It is good.

For a story that is over 900 chapters, to remain readable and tolerable is a good sign. I have read a lot Xianxias and by far this one is among the greats.

The story starts out slow, and there is a lot new words to remember for the story building. At first, you might feel pressure from what one reviewer has named to much pinyin, but honestly, this is not the case. The author, Fang Xiang, is literally building a world with its own system, and therefore, many objects will have their own names, different from what we know them for.

In any case, I am giving this story such a good rating, because it has still been engaging after so many chapters. The characters grow, and the female charaters aren't terrible. I enjoy stories where not all female characters flock towards the main character, and where I can see dynamic women, as well as men. He does a okay job at that. During not any of the arcs did I feel like the author lost all sense of direction and plot.

If I had to recommend any Xianxia that came out in the last ten years or so, this is the one I would recommend.

Readable and tolerable

I haven't read too many straight-laced (non-comedic) xianxia stories out there, but this one was listed as a good one with a protagonist who isn't a sociopathic monster, and it delivers.

Basically, I imagine normal xianxia must be a genre that is basically one half shounen battle-manga power-ups and one half murderhobos from a lazy D&D campaign.

Our protagonist is pragmatic, but not (completely) amoral, with not too much 'face' but a lot of luck and talent for weird things. Starting out as a low-level disciple at a sect of cultivators who practice sword magic, we follow him as he ends up leveling up , looting treasures and corpses and delving deep into the mysteries of the past.

I don't know if it is atypical, but the world is made out of various mini-worlds connected to each other through a kind of network of magical or cosmic rivers in some sort of primordial sea, with travel between them completely routine. There is no mention of the Heavens or gods or the Tao, though all the trappings are straight xiunxia. When people level-up into ningmai or jindan or whatever, they don't ascend to higher worlds of existence, they just become stronger. The setting is basically a less mystical version of what I think of the typical xianxia setting.

My biggest peeve is the ridiculous speed and development of powers and level-ups, which is not helped by the lack of sense of time. But, very happily, our protagonist is not at all omnicompetent, but more of a jack of all trades, who happens to stumble upon A LOT of different things that help him along the way into some very weird places.

In summary:

* Likeable characters, not too evil
* Lots and lots and lots and lots of powers, power ups, spells, loot, whatever you fancy, most of which are forgotten within a hundred chapters
* So many coincidences that it will break you suspension of disbelief with such a loud bang that you kind of go through to the other side and stop caring. Your mantra is: "Oh, these people are ta'veren."
* Super-long, of course, but readable and the translation, though it has a few snags every chapter and lots of unfamiliar terms up the wazoo, grows on you. Not polished, but it doesn't want to make me tear my eyebrows out

Among the best Xianxias novels
by Katsono

Xiuzhen Shijie is an unusual tale of a man without a care at all about power and only wishing to be rich as a poor sect farmer, seeking a life of comfort. But how could a Xianxia novel be about a man without any fighting kills and no desire to acquire them ? That's what makes it great.

What I would like to call the prologue part, which is about two hundred chapters, is extremely slow without anything major happening and only the transition of our protagonist being a farmer to a full fledged combatant. It's actually misleading as to how the novel really turns out to be, but nonetheless a good introduction to the life of our poor farmer and how he climbs the stairs to become a cultivator. Many events still happen although mostly unimportant and the story is a mix of comedy and cultivation. That part is different from most stories as there's only a few fights with more focus on other things such as farming and trading, but even with only these two hundred chapters I consider this among the best xianxias I've read for its protagonist is unique. Zuo Mo is by far the best main character of any xianxia novel, with as strong a personality as you can get, and a confused mix of ruthlessness and empathy in a mere weak human. Atypically of his age, he acts on a whim and is egoistical, but as the story progresses he evolves into a better human, a smart leader and a strong willed warrior.

However, what makes this novel ranks even higher is when the story really picks up. At first, I wondered how the author would ever manage to solve all the plot's mysteries in only nine hundred chapters, but the pace suddenly changes and the novel takes a different turn. This is where the author really shows its talent. Unlike previously, the secondary characters start having real impact and are getting even more exposition than the protagonist himself. The latter also changes, focusing more on war and battles than making money and the novel isn't about a lone cultivator but a group of people fighting for their lives.

