A fun read, an admirable main character, hilarious and beast mode demon king roleplay

I have a longer review on novel updates, so I'll just make this one shorter as a counterbalance to these other ones here.

What you should expect from this: OP mc (some great action scenes) who is a good guy, hilarious with his Demon King roleplay to counter his social anxiety (he can be a little on the frustrating side at times), a harem that sees through him because of everything he does for them and loves him for it (and just stays a bit at the ecchi level, though there's a few points that it gets intense), and some occasional obvious plot developments that makes you wonder at the characters. It's just an entertaining and fun, light read with a shounen feel to it.

What you shouldn't expect: Extremely edgy, evil, or ruthless mc, really deep plot with lots of twists, character death, evil to win.

Go into it knowing what to expect. If you like the sort of stuff I mentioned then you'll like this, if you only like deep plot or edgy protagonists then you won't like this. Simple as that.

If after you've read this and are possibly intrigued, give the first novel a try. It's translated up through 7, currently, and still holds true to how it was at first. Contrary to certain opinions, because of the ecchi elements (and a few darker moments) this definitely isn't for kids, and you certainly don't have to be younger than a certain age to enjoy it biggrin It all just depends on your tastes.

If the title "Slave" turn you off, don't be

Comment about Jandalman's personal comment and opinion:
Old: this is about volume 1 of the novel
Edited: this is about volume 2 of the novel.
END comment about that comment.

Note: Generally Chinese and Japanese novel will include their culture value in their writing, so of course Chinese novel will not mind using some violent to solve certain issue while Japanese novel will try a more peaceful way to solve most issue; unless the theme of the novel is dark to begin with.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometime a title can turn you on or off before you even read it because base on the image on the cover and the title a reader can assume and expect certain thing if the title is too openly stated. For me the title "slave" doesn't really give me much hope but lucky I read the scanlation manga chapters that made me want to read the novel. So if you like me and get turn off by the title "slave", don't be. For those who hoping for dark fantasy or more adult themes, well good luck trying find it here. Now I can compare this level of Ecchi-ness to the novel "High School DXD". For those who like to read good old idiots yet friendly theme with ecchi and harem genre that not stupidly writing, meaning there a reason for everything then this is for you.

Childrens Novel

This is all my personal opinion...

I read it because I liked the start and then a turn for the worse. When I read this novel I actually skip the bits that are so bad it will embarrass you just by reading it. When skipping I already know what happens, he didn't kill them and acts almighty. The Japanese love to make a novel that the main character a complete pacifist.

Threatened to be killed and he just lets it slide and lets them live because he's scared of killing people? The ones close to him are threatened to be raped and killed but will let them live because he doesn't want to kill? He knows killing is necessary in this world but doesn’t want to? Loves to act like a demon king but then doesn't kill anyone just proves he's stronger than them? Will even keep serial killers alive being he doesn't like killing? “I defeated you stop your ways” is what I get from the fight scenes. How ridiculous.... The ones he lets live actually come back later and just cause a giant problem for him and the girls later on.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
One was close to being raped and the other was tortured. Almost to the level where he could care less what happens to them.
The girls are actually more of a man than him. They actually are fine with killing if they know it’s necessary if they want to live.

I get why the translator for this series has so long for updates. I know Japanese and can read it but can’t read it at a fast speed so I wouldn’t waste my time trying to slowly read this series. I give big props to the translator for this series. Here is my greatest advice for this series...If you are older than 5 yrs old I doubt you’ll like this series.

Good start so far. EDIT: nope, f*ck this shit.

EDIT: Holy shit this series turned crap fast. MC is so immensely stupid, pacifistic and just so...JAPANESE in his social retardedness that he can't get a hint that one of the girls was so bleeding obviously under mind control by her incestuous brother. When he finally gets the memo smashed over his head with a brick repeatedly he still moves slowly to save her and refuses to kill any of the goons in his way. If only this was a Chinese novel, the hero would have killed that idiot brother the first time he showed his smug face instead of waiting for him to mind rape his sister. F*cking dimwit. Oh turns out you were used by the douchebag human general and he nearly sealed you away, kidnap the girl you just belatedly save from her brother and probably kill your other companions? Beat him up but don't kill him. Act all chunii instead. Piece. Of. Shit.

I regret ever reading this donkey anus of a novel.

OLD thus irrelevant initial review: First volume was good enough to keep my interest up the whole time, however it is still a pretty generic story overall. At least the single vol I read had a satisfying ending with a sequel hook rather than some bs cliffhanger. I will be putting this series on hold however, to wait for the translator to finish vol 2. Apparently the TL group releases sporadic batches of PARTS of chapters monthly so tis going to be a looooong wait. But hey, they doing it for free (bless) so I'll just look for other things to read.
