Great writing

Brilliant!

Its no wonder this novel spawned a new genre in China. It's fantastic.

Rather than comparisons with Gantz, which was filled with plotholes and stupid characters, the amount of mind games, politics and teambuilding makes me think instead of the reality show 'Survivor' on CBS. You know outthink, outwit, outplay? These guys have it to a T. Unlike in Gantz, there are also no stupid characters. If there are, they die very quickly. Some of the plans these guys come up with, are frankly ingenious. The way they can think outside the box to change their environment to gain an advantage, multiple contingencies to deal with variables, always planning ahead for attack and retreat. Shit. If I didn't know any better, I would think the author was in millitary intelligence or went to some kind of war college.

Clever characters, interesting setting - I especially liked how the author managed to connect werewolfs, vampires, xianxia and other 'legends' into a plausible scientific theory.

Great fleshed out background stories and dynamic writing makes this awesome to read.

Good stuff but easy to initially dismiss

Rather than summarizing the story here are my ideas on what makes this story good, but seem to put off others who only read the first few chapters.

At the beginning the setup feels very similar to Gantz which I didnt like because Gantz had an extreme atmosphere of helplessness to me. The transported to world is deadly and people either adapt fast enough or die. Terror Infinity transcended the Gantz atmosphere, because the characters fleshed out are usually the capable ones that can survive. They gradually learn about why they are in the world of horror films, which reveals some good world building.

The other big hurdle to enjoying Terror Infinity is the main character doesnt instantly adapt to the world of horror films that he is transported to. Rather he initially clings to his civilized ideals and ethics. Only after seeing stark evidence of his inability to protect and rely on others in life and death situations does he start to grow and become more practical. Think watching the growth of the main characters ethics is a big charm point of this story, but if you only read the first arc it is easy to be frustrated and not realize what this webnovel has to offer.

The part that everyone is bound to like are the cool upgrades for completing missions. Imagine getting a wuxia kung-fu upgrade, and then using that kung-fu to fight a T-Rex.

I want to punch the MC so bad...
Rating: 1.0 / 10.0

Have you ever watch a movie where a group of people stuck somewhere and there's that one guy who act like he's some kind of hero but don't want to get his hands dirty. But, when someone else do the dirty work he start pointing fingers and screaming "morality" or "justice" even though that someone just saved his sorry arse.

You just want to kill that guy don't you? But in this novel that guy is the Main Character! And worst he's got followers. Even worst he's blessed with divine luck by the author. Everything always go his way even though he never lift a finger for it. He should've died but somehow he's alive and got a power up. Why? Because the author wants to.

Marty Stu times infinity.

He'll always be on top because he's the main character but not because he's a well written character that actually worked for it.

There's a few interesting characters in this novel that should've been the MC but the author either made them to be a bad guy or just kill them off. This novel is the worst I've read and I've read some really bad stuff.

A good mix of ideas but...
Rating: 6.0 / 10.0

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Note: Just saying, the novel's ideas are based off "horror" films, not terror films. And horror film -> 恐怖片, where 恐怖 is the same from 無限恐怖.

It's a good mix of old ideas as well as some new ones.

Transported to another world is often used.
Transported to an alternate space and time to play ruthless games was also used quite a few times before. A pretty familiar one would be Gantz but, of course, it's not the same.
Using existing horror films as setting is pretty brilliant, similar to another Chinese novel that uses games as settings.

At the end of the day, the ideas are awesome. To name a few movies, there are Resident Evil, Aliens, The Mummy, Final Destination, Ju-On: The Curse (Japanese), Jurassic Park, and etc which I haven't read yet. So settings, I would totally give a 10/10.

But as for the male protagonist, I don't like him as much. I guess I don't like character development as I feel that it's changing the male protagonist quite a bit. He's straying away from who he is or was. Rather than blaming the male protagonist, it's more like I dislike the author's way of development. So, going from a pure nice guy, which is the real him, to one who sees the darkness in others and only care for a few's survival is not a bad development. But to the point of using, or working with, your enemy is just low.

