Tsubaki is a girl who loves making her younger sister's hair pretty every morning, but she doesn't think that kind of style suits herself! The day of her High School Beginning Ceremony, after she failed in being the top student (who usually makes the ceremony speech), she finds herself sitting next to the actual top student of the first years, the worst rude guy ever, Kyouta. She ends up cutting his hair on purpose because of the bad things he says to her. Kyouta demands that Tsubaki pay him back with her body, but Tsubaki fixes his hair instead--making it even shorter! After that, Kyouta unexpectedly kisses Tsubaki and swears that he'll make her his woman.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I'm a huge smut fan (go ahead, sue me), but the thing is, I only read smut because it's a guilty pleasure. The characters and storyline? Don't care. But Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu is a series that has conquered me completely in a way more than just reading it for the smut as originally planned.

In most smut series, the girl is a defenseless idiot, and it leaves you thinking most of the time just what the hell the males see in her. It's always the same rinse-and-repeat plot of "haha, I'm an evil douchebag, I shall take your virginity away" and the girls, being idiots, always think the same of "ohhh no, please don't touch me!" but over time, they fall for the guy and think "ohhh, I don't care if he doesn't love me, he can go ahead and fuck me all he wants".

In Kyou Koi, the male is still the douchebag who wants to screw the girl just for the sake of screwing her. And Tsubaki, of course, stands by the whole "ohhhh no, dont touch" that follows, as mentioned above.

HOWEVER, the difference between this is I actually felt something for Tsubaki. Even after she fell for the guy (typical shoujo), she stood by her decisions and morals of say, not letting Kyouta touch or kiss her if he didn't mean it. Basically, she didn't want to be toyed around with.

Even if she is pathetic when compared to any other girl in the universe, in shoujo, the girl standing by her previous morals and crap even after falling in love is HUGE. Normally it's "oh shit, I fell in love. k lets forget about everything else, my morals go out the window". I liked that Tsubaki didn't suddenly decide to become Kyouta's plaything just because she fell in love. During their first date, she gets pissed that Kyouta is in it for the sex, and when he's about to put the moves on, she gets pissed at him and ditches him, dissing him on being just a womanizer ("Is this how you treat all girls?" or something like that).

Then when she's at school, and she walks in on Kyouta and that other girl, and then Kyouta wants to touch her and shit, she gets pissed and says "Don't touch me if you don't mean it." That seriously formed a knot in my stomach of pity and sadness for Tsubaki, and I was shocked that I could actually feel for her. Tsubaki, a shoujo character!

I liked that she stood by her morals, no matter what. And when the whole sex situation comes up, she still goes by her morals of wanting to walk down the virgin aisle. Of course, as most teenagers, she gets pressured into having sex. She almost gives in, but is terrified of it (so at least she doesn't think "Oh god, I'll give him my virginity because I love him so much and I want him"), and I honestly don't think she would have gone through with it either way.

Then they don't end up smeckzing, cause Kyouta turns out to be not such a huge prick and actually takes her feelings into consideration then, and promises her not to rush her into anything (A shoujo male saying that. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!). I was so shocked. For once, a male lead takes the girl's morals and feelings into consideration! For once, he doesn't say "fuck it" and screws her anyway! Wow!

I know that this isn't much to go by, and it isn't that impressive overall, but if you compare it to other Minami Kanan series or most shoujos out there, Kyouta and Tsubaki are pretty much amazing.

Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu stands by it's shoujo roots, yet unlike most shoujos, there's actual character development (especially in Kyouta) and the plot itself doesn't revolve around sex, sex, and sex. In fact, there's no sex at all!

It's quite shocking, really. But I enjoy this series. It's a nice change from those asshole-playboys-target-defenseless-females manga out there.

I'm surprised to say I'm not as disappointed with this series as I thought I would be when I first started reading it. Now this, along with Hapi Mari, are the only series I'm following very closely. I've given up on reading manga for the most part. : P

Good job, Minami Kanan. You finally learned to write not such shit series.

EDIT: I feel I gotta add this, after re-reading the first 3 volumes of the series (volume 2's quality just is... *shudder*). I think I understand the reason why my heart breaks for Tsubaki near the beginning. I can relate to her. Can't all the girls here? I know how it is having an unrequited love, particularly one that's not serious about relationships. & I know a lot girls think "a fling is better than nothing", but take it from me, that fling will just cause more pain & emotional attachment, so it is not something you want.

It's... it's so sad. ;__;

It's not the cliches, I'm used to those. It's not the art, it's perfectly fine, not good but alright. It's not that it's smut either (which is a mild turn-off but I knew what I was reading when I started). Really, it's the characters, how they interact and how they're portrayed. Ugh!
After reading halfway through this series, I have come to the conclusion that I despise Tsubaki in every way. She's weak, appears to have almost no common sense, can't understand thing about anyone around her and she never realizes when she's done something incredibly stupid.
Kyouta is an idiot too. He's your typical shoujo male MC (Good looking, smart, loved by women, etc, etc) but that's not the problem I have with him. My problem started when he technically assaulted Tsubaki (who hardly bothered to fight back, really, how many girls wouldn't kick a guy for practically molesting them?) and it only grew from there. The author tries to make his decisions seem heroic and well planned when the reader wants to strangle him and go "Why the f*** did you do that?! That didn't even make sense!"
And don't even get me started on some of the side characters this author has thought up. They're only there to create epic drama that leaves the same taste in your mouth as sour milk. It's all, "Oh, he's paying attention to another girl now I'm going to cry because I am now useless." Ugh -.-
I stayed with this series as long as I could but I simply can no longer read it. It's an average shoujo of this type if I'm being generous. Dull story, dull (and annoying) characters, the art's plain (I don't why people are saying it's so good,) and it's too long for its own good.

