“Good morning, want some work, illustrator? We have this erotic web-comic, yes. It’s about a cute and innocent looking student that discovers her perverted side when being stared at by a fat ugly guy. Oh, and your editor is likely sight impaired.”
“Sigh, i guess i’ll take it.”
I bet this was the initial conversation that led to creation of this webcomic.
Anyways, lets start with the plot. Spoliers ahead, LOL (not that there’s much to spoil).
Young innocent prim proper girl is freaked out but also weirdly conscious of a gross fat otaku that stares at her like a psycho during university circle introduction. She gets wet from him. He later molests her on the train. She is disgusted but can’t forget it… in an excited sense.
She has a boyfriend; they are intimate but she feels something is lacking. She discovers her perverted side as well as slight S tendencies and he simply can’t do boring stuff. Oh yeah, the boyfriend is also cheating on her as arranged by his cousin, who wants them to break up so he can pounce on her himself.
She gets hold of fat guy’s phone and calls him out to a dark park, officially to reprimand him. In a dark park. While dressed in practically nothing. He might be gross but he ain’t stupid so he knows what she wants and pounces on her. She at first resists but then admits it feels good. Probably because he’s got a cannon down there. She’s satisfied with that too.
Other stuff happens, she breaks up with her BF and she and fat guy are often having sex cause she kinda likes the feeling and he likes her because she is hot.
But they have a fallout due to her insulting him and trying to humiliate him (“I’m above you, I'm more worth than you, I have options, you don’t” blabla). But it doesn’t work, he has his pride and holds his ground, leaving when she tells him to either leave or do suck it up. Which shocks her and she is visibly hurt by him leaving. But she has her pride, so instead of apologizing, what does she do? Yea, goes to self-destruct and revenge on her bf for cheating trip. Even tho she already dumped him and was cheating with him too.
So she contacts the cousin of her boyfriend, goes with him for a drink and then to the hotel. Once there, she tries to dominate him as well (refuses to take a shower and wants him to lick her P where the fat guy licked as well).
Only, this time it doesn’t go well.
! THIS guy isn’t a pushover and also isn’t a nice guy; he has a history of violence against girls. A slap or two later she realizes “oh sht, I’m in deep sht and need to get out”. But she can’t, he guards the door and is bent on having sex with her.
So, she reluctantly accepts to have sex, but she isn’t excited and he also isn’t feeling it. So, she tries to ditch when he proposes an*l which she refuses but he jumps at her.
! In her fear and terror, she realizes that she was wrong, that she was stupid to think she can control guys and want revenge, even tho she was cheating as well. she hopes someone comes to save her. then the door slams open, it’s the fat guy. The bad guy called him for something, and wants fat guy to hold her so he can do her. Thinking he betrayed her; her spirit is broken and she accepts the back door.
! But the fat guy tries to stop him and yells she doesn’t want it and is then attacked by bad guy. He yells for her to run while on the ground, and she runs to the hallway to yell for help, but no one answers. She is dragged back by her hair when the bad guy is kicked to the floor.
! It’s the boyfriend of one of her friends that are also at hotel. And this guy can fight. So he takes care of the bad guy, and FMC cries. The end.
Just kidding. Cue time skip, she is sitting and chilling with a freshman (who is either cameo or early draft of protagonist in another webcomic by the same author) and saying she’s waiting for her boyfriend to return from the army. Then her boyfriend appears behind her. Its the fat guy. Only he isn’t fat anymore, he is now tall, mature, muscular and smiling gently at her. Manga ends with her thought that now her happiness begins.
Now, this plot in itself isn’t bad, it has all elements one would need; dramatic tension, climax and good resolution that follows rules of storytelling better than most manhwa (I’m looking at you, "My office noona" and "Falling for her", with your fake, melodramatic non-endings).
Speaking of endings, ending is perhaps the best part of this manhwa (unironically). There’s a happy ending with even a little redemption arc in there. The fat ugly guy is shown to actually get his sht together and is now in shape and normal, even if still not a pretty boy.
With this ending, it’s a 4/10 for me. With a bad ending, it’s have been 2/10.
