Fragile Bonds: Exploring Familial Disconnection
by Deago
June 21st, 2023, 5:24pm
Rating: 4.0  / 10.0
Promise Cinderella presents an engaging yet problematic premise with its age gap romance at the forefront. The manga's strength lies in its ability to create well-rounded and relatable mature characters. Hayame Katsuragi, the 27-year-old protagonist, emerges as a resilient and courageous individual despite facing immense hardships. Her transformation from a housewife to a homeless divorcee adds depth to her character. Similarly, Issei, the 17-year-old male lead, starts as a spoiled rich boy but evolves through his interactions with Hayame.

One of the central themes explored in Promise Cinderella revolves around individuals who have experienced failure in life and grapple with self-esteem issues, often leading to self-destructive tendencies. The manga delves into the psychological and emotional struggles faced by such individuals, emphasising their inclination to distance themselves from family and friends due to feelings of burden and guilt. They believe that their mere existence would only bring harm and hurt to those close to them.

This theme finds resonance in the backgrounds of both Hayame and Issei, the two main characters of the manga; Hayame's father plays a crucial role in the manga by depicting his detachment from her, intensifying her emotional struggles and deepening her sense of inadequacy and self-doubt. Hayame's father is depicted as a key character in the story, who distanced himself from Hayame, his daughter. This poignant portrayal of the unfortunate parental disconnection emphasises the toll it takes on Hayame's self-esteem and emotional well-being, leading her to distance herself from others as well due to the absence of a nurturing and supportive father figure. Consequently, the manga delves into the profound impact that familial disconnection can have on an individual's life.

Amidst Hayame's initially content life as a 27-year-old housewife, circumstances take a drastic turn, resulting in her divorce and homelessness. The manga captures her descent into despair, vividly illustrating the self-destructive behavior she exhibits in response to her failures. Through Hayame's struggles, the series highlights the detrimental effects of failure on one's self-esteem. This exploration serves as a reminder of the challenges individuals face when confronted with personal setbacks and the toll it can take on their overall well-being.

Similarly, Issei, the 17-year-old male lead, comes from a privileged background as a spoiled rich boy. However, his experiences with Hayame and their shared hardships prompt him to confront his own issues of self-esteem and familial disconnection. Issei's mother, like Hayame's father, has distanced herself from him, adding to his emotional turmoil. Through the characters of Hayame and Issei, Promise Cinderella sheds light on the common struggles faced by individuals who have experienced parental figures distancing themselves, compounding their feelings of inadequacy and guilt.

Throughout the series, both Hayame and Issei undergo personal growth, gradually learning to confront their insecurities and re-establish connections with their loved ones. Their journeys serve as a poignant reminder that even in the face of failure and despair, it is possible to rebuild self-esteem and find solace through genuine human connections.

By exploring the theme of self-esteem and familial disconnection, Promise Cinderella offers a relatable portrayal of the struggles faced by individuals who feel burdened by their own existence. It encourages readers to reflect on the impact of their own actions and emotions, urging empathy and understanding for those who may be battling similar issues. This thematic exploration adds depth and emotional resonance to the narrative, making Promise Cinderella a thought-provoking manga that goes beyond a simple romantic dramedy.

However, the manga's narrative occasionally succumbs to unnecessary drama and an overabundance of antagonistic characters. This excess dilutes the story's realism and impact, stretching the boundaries of believability. While conflict is essential for driving the plot forward or generating tension, an excessive number of antagonists can hinder character development and overshadow the central themes. By introducing numerous villainous characters, the manga loses some of its authenticity and compromises its potential for a more nuanced exploration of interpersonal relationships.

The rushed ending of Promise Cinderella is a significant drawback. In the final volume, the author draws attention to unresolved problems, such as Hayame's strained relationship with her father, but fails to provide satisfactory resolutions. The conclusion feels like a cop-out, leaving readers hanging and relying on hope and wishful thinking for the characters' future. The final volume's brevity adds to the disappointment, suggesting that the manga may have been axed or cancelled prematurely. As a result, the author resorts to time skips to tie up loose ends and deliver a rushed conclusion.

