Description
Sakaguchi Ryou has a dark secret: he's a "fudanshi" -- a straight guy obsessed with BL. While he has trouble understanding why other guys don't find the same bliss he does in this unusual hobby, he'll be the first to admit how awkward and embarrassing it is to buy manga from the girls' section of the bookshop, or explain the world of boys' love, shipping wars and doujinshi circles to his "normal" best friend Nakamura.

Will Ryou find other fans to share his hobby with, or is he forever doomed to sit alone on his throne of BL romance?

Yo. Let me Tell Y'all How I Met Your Mother.

So your mother's name is "Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu" and she's perfect.

This is completely my own opinion, though. I am a huge sucker for comedy and this one is right up my alley. I've read Oresama Teacher, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Nichijou and I've been dying to read more manga with similar themes. Despite their similarity of being within the realm of slice of life and comedy with very little focus on actual romance, Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu revolves around a specific topic and that is the world of BL! I am a BL reader myself and I always end up ROFL-ing so much my back actually hurts. There are so many relatable moments and I always pause and tell myself, "YES. I FEEL YOU." This here, is pure gold if your interests fall within the spectrum. Otherwise, you'll find that there is no actual plot to hold on to and might find the read not worth your while. But then again, that's the point of slice of life. I can see how this manga would not have much material to go forward with and end up hanging by a cliff. Still, doesn't mean I won't enjoy the ride while it lasts. Bcs not only is the mangaka does a good job in conveying relatable snippets of life as fudanshi and fujoshi, but the ART! My God! I'd believe it if they've got a collection of BL works done before! (AND I'D READ!)

Currently this series is still undergoing and I'm waiting for translations! Can't wait for more smile

It makes me laugh and I can relate to when I was a teenager, that's what this story is supposed to do and it pulls it off. It's simple and I like it like that. Michinoku has some pretty good BL works out there so I find it refreshing to see this light side of her. And tbh it's interesting to see a fudanshi story without the fudanshi being (or en end up being) romantically interested in guys.

It Has Its Good Points ... Somewhat.

Where do I start?
As my title states, this manga has its good points; there are parts in the comic where I actually found myself laughing aloud (such as the protagonist trying to buy BL manga in public). Unfortunately, I can't use another word to describe this series other than "forced." It feels a bit like it's trying to become the new "Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun" in the world of fresh, 4-koma comedies and that'd be great ... if the humor didn't feel so dry and dull most of the time.

Obviously, there isn't much of a story. It's intended to be a comedy series, after all. In this series, we follow Ryo, a fudanshi who claims to be straight despite his bisexual tendencies (as his friend words it). The concept in of itself is very original.

As for the art, I have a few gripes. First of all, the art in general is lovely; it's quite detailed.
Second of all, the designs aren't as good as the art itself. Just to show an example, there's a childhood friend of a side character who shares a very similar hairstyle to the transgender character of this story. When these two characters are shown in a profile view, it can be hard to tell them apart and that's a bit ... annoying? Bothersome? Regardless, one of them could have at least had screentone added to show some kind of obvious difference between the two.

Moving past the general art and design, when it comes to making a 4-koma series, I personally believe simpler art styles work best in such small boxes (can I really call them "panels"?). When reading this manga, I've found that everything felt crammed together in tiny boxes. For Michinoku's style, the comedy would have most likely flowed more smoothly if she went with having multiple panels rather than taking on a 4-koma style. Rather than seeing expressive characters, most of the illustrations often show tense, flat expressions because there are so few panels for the artist to work with.

I dove right into this manga, expecting it to be hilarious from start-to-finish. So far, it's felt like a rollercoaster that moves at a sluggish speed and doesn't have any loops. A lot would expect it to speed up and become worth the efforts but so far, it's not doing much for me.

It's got an anime adaptation planned ... so hopefully, that'll be better than the story in comic form. I can only hope so. I quite Ryo's best friend, so I wouldn't mind giving the future adaptation a shot to see his scenes at least.

I was hoping I'd enjoy this, but after reading all the available chapters I feel like this is a manga about... nothing in particular. The protagonist is indeed into BL and meets other fans of BL, but there is no real sense of a plot or character development or anything else that makes for a cohesive story. The side characters are not fleshed out at all, and they just kind of pop up and pop back out of the story at random. It gets two points for the art and one point for having a fudanshi protagonist rather than a fujoshi; I've never seen that done before.
