concerning identity and the things we do to survive

Both Ashen's and transbike's reviews are worth reading. This manga was gripping, tragic, but interesting and unlike the usual gender-bender. Typically the body swap is played for "I'm not gay but I have to date a GUY now!?" laughs, whereas in this, it was an uncomfortable, deceptive lie that a gay person had to live in order to be with the person he loved. Both main characters acted selfish out of desperation, not egotism, in my opinion. I can understand disliking either of them because both of them behave questionably, but it's their mistakes and painful self-interest that make them feel more real than perfectly 'good' protagonists.

Despite the magic elements, the way people acted (for the most part) felt very realistic. It wasn't mystically accepting and idealised, it was the unfair world that we live in, where sometimes people just aren't compatible, no matter how you try to face it. Homophobia is as real in this manga as it is in our world, and it's not pretty. It's not dissipated through tolerance and sudden gayening of the straight people like in a yaoi manga.

I'm surprised this was a shounen, honestly. The consideration for the gay character and the resolutions both felt unlike the demographic as a whole.

Ren (the boy) could be annoying and self-centred at times, but if you're LGBT, you can probably relate to the desire to just do something, even if it requires denying yourself your identity. The hook of this is manga, however, is that it requires denying someone else's identity, too. Can you sacrifice the Self of both you and your dear friend in order to love freely? And if you can, how dear is that friend to you, really?

Likewise, can you deny your love's Self and happiness just because you want them? Do you really think you can change something as fundamental as a person's sexuality? Do you even care about their sexuality, or do you care about having them to yourself?

It's not a fun story necessarily, but it's one that kept me hooked. It's short and free to read, so it's worth a shot if you're up for a good, frustrating, compelling drama.

Codependency

This is not your typical body swap manga. This is a focused story using body swapping as a vehicle for the pitfalls of codependency and putting someone else's happiness on a pedestal. It's not a happy story, but also not a tragedy. I think this manga does a commendable job at illustrating the frustration and desperation of trying to make something work by (quite literally) becoming someone else, while losing your own identity and your own happiness in the process.

I especially appreciated the ending of this manga, it is worth reading.

Unlikable Male Lead

This was not a relaxing feel-good story. Fortunately, it was short. I really didn't like the male lead - talk about selfish. At least the female lead had plenty of character growth by the end. This was well written - it just wasn't for me.

A Body Swap Story With More Grit (And Drama) Than I'd Ever Expected!

I started this series with only a vague interest and its drama and stakes hit me like a one-two punch to the neck; I was hooked and binged the whole thing in a few nights. It was fantastically twisted, surprising, dramatic, and emotionally raw, and it even left me with a hopeful feeling.

I loved that the male MC's sexuality is given consideration and isn't 100% vilified or perfectly okay by everyone. There is a believable balance which is all too rare in fiction sometimes. The anxieties and issues Hina deals with, meanwhile, were equally heart-wrenching and carefully layered.

It's fucked up

The relationship between the two main characters is really twisted. One (A) hurts the other (B) knowingly and is miserable because of how much the other one (B) deteriorates. The other wants to be used and not out of a masochist desire.

The spoiler tag contains a major spoiler of the first chapter

Hina and Ren (the two main characters) are childhood friends who can swap bodies (or mind(?)) by linking fingers and saying "Change." Hina is bullied heavily by some of her classmates and the rest don't do anything out of fear of being bullied themselves. Ren doesn't do anything either due to reasons explained at around chap. 10.
Ren is gay and confessed to the guy he loves, thinking he will accept him... which doesn't happen. Hina finds Ren in the library and they talks and Ren forcefully swaps bodies with her... and the fucked up thing is, he goes to the guy he loves as Hina, tells him he loves him and sleeps with him... he lost Hina's virginity in an emotional outburst... this was just the first episode and I already wanted to stop reading.
As Hina loves Ren, she forgives him and allows him to use her body to date the guy he loves and slowly but surely, she becomes utterly miserable. She wanted to kill herself at some point and got "stopped" by a woman who slept with her in Ren's body.

In short, this is a manga about people emotionally hurting each other, because one is scared of becoming an outcast after saying he is gay and the other one can't stand for herself and thinks the only way to be close to the one she loves is to have him use her...
