This story suffers a little from emotional whiplash, but I forgive it for being the mangaka's first work and also being confined to one volume.

The beginning did such a good job at gutting me emotionally. I could really feel Icchi's crush on Ayumi and Takatsuki's trepidation and pain at seeing those feelings. I felt like Takatasuki's character and part in this story was written really well. Great job on that.

Icchi, however, I felt was quite inconsistent. I really felt and believed that his feelings for Ayumi were real. I thought he was really characterized well in the beginning as an immature and confused boy that didn't know what to do about his crush on a girl. I wanted to see this part in the story play out, but it switched over to Icchi liking Takatsuki instead, I felt I didn't get enough development to see these feelings grow organically. It felt like it just came out of the blue, plot convenient. I feel like it would have been better to dedicate a chapter or two to Icchi honestly dating Ayumi and then finding out that crush feelings don't necessarily translate well to relationships. From there, I feel like I could understand Icchi coming to rely on and look toward Takatsuki more instead. Pity that this mangaka probably had to truncate her story in order to make it fit into the one volume.

Still recommended as a light read! I'll definitely look into more of this mangaka's works.

Kinda Cute, Kinda Nonconsensual

Kissing with consent is present and I would really like to stop romanticizing it now, so besides that bit I really love the manner in which this is drawn, the characters interaction, Icchi’s growth from a shy character to a more assertive one, Ayumi’s courage at being able to put her feelings into action, the fulfillment of Takatsuki’s desire to desire, and the happy ending. I love this, and it’s not chaotic at all.

This WAS a good story. Not everything has to revolve around it being "cute" and fluffy and pure. Sometimes it's ok if someone's kind of an idiot. Ootani is a teenager. He's maybe a little behind his peers in his development. It happens. He wasn't abnormally or even unrealistically dense or pigheaded. He was confused. And acted the way people do when they're confused. He was just doing what he thought he should and what society taught him he should be doing, and thinking about anything outside of that was stressful so he just didn't. He buried it. It took him being backed in to a corner to force him to think about it, and when he did, he accepted it. He didn't want to hurt anyone and wasn't doing so willfully.

Anyway, it was sweet, and I enjoyed it.