On a positive note, the visual aspect of Promise Cinderella is a notable highlight. The manga's artwork is vibrant, detailed, and the character designs were visually appealing. The illustrations effectively convey the characters' emotions, capturing their struggles and joys with finesse.

Promise Cinderella excels in crafting well-rounded characters, tackling social issues, and showcasing captivating artwork. The growth of Hayame and Issei throughout the series provides emotional depth, and their shared experiences resonate with readers on a profound level. However, the manga falters in its execution due to an excess of unnecessary drama and antagonistic characters. The rushed ending further diminishes the impact by leaving crucial plot points unresolved, relying on hope and wishful thinking rather than providing concrete resolutions. Additionally, the brevity of the final volume suggests a possible cancellation or premature conclusion, resulting in a reliance on time skips. Despite these shortcomings, Promise Cinderella manages to be an above-average romantic dramedy, reminding readers of the importance of personal growth and human connections, while leaving room for improvement in its narrative execution.

Not a realistic relationship or situation.

I can't see why a 27-30 year-old would fall in love with a 17 Year old. I mean sure he'll turn 18 but it doesn't change that fact. Some would use the word pedophile but I've heard over and over again that's not the correct term. Whatever the proper term is it's exactly that. If the female lead was 18-20 it would be more understandable because that's barely an adult but her falling for him would make more sense.

Now I'm not saying fiction isn't allowed to be fiction but it's too odd when so much pressure is put on a adult that depends solely on a teenagers kindness and it turns into affection out of desperation? The author could have at least made him 18 already when she did fall for him. Otherwise it's a bit creepy.
I don't think it's taken seriously because he's a guy but had it been the other way around.

Over all the story is pretty good if you like drama.
I guess you could ignore their relationship a bit here and there. It's only saving grace is that the female lead never forces herself on the male lead and is actually willing to wait. Can't say the same for male lead though . He wants her as soon as possible.
Also despite starting out with a trash personality, in a tsundere kind of way. We learn that he is nicer than he wants to admit and just gives in to that part of himself but he still keeps his snarky side.

It's getting repetitive

I loved the early Female Lead divorce and Male Lead discovering his friends were shitty arcs, but it started to get super annoying on the Obsessive Woman From Highschool arc. It was way too dramatic and exaggerated, with the
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
kidnaps and pushing FL off the cliff. The obsessive woman being the "homewrecker" was quite interesting, though.
It is manga after all, but not gonna lie, I expected a more realistic story.

As if having all kinds of people in FL and Second Male Lead's lives disrupting FL and Male Lead's relationship not enough, comes another rich, self-centered, narcissistic dude with super questionable approach.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Such as kissing suddenly **without consent** and overall being an asshole. Chasing after FL because "she's different" and ask all kinds of people to... spy on her at work? I don't know anymore.
Classic shoujo/josei romance manga trope... which should stop already to be quite honest.

I don't know if I can handle another rich dude falling in love with the FL. And handling it poorly and NOT endearingly.

Was able to buy the first 5 volumes translated in English for the Singapore/SEA market! The premise of this series is a bit unbelievable/intense/unrealistic, but it gets so amazing from there. I love alllll the characters (except for maybe 2 shady ones later on?) hahaha
The art is also just beautiful from the detail in facial expressions to Issei's casual but cool fashion. There is a TON of character development. Cheering you on, Issei :3
As a note I am not bothered by age gaps in fiction. That is probably still a turn-off for some but I'd recommend giving this one a chance!

the age gap DOES work

If you have liked Shiwasu Yukis "Takane to Hana", you'll also like this one and vice versa. Contrary to what a few commentators said, the age gap works because the FL is almost as immature as the ML. They both grow with each other though and their chemistry is perfect honestly. The story itself is pretty interesting but a few too many dramatic arcs. The author doesn't leave any loose threads though so it resolves nicely.

