Description
Sotoba is an old-fashioned Japanese village nestled deep in the mountains. It has a small population of about 1300, and the villagers strictly follow age-old traditions and customs. One sweltering summer, a mysterious and deadly disease begins to spread rapidly among the villagers, affecting young and old alike. In the midst of this spate of puzzling deaths, a family of beautiful and elegant individuals moves into the abandoned 'Kanemasa' mansion on the hill-side over-looking Sotoba.

the plot, art was good enough for me. I hate all character especially Natsuno Yuuki and that pink hair girl (forgot her name) with an exception for sunako and seishin. the ending actually not bad and it makes me quite satisfied.

Soooo stupid...how can it be

Omgosh, i felt that the characters are so stupid I just had to comment... I can't believe how stupid all of them are. i am so glad other people agreed with this point, i'm not just imagining that everyone in this story has no common sense.

With the knowledge they had, it is just unbelievable that they acted like floating ducks waiting to be picked... like yeah, I know how to be immune, but I'll just let my dad throw all my weapons and defense away, and then I will somehow forget everything about the danger and run around defenseless at night.

howwww stupiddddd... everyone. and knowing how dangerous those vampires are but just stand there talking crap while they are about to bite you. duh, serves you right to be bitten. probably better as food than to waste precious air on earth.

it is like every single person in this anime just didn't try to use their brains past the 0.4% threshold. yeah they find out how to protect themselves, but they would just give up protecting themselves when they are ACTUALLY in danger! yeah they know that so and so are attacking you, and they just passively wait around until night time - no wait - they just GO TO SLEEP at night. I started to understand why the music is so creepy in the anime to complement this manga - it is to make it even more scary that humans can portray humans as being so friggin stupid.

Interesting premise, but extremely stupid characters

The premise of the story Is intriguing and rather refreshing. The story has a certain draw to it that kept me reading chapter after chapter. Unfortunately, the characters destroy any suspension of disbelief I had. It’s been a while since I’ve encountered such an entirely retarded cast of characters. I feel the story could have ended in 10 chapters if only the characters had a minimal IQ of 80. The characters are rather bland with limited development, but not completely uninteresting. For example, the bond between Natsuno and Tooru was fun to read about. It’s a tragedy that it wasn’t further explored though. So many characters were introduced, then killed off without elaboration that 95% o f the cast was forgettable. The main characters suffer an overabundance of tropes and lack depth. The art is passable, but won’t win any awards/ At times, the characters’ bodies are so elongated that you wonder if the artist drew this while laying down. Overall the manga felt shallow and predictable with a dew redeeming qualities. 5.5/10

Troubled

This series has penty of hits and plenty of misses till the end.
The art is absolutely horrible, that combined with a very slow beggining and the introduction of awful characters made me almost drop this series.
But i decided to continue and it didn't turn out so bad, the art became secondary to the plot.
Plot wise it turned out average when considering everything. It's deep, it has some interesting takes on an old subject matter, but at the same time suffers from drifting to pointless subplots. One major flaw was trying to justify the shiki point of view: the mangaka tried to turn them into villains only to reconsider and almost make them into the heroes. How can that be possible? I sure as hell didn't fall into such a nonsensical plot device, the justifications in the final chapters were plain absurd. One major greatness combined with a flaw was the somewhat realistic plot progression: you can't possibly expect the characters to know what is going on at first and i give kudos to the mangaka for that, but at the same time the plot evolved too slowly considering the events that transpired and a mass paranoia would have been fitting in some characters near the middle. The characters were just waltzing around seemingly oblivious to their surroundings and the events. I'm glad something did happen and the story raced to the end, it developed into quite a page turner.
The main dillema is not difficult to understand but the options available seem pretty shallow and not well thought out. Discussing survival and such themes i could think of several options on the spot, there is no way that one party (i don't want to spoil) could have a case in the trouble of the manga. It was completely surreal and one of the reasons i despised them.
Also i wish the series could have been longer and discussed more themes.
As for the characters i'm also troubled. On one hand you have some nice characters going on: the doctor developed nicely, so did many others. There were actually some interesting stories and backgrounds told by them and i was actually compelled by them. But again at the same time there are also some horrible characters including Megumi, Masao, the young priest and Sunako (?). How can i feel for those characters? Masao was one of the most disgusting, pointless and stupid characters i have seen in manga. Megumi was annoying, shallow and just terrible. The young priest is actually the character i hate the most, coming up with some horrid reasons and decisions. I mean really? That's how he was? Also with the biblical references that didn't do much for me. And lets not forget Sunako. I'm lost at words.
Another interesting point is how some characters seemed to break their mold in the final chapter. Despite everything Giant Ookawa still rocks as a badass character.
Overall this manga has some interesting points, i like these kinds of stories, mysteries in small towns, so yeah that was a big plus, it was deep, it introduced plenty of interesting moments, so i give it a higher grade and choose to forget most of the bad things. And that includes the ending: for me that was very rage inducing, just thinking about it makes me feel mad.

Not bad.

I watched the Anime. The plot, the atmosphere, the characters progression are good. I find the art absolutely hideous, but that's just my opinion, and it doesn't hinder the immersion nor the atmosphere (by which I mean there are still damn creepy moments... The blue-haired cat-boy anyone? This guy creeped the living sh*t out of me...)

-First, there is a lot of very classic stuff and drama (such as Muroi (the priest)/Sunako philosophical debates on shiki/human relations) which were to be expected. So nothing really good nor bad here.

