's in your face at all times you have no time to breath you are right on the edge of your seat from the get go I like the character design, it's original, the character's are easily loveable, personality quirks and all. It's a great read and i'm happy that it's being made into an english release. It's one of those manga's you can re-read over and over without a thought!

I have seen the statement of some people comparing it with other shonen like Naruto. I admit it is similar to a few manga for example One Piece in having diverse characters, well planned story and group dynamics. It might be called similar to Naruto in having thorough portrayal of fights and the visible use of cleverness and tactics but it does miles better than Naruto. Artwork is appealing especially when it comes to action and the group of characters is refreshing. Their development is well integrated in the story that it doesn't seem like a deliberate effort from the author and it is always emotive and make us identify with them. I haven't seen any character that comes in the limelight redundantly. They all have their part essential for the manga. Even the villains are interesting and tend to develop in time. Another thing is the characters themselves, their concept is refreshing. You don't feel like they have been copy pasted from other manga. Every friendship, rivalry, animosity naturally evolves without making us feel like they are forced. Likewise, the wisecracks, humorous conversations are naturally there as having such characters together.

All in all, in terms of characters, group dynamics, character development this manga is great.

Shueisha recently found out that superhero adaptations are a money-printing press. The mega IPs One-Punchline Man´s remake and this turned into are the results. I have no strong opinions on either but both follow the popular DBZ formula fine and will delight casual anime/manga fans while making much-needed money for all involved. The plot never fully works and descends into unending city destructions against no-dimensional cartoon villains later on. The characters, worst of all, fail to evolve, and all female characters suck so I have to wonder about the manga´s reader retention rate and possible legacy. The lengthy prequel manga goes nowhere btw so even the superhero spin-off curse goes into full effect here. The art is memorable enough but the fights are very muddy and hard to follow and the characters can be overdesigned.
Avengers: The Initiative / Academy told this exact story much better and this is a lesser take on Naruto on top of that as that too was a superhero comic. I recommend reading US comics to get the best out of the genre.
