and here I was expecting a psychological plot rip. very underwhelming, main couple lacks foundation.
Original, but underwhelming.

The idea behind the story is unique and interesting. Its kind of a mystery romance manga, and it really does keep you interested in finding out what really happened to Aki in the past. However, I'm not sure what made the main characters fall in love with each other as there seems to be a much deeper connection/history between Chihiro and his first love. Theres not much to judge off of though, and thats why it was a bit underwhelming. Also, I agree with some of the things that the first reviewer mentioned.

This manga shows us the importance of perception and how an incorrect twist of one could potentially lead to disastrous results. The mysterious tone in the first half was actually quite effective at grabbing the audience's attention, though sadly the reveal in the latter half was far too dry to compensate for the lack of good romance and character development, both of which were sidelined and sacrificed to make room for the mystery's screentime. I came to like the characters only after we've got to know all their circumstances in the extra chapter at the end, because before that their personalities were basically non-existent and non-established. The unusual narrative employed to tell the story could only do so much to add spice to it if there was barely any meat on the bones inside the stew pot in the first place.

Natsugami Chihiro has always been tormented by his past after he met his first love, hiding in one of the abandoned buildings of his hometown. But the memories weren't all that pretty because the guy disappeared without any word after Chihiro saw him being violated. Years later, Chihiro decided to go back to his hometown to look back and face his past so he could try to move on into the present, with his junior Miyoshi, who has romantic feelings towards him, tagging along.
Natsu ni Tokeru Himitsu no Koi gives you a meaningful plot, diverting from "keep looking foward" by most of the pessimist main characters. Along with its vibe of mystery, and with its slow pace to give thrill to the readers, this is the kind of manga that'll make you read the whole book in one go - or suffer the rest of the day if you happen to have stopped at any of the chapters in between before the main conclusion.
This book focused less on the love story between the two main characters and instead, explored more of the mystery behind Chihiro's first love - making the whole "moving on" theme expressed well alongside with some ups and downs with the main characters' tracking adventure. Still, Fukami Hisato-sensei didn't fail to deliver that sweetness and silliness between their seme and uke with slightest touches, fights and definitely, a few touch of drama and suspense.
If you're in for a good book with a unique style of telling a story, this is gotta be the ice breaker that you've been searching for.

So it was a really original story and gripped me all the way through. You want to know what really happened in the past between the main character and his first love, and there's something about the main character's new love that makes you think he might be linked to the whole thing.
It's a really sweet story that's well thought out. Along the way, though, I couldn't help feeling like there was something fundamentally boring about it also. Because there was so much of a focus on the past and how caught up the main character is with it, the romance that is supposed to be going on in the present takes a back seat.
I wasn't at all convinced about the main character being in love with the new guy. You don't really get to see them falling in love, the feelings are just sort of supposed to be there already. There's nothing particularly appealing about the new love interest either, so I would really have enjoyed it more if the main character got together with his first love from the past instead.
In the end I was thinking, wow this pairing is so boring. And I think it's because the pairing of the main character and his first love was given more focus. The new love was a bit immature as well - acting like a child now and again. Found him annoying.