ARTWORK
Artwork is pretty unusual for a pornhwa (none of that generic plasticky drawing style) and can be described as only bordering on manga-style proper, and can be described as a mix between Western noir comics and, unexpectedly, from Hayao Miyazaki’s works, esp from Lupin III, where Si-Eun’s expressions resemble Fujiko’s expressions. Art itself gives even a bit of a vintage vibe (which is good).
Now, art style sometimes is detailed (when showing Si-Eun’s facial expressions and Si-Eun in clothes) but is often crude - even croquis – elsewhere, especially when showing the naked body, and also infamously during sex scenes. In almost all instances of sex there is a lack of shading and nuance. And although there are a few instances early on when her body is drawn well, later on it just becomes so simplistic i have to wonder, is this even “usable”?
Now, crude art style sometimes can be enjoyable, because it reminds me (i’m older) of more simple drawing styles from the 70s. it’s a nice nostalgic touch if you’re not into erotic stuff. But the problem is, this is a pornhwa, and bad art during sex that’s just bad practice for a pornhwa. I have to wonder, how did this make it past an editor in 2016? It’s not 1981.
GOOD POINTS
She is cute. Credit where credit is due.
Facial expressions are well drawn and detailed.
Fat guy isn’t a pushover
During plot development, you can see her FAFO and come to realization that makes her grow and improve as a person.
Ending is good.
BAD POINTS
Chapter layout – often storyline will jump from focusing on one pair of characters to another, mid-chapter and mid-action. Guys, this is a basic erotic manhwa webcomic, simple is good, and also you have to have “blocks” of action from start to finish, it’s more conductive to being used. Here, the user is just…. Confused.
Character development – as you can expect, there isn’t much character development. But, what is confusing are Si-Eun’s changes in character. She goes from a scared wallflower to a Fujiko-style hard boiled noir heroine, just like that. Now, but wheres the social know how for this? She just flips a switch, and this is weird.
Gross factor - Now look, i have nothing against a plotline where a cute girl is attracted to a fat ugly guy. But at least make him human. The fat ugly guy is REALLY fat and ugly, including with teeth and saliva and weird psycho eyes and all. I am happy to see fat and ugly guys be MC once in a while, but do at least try to make them look and act human. OK, he does change later and at the end, but it would have been better if he was a bit more chill in first half of the plot.
Sex scenes – sex scenes of main heroine are too not-revealing. I don’t mean you need to go full on AV ninja style poses, but there is surprisingly little to go by technically, when it comes to sex proper. There is not a lot of actual drawings of actual sexual intercourse (mind, this is a pornhwa) and even those are not really detailed. Even in important sex scenes, between her and ugly dude, there is not a lot to go by. A few drawings of clothed sex, crudely drawn, weirdly zoomed out, no climax, nothing.
This could have been handled so much better, longer and more detailed. Again, this is a pornhwa. it’s a technical requirement.
But what really gets is is how Si-Eun’s breasts are drawn. I mean holy smokes, is this 1930? Did the author really, REALLY never see a woman’s nude chest?? And even if this ever got drawn, how the heck did this pass the editor? Si-Eun’s naked breasts look ridiculous, like literal two balloons with nipples as a “OK finnne” gesture by the artist who obviously didn’t want to draw them. They are just round, press against each other randomly (in real life unsuspended breasts will be apart) even when she is completely naked. First time I saw it, I snorted in disbelief that ANYONE reviewing a chapter before upload would actually say “nah, this is good, publish it”. If I was that editor’s superior, he/she’d be assigned to toilet cleaning duty for a month as punishment. Yes, for a month.
CONCLUSION
Well, not spectacular, but i think it is what it is; a contracted work, written and drawn to be published instead of work of heart. I’d say 4/10 and I’m being generous.
ADDENDUM:
Upon further scrutiny I came to conclusion that the artist likely has two works at least, this one and “She is too much for me”. Similarity in artist’s names is obvious, as is a small hint at the end of this manga; in the final chapter, the new female student is hanging out with FMC, and she looks like the heroine of “She is too much for me”. Coincidence?
Coincidentally, this second manga was drawn with much more heart, hinting that that is what the author preferred to draw.
