A very accurate and beautiful depiction of one's struggles...

I'm saying it's accurate and (tragically) beautiful because that's what it is. I think anyone who is, or goes through, some type of internal struggle -- especially in terms of anxiety, depression, mental health -- will be able to relate strongly. I don't think I've ever seen any other author or series who's been able to address it so well... Definitely leaves you with a lot to think about.

A heart-touching metaphor about depression

Another masterpiece from Ha Ilkwon.

This webtoon caught me in the feels right as I was going through a rough patch. The thing that kept me going this past month was how the author portrayed the MC’s depression. The imagery of the steep hill that the MC struggles to climb just to go to school today and the piercing pain of unknown darkness that just seemingly out of nowhere consumes the MC whole made me cry because it felt like the author knew how hard it is to just try to be a normal person everyday when you’re struggling with challenges that nobody else can see.

The characters are very plain, but that just adds to their charm of being real people who are going through hard times. Their dialogue is awkward, which just helps build their characters as young teens trying to figure out how to survive in the life handed to them.

This is a 10

I think the people who rated this series so low either 1) don't understand art, or anxiety/depression, or 2) don't like the abstract concept of the black stuff, or 3) haven't finished the series yet.

If you don't understand the art or anxiety/depression, then I have nothing to say. But if you didn't get what the black goo is about, then let me tell you that this story is NOT fantasy and that surreal stuff does get addressed at the end. If you haven't finished the webtoon -- seriously, there are only 26 chapters! That's nothing! Sure, it's on daily pass, but please don't let that stop you. I fast passed towards the end and I have no regrets.

One key thing everyone should know is that Ha Ilkwon is an amazing, funny, yet "deep" author. I've read all his available works on Webtoon, and I wish they'd translate the rest of his stories too. Every single story he's written is so beautiful and so, so meaningful. Beware of how depressing Duty After School is though... Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Anyway, I couldn't get over this story when I finished it, and I had to pour out my feelings somehow. This story, like all of the other stories by this author, will make you ... feel.
