Description
Paris, late 19th century. Vanitas is a human who works as a doctor for vampires and wishes to save them. He uses a magical book called The Vanitas Grimoire to dispel an evil curse that corrupts vampires and turns them into blood-sucking monsters.
But...this very same book is rumoured to be the cursed tome that gives birth to vampires on nights when the blue moon is full. Noe is a vampire on the hunt for The Grimoire.
Who, really, is Dr Vanitas? What are the secrets that he holds, and what fate do those secrets spell for the vampire species?

Odd to think there aren't many reviews of this manga compared to PH. Anyways, I've been following since the announcement and same-day releases helped me out. I admit I like Fantasy France as I like seeing all the different landmarks and there's actually world-building going on vs just somewhere in Europe. It's a different take on vampires than I've read about and I was super iffy since man, vampires again?
I like the smaller cast and the same kind of odd humor with everyone and I really miss Gil. The one aspect I have to say that I hope it's not too confusing as the pace picks up and more story arcs are introduced. Also there's a adorable cat :3c
In terms of characterization, I have to say Vanitas reminds me of Break/Vincent and ofc Noel is always the dedicated valet/partner.
I feel like the last few ch w/the Wolf and the Church have been a bit confusing so here's to hoping it'll be resolved later.

It has been so long since "the city of flowers" has been the center of a decent story in manga. Too bad the French turned it into a s***-hole after blanketing it with soot...I hope this Mochizuki manga continues to gain more recognition, I really like the "steampunk" setting.
Up to Chapter 8, I don't think the next one will come out until the 22/23 of the month. I Binge read the first 8 chapters and just want more
Fun fact: You will get to see what Oz would have looked like if he was a girl.

Typical Mochizuki

I always thought, should Mochizuki ever do a vampire series, it might be something like Blood Parade -- bloody and Gothic and with bishounen galore. And then she actually does announce a vampire series -- and throws it into a steampunk setting -- and all my expectations get thrown straight out the window (though, of course, I'm still expecting bloody and Gothic and bishounen-filled). At the time of this writing, with only two chapters released thus far, I can say that Vanitas no Carte is typical Mochizuki -- which is to say, it's typical "form your expectations now because she's going to crush and scramble them thoroughly some time in the distant future."
VnC starts out as your typical above-average shounen fantasy-adventure series. A mythos is established, back stories are being constructed, and characters are introduced like icebergs with wary readers already searching their depths. Chapter one drops an endgame "spoiler," and we're left wondering about the path that leads to that end. And if we've learned anything from Pandora Hearts, then we should know it's going to be one heck of a ride getting there and that things most certainly aren't going to go as expected.
Again, with only two chapters out so far, there isn't all that much to say at this point in time, save, perhaps, for a warning: Readers with soft hearts, beware!
