Less annoying and more solid

PROGRESS : 53 Chapters (Ongoing)

This is the series of Rumiko that I'm willing to hold on to. I couldn't bring myself to fully liking Inuyasha like others did. If it's not for the romance full of melodrama that gave me a hard time to swallow or the stubborness of the lead characters that lead me to headaches. The cliches-ness won't go far to each other actually, but Mao was more well-thought of and solid.

Mao was a mixed up of Sesshoumaru personality wise. I truly feel relieved that we don't get another stupid, reckless ML to accompany us along the journey. And Nanoka was a good fit to him as a partner who suffers the same fate.

Thinking the idea of Rumiko addicted to working on about two poor souls across another dimension again is a problem. Thankfully, so far, she did the justice to make Mao as interesting as possible. The story took a setting in Taishou era, thus made this Orihime-Tanabata concept sounded more romantic.

I also like the way Rumiko put Mao and Nanoka into bounding, unseparable condition. There was really a little of unnecessary thing for Nanoka to hate Mao without clear reasons just like what Kagome did towards Inuyasha. It's like Nanoka know her positions so be it Mao (like that bussiness relationship?). Anyways, I won't talk much about their romantic development because it's just started as per I wrote this review. I'm not sure I can handle this

long past lovers even though it's a one-sided feelings from Mao himself and soon-to-be suffering Nanoka
.

I feel like the story is actually moving forwards but also slow at the same time. We already come this far but like they still on the same spot: the first incident happened at that certain town and always be until the pieces of myseries solved. Maybe because their world is small to begin with. It's so Rumiko-like without prolonging the conflicts any longer, a good material if it's adapted into anime someday with less filler.

Other characters (remarkable and favorable enough) made an appearance and became their, literally speaking, an allies (more like individual purposes). The main conflict revolves around the intrigue between clan members' need and their long history which is not new. Inuyasha had more wider range so it won over Mao in this aspect. But despite that, there are room to improve. We'll know it sooner so expect we can go deeper but not out of the rails.

It's less annoying, less noisy, believe me. Every chapter like a surprise to me, if it's not by far my favorites series of her.

I admit her art style is very retro even after all the years so I can't really judge too much.

The setting is very plain and MC is able to fight which is always nice. So far nothing grabs me by the intro other than I hope it won't be 40+ vol.