TW pedophilia and grooming
by FANGURL999
April 10th, 2024, 1:23am
Rating: 1.0  / 10.0
Honestly it couldn't keep my attention, I felt like I was forcing myself to read. Not liking how ml is still a minor and the author seems to start the romantic developments already, but I'll give it a benefit of doubt. Might come back later to give a proper rating.
.
EDIT; Nvrmnd, fck you guys who think this isn't pedo attitude and fck this story. Mangas and their fcking obsession with romanticizing pedophilia and grooming. Ml is a child and he also behaves like a child understandably. Immature and bratty, typical of a rich kid. But why is the female lead also acting like a child. She's nearing her 30s, where is her maturity? And oh also morals, because she literally falls in love with a 17 year old, a minor boy. Don't you dare tell me that a 30 year old falling in love with a 17 year old isn't creepy cuz it is. Heck, if he's under 20, it's still creepy because you know why? You know why kids tend to fall in love with ppl older than them? Because maturity is attractive, not the other way around. And not that bullshit talk about hE's ALmosT aN adULt, shut the fuk up. Even at 18 years old, there's something so creepy and predatory about a literal almost 30 year old falling for someone younger than 20.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And literally, the grandma was like "Hey you can leave, that boy was being bratty, no need to pay it back" BTCH WHY DIDN'T YOU LEAVE???? Even after she got that FRICKING JOB, and grandma was on her side??? She just stuck around like a dumbass. Also, why is it that Issei needed to go play knight-in-shining-armour when the fl went to sign divorce papers?
. The worst part is because this is from Hayame's pov, she's not seen as predatory as the other pedophilic mangas out there because the author is romanticizing a predator's pov. Whereas, usually in pedophilic mangas the mc is the fl who is the under-aged one, so it's from the victim's pov. It's so fcking gross because both the ml and fl's maturity levels are basically the same (cuz they're both fcking immature) and ml has the upper hand, so it actually makes this seem like an ok thing, when it clearly is not. Also common sense WHO?? Even without bringing up the pedophilia, this story is a shitshow, with THE most boring and cliche plot.

aahhhhhh the beginning was actually VERY VERY gripping (and the side stories were super cute) 10/10. but....

well, after a while, there too many dramas, worries, misunderstandings (which is not my cup of tea); And too many ...guys
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
(ok, so we have issei's brother, i think thats enough, but ugh, some random rich, handsome, orange haired guy appeared... and i was like, okay,...). (and also, every handsome guy in the series (except for the 35 uncle) is into our female lead.......... ==" - sometimes it feels like the author buffs her too much, which is a little cringey).
In short, i feel like the series lost its beginning uniqueness and dynamic --- it falls into the cliché of "a tsundere pursuing an older lady with a past"

The most interesting character, also whom i like the best, is that crazy woman who obsessed with the older brother.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
she started out as a likeable fangirl for hayame and the older brother, but somehow turns unhealthily obsessive over him
i think she's terrible as a person but is unique as a character. the story of her and female lead's ex husband makes me think twice... for one minute, i even sympathize with the ex husband - "cheating is not as bad as killing someone, right?" i hope they can get their shit together in their next life haha.

also, i ship the 35 year old uncle with the cute lady tooooo- their characters are witty and full of amazement...

anyways, issei is cute. the dynamic in issei and hayame's relationship is amazing and lovely. wish they end up happily soon. also, i like issei's friend too haha.

although this not really fits my cup of tea, this is a very very WELL WRITTEN series (good job author), you should read ittttt! Highly reccomended!!

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
more ranting:
i just don't understand why shoujo mangas male leads HAVE to be some handsome dude who acts like a jerk, like refuse all of those girls rudely and we readers would think so highly of him; like, are you more worthy, cooler because you treasure your girl but treat other people around you like shit? NOO........... i mean saying "no, thanks" normally would make me feel like you're cooler...
