"It's Like Genshiken, But..."

Okay, not really, with the notable exception that it takes place in college. Given the ubiquity of high school as a setting in manga, we're already in a somewhat unfamiliar place (or, on a forest path which may or may not lead to sweets).

I wanted to love this manga. But as it went on, I had to admit to myself that I merely liked it a lot. The culprit, as usual, is pacing/development. There isn't much of either, especially after volume 7 or 8 (despite the efforts of someone involved in the creation of the manga).

Also,

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I wanted to mention the characters a little bit, because their static relationships (for the most part) are simultaneously a highlight and a detriment to the pacing/development as mentioned above. I really have no problem with the main four, other than that Kitahara especially, but also Yoshizawa would obviously be in a "serious relationship" with someone or possibly a couple different guys through the manga's run. For them to be single the entire way through is just silly and unrealistic (not that manga excels in the realism department, but this one in particular seems to be quite a bit more realistic than the average).

Then we have the "new" characters (those introduced after the main four have solidified as a group): Kaminuma, Itsuki, and Tachikawa. Put simply, none of them add anything to the manga. Kaminuma is barely around, and her "relationship" with Itou remains unexplored. Itsuki adds a bit of a "wild card" to the mix with her disregard for personal space, but is mostly relegated to gags and doesn't receive serious examination. And Tachikawa is just shoehorned into the manga fairly late in the run to act as ...sexual harassment for Nishida? Her inclusion doesn't make any sense and adds nothing, as mentioned.

And of course, I couldn't comment on this manga without mentioning the Yoshizawa/Nishida "relationship". There's obvious interest (possibly mutual?) but the mangaka never pulled the trigger. It's definitely not from lack of opportunity; I guess the mangaka just felt that escalating their relationship wasn't in the work's best interest. I think it's the biggest missed opportunity of the manga and one of the main things keeping it at the merely very good level rather than the transcendent work it could easily have been.

Still, it's worth a read. And yes, the female characters are drawn quite well.

Being largely based on situational comedy the ability to take a given scenario seriously is where potential laughs go to live or die. In here situations range from pretty great resulting in some genuine belly laughs, to less than porno level, which results in more of a sense of disappointment.
Its just about fully SoL with some sense of an ongoing timeline but its not a manga with much in the way of progression.
The art is good and the softcore scenes are rendered very well for what they are.
Characters are good. Some are more entertaining that others, but none are offensive to follow.
As far as relatability goes (a selling point of this) it can range from very good to leading to a feeling of disconnect between the author's apparently quite strange life experiences and the lives of any other normal human.

Not much to chew on here, but if you're taking a bus ride or something of the sort this is a good time killer.

a very funny, kinda perverted, down-to-earth title

I love this series and series like it. It's kind of like a lewdified Genshiken minus otaku culture; just somewhat unsociable college students doing their thing and lots of jokes that could come straight from reality. I wrote a review for the series praising it in length. The manga is so, so funny. I need more of it. Also, Shimimaru draws really nice bodies.
