Good Dark Fantasy Story

The first volume is a promising start to a fairly fast paced dark fantasy light novel series. I would take the dark part seriously since the main character Yuki gets put through a lot of suffering, which helps make it a page turner. Luckily, the dark parts are balanced out with a lovable cast (though I want to see more of the side characters' backstories) and a strong main character. The story messes with a lot of the cross world and fantasy story tropes--keeping some, playing with others, and tossing some main ones out the window. This is the type of story where the main character gets put through hell and does NOT get saved by the prince or some romance interest, which I found really refreshing. Plus, she can actually fight--not with a super ability earned from going to another world, but because she's learned archery from a young age and loves it.

The romance is kind of slow in the first volume since the main male character thinks she's only ten, but there are cute side couples that make up for that. On another note, the localization is pretty good and the English reads smoothly. The cliff hanger ending left me wanting to find out what happens next. Hopefully the rest of the series is as good as the first volume! You should give it a try if you like dark fantasy stories.
