Pretty Pictures

Boichi's art style is remarkable, and all the action scenes in the story were great fun.

Conversely, the plot is all over the place (full of plot holes, a questionable conclusion, tons of unanswered questions and open parentheses, and eventually even supernatural stuff), to the point that I'm very glad the mangaka eventually decided to collaborate on Dr. Stone with a writer.

In terms of the larger plot, I got particularly frustrated that...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
... the FL receives a lethal wound, and the superintelligent protagonist makes no attempt to save her by any of the gazillion options available to him in this sci-fi story. Eventually he even receives supernatural godlike power, and still doesn't use it to revive her.

Overall verdict: If you're fine with reading technobabble with pretty pictures and exciting action scenes, then Origin is pretty great. However, if you're hoping for a hard sci-fi story, or even a soft sci-fi story with a plot that makes sense, then I suggest to stay far away.

Should be more popular

Ive only read 12 chapters, but I'm already feeling that this series is severely underrated.. The art, subtle humor, and characterization are top tier and I'm surprised this series isn't more popular.

The plot is well paced without taking itself too seriously either. If you enjoy stories about self actualization and/or sci-fi dystopias then you owe it to yourself to check this series out.

A story about the main character, not the plot.

This is definitely a story that focuses on the main character's development through the environment around him as he comes to terms with his reality. This is gorgeously executed. Every experience adds a new aspect to his personality and character. He is extremely interesting for obvious reasons.

I was hesitant to read this in fear of it just being another flawed dystopian world with a cliché character, however this just was not the case. Great read if you need a thriller/fish-out-of-water manga.

Since there are no recommendations, I'll add one myself. If you liked this, you'll probably like the following:

This was way better than I thought. The story is truly interesting making me want more. The art is just amazing, character design, background everything. The mc is a pretty cool guy, he's got some interesting inner thoughts. Cant wait for the next chapter.