-There is also some very annoying points, such as for instance, well Masao, just Masao, completely plot-useless character, and that you already want to shoot right in the head the first time he even opens his friggin mouth. Another incredibly hateful (and hated) character is Megumi (pink-haired girl) but she is actually relevant in the plot, so there is at least a reason for her presence, though I admit I wished she died in horrible suffering pretty much from episode 1.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
and that's what she ends up doing by the way. Hurray! Sorry, but that was my genuine reaction to the -somewhat gruesome- scene...

-And then, there are very interesting points, which include :
Dr. Toshio. (somewhat of the hero, along with Yuuki and maybe Muroi+Sunako) He is a very interesting character, especially his
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
HUGE WTF moment with his wife (really unexpected, I mean he is kinda supposed to be the hero, and then WTF WTF WTF ! mad scientist/torture/psychopath moment.) and also the xanatos gambit he pulls out with Yuuki at the end is well thought.

Yuuki's decisions and convictions.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There are 2 POV, roughly, in hte story : 1)Dr Toshio->extermination of the shiki. 2)Muroi->Cohabitation human/shiki, which then evolves in : all the humans die, and the shiki remain.
So, in the end, there is TEAM HUMAN and TEAM SHIKI.
What's interesting is that Yuuki, though he has been turned, and though he helps team human, doesn't really belong TO EITHER.
And IF the shiki hadn't been such jerks at the beginning (since it's implied that shikis can survive by feeding on humans without killing nor turning them), Yuuki would very likely have proned cohabitation.
He's just in complete disagreement with THOSE PARTICULAR SHIKIS' methods, plus, he considers himself already dead, hence his quest as some sort of "borrowed time righter of wrongs", sort of...

Also, the end, with
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
our witnessing of the lenghts the 'humans' are prepared to go to->leading to complete and methodical extermination of their former friends and family. Quite interesting to watch. Gory as well.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot, but the whole HOYAY thing between Yuuki and Tohru was a big plus for me. ^^

I like it. And I like the art too, it's original and maybe some things are drawn strangely but for me what is important in a good drawing is that it transmits feelings. There are lots of mangas with cute characters, yes, but their expressions are plain. This one, though, transmits emotions, you can feel the tension of the moment. That's the most important thing in a manga.

bad art...

The art is really bad and drawn unproportionally, the artist doesnt know how to draw people at different angles because their eyes and arms get all messed up and the art is just kind of bad and weird.

i guess the story is okay if you can get past the art, but a lot of the panels seem contrived and drawn just to look cool like other action manga i know. i just can't get past the art.

Beautiful tradgedy!

This story... this story... I just loved it! It's such a great, well thought out, well planned, well characterized and thought provoking manga and thoroughly had me just chilled at everything presented in the manga. It makes me wonder why anyone would want to read about certain silly sparkly vampires when you could read about these vampires exist!

Plot- The plot is dark. Especially as the story progresses. The story revolves primarily around one sole fight, against the people of a village and the vampires who want to turn the village into a vampire haven. From the beginning the plot was extremely well paced, not slow but not to quick either. As the story continues it only gets better, as morals and ideals are pulled into question and you begin to wonder who exactly is the 'villains' and who you should be rooting for. The plot in itself is a good one, creepy enough to give you chills, interesting enough to keep you wanting to see what happens next, heart warming enough that it's not just one big blood fest, and pace in such a great way that it keeps everything moving smoothly from the start of the start of the summer to its climax!

Characters- I applauded the author for keeping track of all the characters... seriously there were tons of characters, all well developed and each with their own unique traits. There are three main characters from whose prospective the story is told from, with at times the story being told from the perspective of the secondary characters. This works well and helps you understand the motives of the characters who are leading the story as each different character has a different set of ideals and morals that cause that character to choose different paths. Each character is so well thought out, and all their actions so believable and realistic, it was wonderful to see how they changed and what way they went during the course of the story! There are sure to be characters you just love and others that you can't stand, adding to the unique village life the story is set during.

Art- The art is beautiful, and at times very creepy, eerie and slightly disturbing. Only qualm... what's with the hair? Some hair styles are just... impossibly crazy... though that's not really a complaint as sometimes the hair styles added to the character, complimented the character's personality and some just made the character look cool/pretty... still, it was a little strange, but maybe that just fit the story?

Other: This manga really is a tragedy; so much stuff happens during it that my emotions were always swinging. This story grabbed me so firmly and rattled me up; leaving me feelings a little hollow as it jerked about my emotions is such a way. That sound bad? Well it's not! This story was an amazing tragedy that you MUST READ! The only reason I give it a 9 instead of a 10 is because the ending got a little to fast paced, though everything leading up to it were so well paced. The last couple chapters I wish I could have seen some more scenes but… maybe that’s just selfish…

9/10 - Was great

I've read so many vampire stories but this one is interesting. I am so intrigued to Natsuno's idea of leaving his life like that. Hmmmm.. I guess he would be a vampire hunter or something. hehehehe

I like this manga (though anime give me little shock). Story is actually realistic, and even there are MANY minor character... well, I just ignore them and focus on those main. Even though I don't really liked Natsuno because his character, I can understand him. Because being shipped into some unknown vilage with naive and gossiping people... it would piss me too.
Story is little slow but it getting better and better as chapters goes. Doctor Toshio starting act somehow scary and creepy, but still trying save people. Only one I don't really like is probably priest Seishin... he know there are vampires, but don't give damn.

But my favorite character is Tatsumi. Since even when he acted all cute and harmlessly, it was obvious he's most dangerous one...
