Not Horrible

The art in this manga is very pretty, especially the cover. I really like the style and would love to see more from this author, but, to me, the stories were lacking. They were good ideas that I thought would be interesting, but each time I couldn't find myself that invested in the characters, at least to the point of wanting to reread the story. I've had this manga for a little while and have gone over it several times trying to decide whether or not I like it, but each time I seem to only come back to look at a few specific pages rather than relive the experience of the story. If you're on the fence about buying it, I would recommend doing so if you have the extra money to spend. You may end up liking it a lot! It's not a horrible manga, just not something I could really get into.

A mixed bag

First some comments on the production quality and editing of this book, since this is one of the first releases from Fakku's new BL imprint Kuma. In no particular order:
1) gorgeous dust jacket, no "yaoi" or "parental advisory" polluting the design. Color page is also beautiful.
2) I can’t speak to the accuracy of the translation, but it reads very smoothly and I didn’t notice any typos. SFX are replaced and nicely rendered.
3) I don’t think honorifics were retained, except in one instance when the issue came up as to whether one character should use "-san" for another character. I guess that’s an ok solution but most BL readers, including myself, prefer honorifics retained as they provide a wealth of information about relationship dynamics, and have no simple, satisfactory English equivalent.
4) Buying directly through Fakku, digital downloads are included in the purchase. High quality options are available in zip or PDF format.
5) I was expecting it to be uncensored, since it’s a Fakku product, but the art is on the sketchy side in the first place, and the sex scenes aren’t too detailed, so it was hard to tell if anything is missing/censored. (I really, REALLY hope they can bring us uncensored BL.)

As for the stories and art, neither are really my cup of tea. Except for the cover and color page, which I like a lot, the art is sketchy as I mentioned, and while that can be fine, in this case it feels incomplete/unpolished. The stories lack depth/substance, and combined with a couple of traumatic events that occur offscreen
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
(a murder and sexual abuse)
are not exactly pleasant or enjoyable. I see the description above uses the word "literary," and I find that’s often code for "depressing."

So a mixed bag; while I’m not crazy about this book, the production quality is fantastic and I am definitely looking forward to future offerings from Kuma.