And there is my opinion. smile

With this being a Minami Kanan work, I didn't have high expectations when I first started reading. Her heroines tend to be incredibly weak and useless. Lack of communication is a major factor for all the drama that happens in the manga and it is boring since it gets repetitious. Tsubaki seriously needs to grow a backbone because her constant insecurity in her relationship with Kyouta and lack of confidence in herself is painful to sit through. It is tiring and predictable when girl after girl pops up to cause misunderstandings in the relationship when it can all be resolved with a simple conversation. Also, why doesn't Tsubaki call Kyouta by his first name? After everything that happened you'd think she would...

Please, jealousy is NOT love -__-

WARNING: I kinda started ranting.... bigrazz

I hate how many people seem to like this on other websites I visited. The manga is not only repetitive, melodramatic, and misleading, but also cliche.

Many who like the manga all seemed to ignore the repeatedly used scenes of the girl, Tsubaki, getting overly sensitive/jealous of those who get near her boyfriend.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There's a girl who smiles at him? OH NO I better make a huge fuss out of it. I will cry and shout and scream my head off because obviously my loving boyfriend doesn't love me anymore. The dude want s to think about his own future instead of having a date with me? I'm trashing the cakes I made for him. Oh, and better yet, I'm definitely not telling him just how hurt I am. I'm not explaining a freaking thing to try to keep our relationship smooth sailing.

The main character is down right ridiculous to the point I want to slap her across the face with a flyswatter and feed her head to the sharks. Honestly, she is giving female readers my age the wrong message. She is making it seem like her ways of interacting with her boyfriend is totally normal, and is even a sign of true love.

That is utterly nonsensical. I can't believe I wasted so much time just to watch this girl throw tantrums...

Real love does NOT have to be so painful and filled with suffering. A healthy relationship doesn't need the constant fights and doubts about one another. It isn't filled to the brim with burning jealousy all the time, and if someone is in such a situation, then I don't think the relationship is the right one for the person. Seriously. Tsubaki's reactions to things that happen to her can, at best, be described as childish. Even Twilight is better than this, kind of.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Tsubaki is willing to throw away her own future for some high school dude she cut the hair off of.... WHERE DOES HER BURNING LOVE EVEN COME FROM? Yet, when her bf is spotted talking to another girl with a gentle expression, Tsubaki is 120% sure they're going to break up... How does that even make sense?!
She is totally consumed by her romance, and forgets about every other aspect of her life. What about her future? Friends? Family?

Her love is just inspired by the fact that a popular guy made her more popular, when in reality she could've achieved the same without his help. After this, scenes roll and suddenly they are madly in love. Just what in the world?

I don't mind the fact that this is just the story of an insecure girl with popular boyfriend; but this series crafts each chapter in such a way that it is implied that her relationships are totally healthy. And that, my friends, means that there are real girls reading this manga who may end up believing that they, too, have to go through all this just to find "the one".....

LOL If that is what true love is supposed to be, then to hell with it.

This is like another one of your shoujo manga, but i liked the drawing quite a bit. I find this type of manga drawing soo cute hehe...
I agreed with the comment made by a previous reviewer, although the plot is another one of those many others typical hero-heroine lovey dovey, but the added touch of the author does change everything.

Who should(or rather would WANT to) read?

Beginners! Actually not really. I just think that beginners are the only people that could tolerate the characters. I read this when I first started getting into manga in general. This is the first smut I read. I really wanted to slap the main characters at first but they get "better" as in not as horrible as before. At least the boy did. The girl becomes a little less of a doormat but still invites people to walk all over her. I also recommend it to old veteran shoujo readers that have seen so much crap they are immune to it. You'll have a hoot! There's actual comedy in here if you can look past the idiotic characters. Drama addicts will love it too.

Who shouldn't read -
If you want a strong female lead - don't read. If you don't mind a weak female lead(not every girl has to kick butt or be super confident) as long she's not an IDIOT- don't read. If you don't mind a weak female lead as long as the male lead is good...the guy is an asshole. He's a poster boy for women who think "If I stay with the abuser maybe he'll change." He does "change"...kinda, but I feel sorry for the poor girls that don't remember that it's fiction. So yeah, no feminist either. If you don't care about the characters as long as there's a satisfying romance...Have you been paying attention? What kind of relationship can a doormat and a arrogant asshole have? They NEVER communicate their feelings. That's not a good relationship- don't read! Other than that, drama, drama, drama(more drama than any relationship has the right to have but that's just shoujo).

Final word-
If you can look past its many flaws it's an okay manga. Not horrible(I finished it after-all...) not good either(I wont re-read it...ever). If you read it and think that it's the most romantic story you've ever read, it's soooo amazing...It might be time to branch out. I started reading this when I was 14 and I knew it was crap...

I'm seriously annoyed. I've seen this manga out there every since I started getting into shoujo, which was quite a ways ago. Anyway, this has probably been one of the more annoying shoujos I have ever encountered. Like, seriously? After the male lead craps on her, she still chooses to love him more? Wow. She takes much pride in herself and her body.

As much people are saying about opinions, I will include that I have finished it and I've always learned to finish what I started - plus I wanted to write a review, so, eh.

The manga isn't BAD, it's just the characters are very... displeasing and in the beginning degrading.

I literally loved the manga at first... but... omg! Last few volumes were just making me mad! But the last few chapters made me especially annoyed! I stopped to like it because of Tsubaki... she should be smart, but no, she is just so stupid ---> hate the: jealousy, can't express myself, dumb, clueless, looking to much into things type!!! I will read it till the end since I've already seen 12v... but sad it's just sad. My rating dropped from 8 to 5...