To top it off, I really dislike it when the male protagonist gets a lot of help other the female leads. For instance, 7000 points are a lot of points and with a B scenario, that's a lot. The female lead could instantly become Spider-Man with points left over, for instance. And at that point, the female lead probably only spent about 10,000 or so points on herself, maybe less. But she just tossed all that to the male protagonist and gave him a second life amulet (cross). I mean, the male protagonist got his life saved by a girl who is pretty darn weak. She's an intelligence type of character, ffs. She's literally like glass and easily shattered. Speaking of which, she died soon after too. Sorry, but the male protagonist was just too pathetic for me to continue reading.

Lastly, this is VERY common with web novels and Chinese novels. However they start the novel with some "goal", somehow that goal just gets forgotten. 50,000 points = freedom. More than one instance, male protagonist got like 5000-10000 points. The system supposedly give them near death, or most likely death, situations but usually not 100% death situations. So, he really don't need to blow all his points every single time. Try saving up and get his ass out of the stupid games. Even if he wants to help save his team members, save up!!! But they don't, they just aim to get stronger and seriously, f around.

I can bet you that eventually, the plot will steer towards achieving god-hood, or becoming a god or some sort. It the same freaking thing for many many many Chinese novels. It gets super lame and old really quick if you read a few other novels. They lose their original goal, in this case it's going home with his lover and live happily ever after, and trade it in for an "adventurous power hungry road to become a god" or something.

High Tension
Rating: N/A
by Tellestarle
August 3rd, 2015, 10:56pm
This is good. I am actually pretty impressed with this one. There is alot of tension in this story which authors rarely execute properly. The characters are diverse with real personalities and the names are really broad and easy to remember sometimes totally ignoring names and limiting it to body type or something like "that middle aged fatty" just so that you don't have to split your brain trying to remember who's who. Pretty effective. Though there isn't alot to know about the characters' pasts other than, them wanting to escape the hardships of life in general whether the reason was foolish or nah. They hated their lives at one point or another. End of story. Since death comes to every character save for the MC and his ever growing band of merrymen sooner or later, it's ok that we know nothing about them. Some stories which are told pull at your feels more than others, but it's during their stuggles through life and death do you fall in love or totally wish a bus would run them over or get eaten by a zombie. Human frailty as well as their will to live is experienced every chaper (which usually makes or breaks them) And the comedy is pretty good too. Not forced in and random jokes liven up the mood before again swiftly getting super dark again. In addition, you get an inexplicable urge to re watch or watch for the first time most modern horrors or the ones featured during the volumes to supplement the reading experience. I finally gathered the nerve to watch The Grudge since Im not good with supernatural horrors and nearly punched myself. I was terrified for the characters while I myself read with the lights on. I totally get why they felt the way I did. The beauty of this story is, if you watched the movies then you probably would find yourself immersed even more in Zheng's and others state of mind, especially when it involves things you cannot understand scientifically ( even if the "science" is utter bullshit ) and you may end up cheering out loud when a character overcomes the evergrowing odds or cursing at your electronic device as if it can do anything to help them. I haven't found any glaring drawbacks of this series as yet so until I read more im just saying what I like for now, it's not perfect but I can guarantee it's hella interesting.

If I had to summarize the plot in one sentence it would be: Wuxia and Gantz had a baby, enjoy. I don't want to give any more of the plot away, but know this if you aren't reading this, you should drop whatever you're doing and get on it. Also I recommend getting through at least the 1st volume, it really picks up from there.
@Sircus There isn't any kind of definition for copyright in China, they won't be cutting anything from the story, unless it gets published elsewhere.

This is actually quite a brilliant story. Though due to the story using copyrighted elements in the story I wonder if they will cut some things in other adaptions. Action+Spooky+Mystery is abit better tags imo. Thx for translating this one.

My only problem is that the writer struggles abit with caputuring the spooky/creepy feelings from the Movie universes he borrows. In arc 1 he captured the mood perfectly. In arc 2 the aliens felt like hungry bears. Not exactly the feeling I got from watching the Movie or what made Alien so scarry.
