Description
Rygart Arrow is the only one in his world who lacks the inherent ability to power up quartz, the energy source that makes all of the machines run. Nevertheless, he's pretty well connected. The King and Queen of his country of Krisna happen to be old college friends. But so is Zess, the guy who is leading the army of a neighboring kingdom in an attack on Krisna.
How did it comes to this? There's little time to ponder the implications as an army in giant, mechanized battle suits attacks. Arrow just feels like he's in the way - until he comes across a powerful, ancient mech that no one has yet ... More...

Honestly I do love Yoshinaga Yunosuke's work. Good artwork, but not really creative in design style, the same as in his previous manga. The story he makes always related in political conflict between some country and the main character involved unconsciously.
The heroine is always some important figure in political reign and the hero is always some no body in the beginning.
Mecha.... I don't like it. but I like how the author tell the story. It has very deep meaning in telling someone life and how other character involved. As we readers read this manga, there's no character trully good or evil. Everyone has their own problem and dedication to make them do what they should do.
Basically I like the story and I don't like the mecha things. But I still like this manga.
And the fact that this manga happens to be an anime movie, it's a good news.
I could predict that this manga will become much great when the story goes on. So it's worth to read.

Interestingly, it will have a six-part movie anime by Production I.G out in 2010

The summary sounded really interesting and i was looking forward for a very good series, but as i read the manga it failed to captivate me, i'm not sure why...maybe the presentation isn't really good, and the pace is too fast.
The drawings are ok, but kinda messy at times especially during the mecha battles (although that's quite common in manga). Also, the relationships between the characters really annoy me, i.e. the queen seemingly being romantically interested in the main protagonist...but she's married to the King...huh? Thats so messed up! and quite irritating. Perhaps i'm being unfair and that they have their reasons, but i simply couldn't go on reading as i lost all interest. I'm also tired of the theme where old friends become bitter enemies.
However, the mechas are awesome. The concept of their technology is interesting, and the setting and the world has so much potential to be epic.

Although only 2 volumes are out, the author puts an interesting twist in the story by describing a world that has almost non-existent supplies of fossil fuels. For us, without fossil fuels, many of our day-to-day actives and the things we take for granted would be non-existent ranging from transport to our current arsenal of weaponry. The author, however, plugs that gap with quartz and magic.
Before I get into a detailed description of the world I'll give you an idea of what the manga is like. The author seems confident of capturing the audience with their plot and art (I'm afraid I'm one of their victims) as there are no excessive fan service characters/moments in the beginning which are prevalent in other manga like Ubel Blatt. The plot is about an insignificant other rising to importance through luck (and ties with the royal family) and helps defend one's country. There also might be more to the main character than one first conceived. That plot line may seem cliched but the author adds life to it through a captivating and rich world.
Breakblade is not just another mecha in a genre amongst renditions of the same thing. The unique thing about it is the world that the author has crafted. Instead of using fossil fuels they use something akin to earthbending but works only on quartz. Trained craftsman can manipulate quartz into instruments (motorcycles, gears, lamps, ligands, artificial tendons. . .) that otherwise would've needed the energy stored in fossil fuels to produce. Now how they're powered is where the magic comes in. Almost everybody in the world has an internal power to refine, manipulate, and control quartz (it's not as dramatic as earthbending; an individual can't erect a wall of quartz just by stomping one's feet) . So they'll be able to power a quartz lamp by touching it.
The technology of that era seems to be modeled after modern tech. There are quartz motorcycles, rifles, lamps, and quartz gundams. The architecture of the buildings are more medieval than modern; there are no sky scrapers and the cities are walled. The mechs so far are usually equipped with rifles and shields. They do not fly, of course, and close quarters combat (swords) between heavier mechs is still a viable tactic.
The art drawn by the author is refreshing and imaginative. When I mentioned motorcycles earlier, they are not copies of modern bikes but modeled after the author's own unique—or even futuristic--style. That style is consistent throughout the manga so every thing's new and yet not new at the same time. The characters are nicely drawn, no disproportionate figures that by one look screams fan service. The female characters are all a beauty—which is of big significance in my opinion ^^--but, to every man his own, so this observance may not be agreeable with you.
So, enough reading my comment. Pick up a volume and see it for yourself.
4/5 stars for a great beginning and novel world and hopes that it'll stay gold.

I love mech stuff but this one's pretty mediocre. Nothing wrong with that. It has a few fun elements and looks liek it will progress well, but for now it's just very average

I just finished reading the fourth volume and i must say that this manga has a really intriguing plot. I would like to find out where the storyline would lead. I enjoyed the art work, and I must add I am not a mecha person, so this is the first mecha manga that I actually enjoyed reading. Of all the other mecha that I have attempted to read, this is the only one that i did not abandon after the first few chapters.

Despite having read dozens all kind of mangas, liked only few mecha oriented. This one instead was really nice. Story is quite good, has potential to become quite long, drawing is better than average and suits this. Giving 8 after first impression after 5 chaps, but if the quality keeps on, it propably rises to 10.

This is a very excellent Mecha Manga. Usually the problem with this genre in this format is hard to follow action sequences, but that is not an issue here at all. Good art, good Mech designs, and a good story so far. Well worth reading.

ahaha... I'm a little biased here saying this, but Break Blade is GOOD! Read it! I don't know why it's so unpopular... I mean the art is rather good, the action is so fast-paced and there's a lot of fighting and all that shounen-goodness, and it's got an intriguing plot... Yeah. Yay for Break Blade!
