Description
Looking for peace, Gen Suda decided to attend high school somewhere far from his home, in another prefecture, where his distant relatives run the local temple, which will become Gen’s new home and the start of his new life shared with his formerly tomboyish older female cousin, Chion Koterasawa: hardworking, numb and indifferent - at least seemingly, and can appearances be trusted?

Neko no Otera no Chion-san is a nice little slice-of-life manga that's not too difficult to read and has lots of cute cats. That said, the pacing and development are slow, which may affect your enjoyment of it.

Chapter 73 in particular:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
includes a hug between Hiruma and Suda, two characters who never really seem to get along, despite being in the same friend group for most of the manga. I dislike the hug, and Hiruma's admission that she liked Suda, because it comes out of nowhere. Also, there was nothing to suggest that Hiruma could even stand Suda, much less that she had romantic feelings for him. So that was bunk for me.

The romance in the story is very subtle but you can understand what the author means between the lines, if you know what i mean... That said, the story is beautiful, light and you will probably fall in love! for those who like slice-of-life this is the perfect story to read

Cozy, comfortable, and cats

This manga is super cozy and comfortable. Perfectly portrays the bitter and the sweet of the youth.

I really appreciate the realism of the characters; they all have their own concerns, dreams, hopes, et cetera, be it in Gen, Chion, Gen's classmates, or Chion's grandma, who are all in different stages of life. It makes the manga so much more relatable, in a way that makes me feel, "Oh, this is such a normal thing to feel."

The plot itself also doesn't really have outrageous conflicts or reactions from the characters. It flows really nicely, befitting of a slice of life genre set in a rural town.

The art is beautiful. The people and the animals are wonderful!

OJIRO Makoto has great skills that permit him to combine this set of experiences perfectly. It's the story of the experience of a teenage boy who manages to find himself in a peaceful, accepting little town he's been to before when he was little, with a very attractive young girl a little older than him. Ojiro has told similar stories before, and they're always sweet and idyllic. The experience here is also heightened by his providing exquisite drawing of the characters, the small town, and the old temple of relatives where the boy has come to live to attend high school. So far there is little conflict, just some foreshadowing of some, but what there is instead is the kind of lovely immediacy of experience that, though Gen doesn't know it now, will become beloved memories to be cherished all his life—no matter, I think, how the possible romance latent in this situation ultimately works out.

This manga is likely many other rural sweet slices of life in tone, but this time with characters of both sexes present to add to the experience. I love it!
