Really lovely

I feel like lately a lot of many characters are edgier, or just straight up terrible people. They're for revenge, and go after it no holds barred- even if that means they rape/murder their way to the top. Or they're just overpowered and don't really care about the little guy, or helping people is just kind of a side effect of everything else they're doing.

In comparison, Saihate no Paladin features an actually GOOD main character. He isn't perfect, and struggles like everyone else, but he always tries his best to help the people around him. Its purposeful instead of accidental, and is just so wholesome.
Beyond that, the author does a really good job at world-building and setting the scene. My only complaint is that it is a monthly release, so with the slower pace of the story it can be hard to remember what happened last month.

Thinking about it, it gives me distinct Vinland Saga (post-slavery arc) vibes. The main character here is what Thorfinn eventually grows into, albeit more religious here.

Speaking of Religion, I really like how it is done in this story. Religion isn't really something that is featured in a lot of manga, aside from exorcists and such. But here it is a core tenet of the main character without being overly preachy. It is just a facet of his character, and done well.

The first few chapters are a little slow, but they really lay the foundation for the strong character and world building that happens about 10 chapters in.

Atheism is much more common than faith in manga and light novels, and priest-like characters usually turn out to be either shallow or villainous, but this novel does a stunning job of showcasing faith. I really like the fact that the main character, subject to the very common trope of being a reincarnator, ends up finding his purpose and path in the god that made the most impact in his life. So many manga and light novels have the main character's reincarnation be good for nothing except a random background event or and explanation for their material goods and powers (dimensional space, special powers, etc). It's so rarely a directional factor for growth.

I've heard some disappointed reviews of the next few volumes so I'm crossing my fingers for the future.

Unexpected Gem

First of all, let me say that it's been a very long time since I last recommended a series - which I wholeheartedly do here.
From the synopsis, hell, from my recent desire to just read light-novels and manga where I can switch off and enjoy a good story, I was completely unprepared for this manga.
This manga reads like a high fantasy novel - an exceptional one at that - and the author has woven an incredibly emotional story, filled with details and worldbuilding that I hope will continue to live up to my, now stratospheric, expectations.
The art is beautiful, at times featuring especially gorgeous double-page spreads, and serves to really make you savour the already immersive writing even more.
If you are looking for a manga in this genre and have the time to commit to a few, generously long chapters, thus far, you'd be remiss in your duty to yourself as a reader if you didn't give this a decent shot.
I wouldn't be surprised if this already ends up being my best find of 2019 - and it might be yours too 😀

I have been enchanted

This author is a master at storytelling, character development, and has paid attention to all the fine details. I honestly feel like everything I want to extol, even the most mundane parts, is enough to warrant a spoiler alert due to unexpectedly fantastic execution.

This author has a penchant and talent for impactful surprises. I was often left with the thoughts, "No author! You can't do that! Stop, please stop! My heart can't take this nor can my teary eyes endure!" However, the author ignored my pleas and continued their sadistic abuse that enraptured my heart.

Some might call this manga a hidden gem, but I would go as far to say that it is clearly an elite work wholly worthy of the laurels of storytelling. Once again, I have been enchanted.

An excellent character driven manga

The best written characters with excellent character growth , not your run-of-the-mill isekai. The people in this story come very much alive and tug at dusty old hearstrings as you feel you grow with them.

So far (Ch 16) it's excellent 10/10 hope it continues to be.
I like the depth of the story, not too dark not too bright, makes it somewhat relatable and enjoyable to read.

"Bring light to the faraway darkness"

This series restored my faith in manga. For such a long time I've read the same generic stories and tropes over and over again without any quality or uniqueness to them. This is truly the light in the darkness, and I can only sit with anticipation for each new chapter released. I really hope the author takes their time with this to make it the best they possibly can, even if it takes longer than expected. So many times I read stories with no real sense of world or creativity, where everything feels so artificial. Although short so far, you can feel that the author has fleshed out this world and its lore. Each new chapter is a treat.

I'm still waiting for bannerlord, so trust me when I say that I can wait. =)

Mostly very good.

This is mostly a very good fantasy story with an almost entirely irrelevant isekai subtheme. I particularly like that, while it features an overpowered protagonist, a) he's not at the top of the food chain (e.g. he's clearly weaker than the gods), b) most problems he confronts can't be solved with force, or rather, c) the story spends very little time on battles he'll obviously win.

The only part that really annoyed me was an infuriatingly terribad tropey scene in chapter 38:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The protagonist receives a god's revelation / prophecy that he will die if he confronts an evil dragon. He hesitates until he witnesses a companion's courage. Then he decides to confront the dragon after all because, and I quote, "It's not as if our chances of winning are absolutely zero".

So the protagonist, who until this point had behaved very reasonably, goes on a suicide mission for no good reason, and brings his companions along.

The rest of the story is really good, but that scene was atrocious.