The battles and operations of Zuo Mo and his companions are really interesting and great, often being extremely low and slow paced but not boring at all and way more well thought than any other novels. Instead of focusing on individuals fights, most combats are solved through tactics just like the main character's solo battles at the beginning, but now with more characters, each of them being interesting in their own ways.

So far, this novel is the most enjoyable and satisfying I've ever read. Following the adventures of Zuo Mo's and his fellows has been a long trip I wouldn't forget and I would only wish to read more. Sadly, the novel is only nine hundred chapters long and we're already halfway through. As much as I would like it to be a longer travel even if it were meaningless, the author seems to not want to drag it at all unlike his fellows writers, and also unexpectedly contrary to his slow paced writing.

A time pass that burged into my favourite list all the way to top. hilarious mc, engaging plot, realistic and unique battles and realistic people's behaviors. in this story mc does not encounter/engage arrogant young master of big clan/sect every other chapter. the mc does get an old soul (xianxia duex ex machina that makes mc a god)who gets him into funny troubles every turn. and the recent chapters the battle scenes are delicious.
and for translation. if you persist till chapter 50ish you will get used to the Chinese terms

Give it a try if you dont mind learning some new words

Really good novel if you can get past the subpar translations. The translators dont feel like translating everything due to laziness or some other reason so you end up with a lot of chinese words like jinshi(spirit stones) or xiuzhen(cultivation) so the first 50 or so chapters will have you looking at the glossary to try and understand wtf they are talking about. Thankfully after a while you get used to it since the words they dont translate tend to repeat a lot, even then it can be pretty confusing since some chinese words are really similar which can make you go back and reread paragraphs because you mistook spirit stones for spirit energy or whatnot.

If you can get past the foolish translators the story is really fresh and unique. The main character is basically pushed into becoming a badass, the story is slow though and the first 200 or so chapters are basically just setting the groundwork for the real beginning of his cultivation. Overall the story is a breath of fresh air, the characters are all interesting and most characters get some sort of development even the minor side characters, there are underlying mysteries with the main character and his "companions", and the concept of a xianxia where the cultivators are kinda like an empire which takes over Jie(planets/planes) for more resources while competing with other species/races (native or otherwise) is interesting.

Unreadable translation

I don't know how anyone can read this crap.

All the story related nouns are untranslated, TL notes at the end of chapters explain what some of them mean but not all. You basically need to switch back and forth between chapters nearly every single sentence. Also the syntax of the sentences are a downright mess. No idea why the translator decided to translate this way, its worse than reading MTL material.

I like this series anyway, but the amount of pinyin in it is so much, it's just hard to understand, i have to check the glossary everytime, i am at chapter 28 so far, it is a bit tiring, so i'll put on hold and read when i get the energy to continue.

Not a copy/paste novel!!! Amazing! Far better than those novels with bullied MC who become suddenly OP and create useless problems. Currently my 2nd favorite novel after ISSTH !

i'm really enjoying this one.
the fact that our mc wants to be a farmer rather than an arrogant power-hungry martial cultivator makes it a nice change from most of the other xianxai i've read. i can only think of one or two others where the mc doesn't turn into a total jerk with a hair-trigger temper and a tendency to overreact to insults (as in 'you called me trash so i will break all your bones, destroy your cultivation forever, and possibly take revenge by killing your whole family, too.' ) within the first few chapters.
the mystery of who mind-wiped him and changed his face is intriguing enough to keep me interested and coming back. hopefully he doesn't become a revenge driven bad tempered jerk-a** in the coming chapters.
edit:
over 100 chapters in and i am still loving zuo mo!! i'm so glad they are translating such a unique and interesting story. and its funny, which is great!

Xiuzhen Shijie (World of Cultivation) is the tale of a disgruntled young man and his quest to be the best farmer he can be, at least if it wasn't for those annoying people keep getting in the way of his pursuit of agricultural excellence.

Will conspiring forces turn him into a sword cultivator, or will he manage to throw off the shackles of fate and grow he best darn crops in the sect? Those airheaded cultivators dream of too much nonsense and don't know how to live properly, they need to get a real job to earn some jingshi for a living like a normal person!

Dumbasses.
