Tragic Ending
by Onism
May 4th, 2024, 3:36am
Rating: N/A
Starts of as a pure story of romance between a village girl ostracised as a witch and an heir of a famous military house but becomes more complicated and sad as more information is revealed with the introduction of Kaidel‘s adopted mother, her life, goals and values.

This not a story of the hero and heroine killing/imprisoning/reforming the villain and living happily ever after until their deaths.

+ Morally grey characters
In particular Kaidel‘s adopted mother. The source of their discourse (and the majority of the plot) becomes about her ‘means to an end’ method of achieving her goal of equality. For example, raising and manipulating a child as a tool to control someone else (grooming), whipping her staff as disciple, erasing memories of her allies to make sure they don’t leave, threatening life of her adopted child to blackmail another, etc.

+ Tragic ending
stop at chapter 130 for happy/ nostalgic/ bittersweet ending.

+ Age gap
Eleanor is immortal and therefore doesn’t age. When the two love interests initially meet (in flashback. Revealed later) Eleanor is a child (age not specified but she can already speak, read, write for years) and watched Kaidel grow up. They later enter a romantic relationship.

+ Slow plot
The plot twists and psychological drama/tragedy of it only really begin at season 2.

*Grooming: “when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them”

TW: grooming*, death, murder, violence, blood, suicide ideation, toxic relationships, parental death, parental abuse, mention of substance abuse, physical abuse (including by a parental figure and as a method of discipline), slavery, attempted suicide, parental abandonment, manipulation of a child, false accusations and executions of witchcraft, psychological abuse

I'm someone who's put off by age gaps where the romanticization of grooming occurs, but that was honestly the least messed up thing about their relationship considering neither of them remembered each other when they met again. On top of Eleanor dying and reviving for four years straight making her mental age around the same as his. It's a questionable choice yes, but it didn't make me feel as conflicted as the ending did lol

The author warned us that it wouldn't end well and watching it go from bittersweet to an outright tragedy was something. Sometimes you just want to read something and go "wow that's messed up."

I enjoyed the plot twists and am tempted to reread it to catch tiny things I missed, but those epilogue chapters made my heart shrivel up a bit.

The story is starts off slow. It picks up a little by ch 20, but I just can't bring myself to finish it. Not a fan of the main leads. If the second male lead wasn't so ruthless, I'd find him a much more likeable and interesting character.

It *was* awesome until the side stories

Just finished reading it and I am still very traumatized because of the two side story chapters. Overall, I loved reading it and I was so immersed in this story. If I'm gonna describe the experience, I'd say it's one hell of a rollercoaster ride. Moreover, like the others said, there are a bunch of twists around the end of season 2, and also around season 3. I think it was around chapter 50 to 70 when I couldn't even bring myself to feel excited from the romance because I can't help but feel anxious of the ominous foreshadowing.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Basically, I couldn't help but feel anxious of Kaidel because after he found out about what really happened during his childhood and how Eleanor is related to it, he acted the same on the outside but he was struggling with his emotions on the inside. He even mentioned to Eleanor how it would be easy if he could sort out his feelings into just black and white. The reason why I was feeling anxious is because he would occasionally do some unsettling stares at Eleanor and his point of view wasn't shown that much. It's really hard to describe.

Anyway, I think everything was settled and they had a happy and satisfying (for me) ending until the side stories happened.

(Ending spoilers ahead!!!)
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
After everything was resolved, Kaidel surrendered the Hadesreign family name and left with Eleanor. They started living together in their hometown (the place where the fire happened) and they even got married with just the two of them as the attendees. As time went on, everything was fine and they were happy until the problem came. Kaidel aged and Eleanor stayed the same. However, before Kaidel died, he went back to visit Count Hadesreign (now emperor) and the Eternal Sleep reagent was returned to him. He mentioned the following words in a letter that Eleanor found alongside the reagent (gonna quote the whole letter contents since I recommend reading from start to finish T_T):
"My beloved Eleanor, I'm sure you'll be surprised to find this letter and reagent. Just imagining your surprised expression is so lovely. There's something I didn't get to tell you, so I've prepared a surprise gift. Eleanor, to me, the time I spent with you is incomparable to anything else. They were a succession of shining moments. We shared so much happiness and also sadness. The snow fell, and new plants sprouted. We were able to see it all dozens of times. And like that, time continued to pass. Whenever that time approached, you suffered so greatly... that my own heart felt like it was falling to pieces. So that's why... I'm leaving this letter alongside the reagent for eternal sleep.

How did I find this reagent? There's something I didn't tell you. To be honest, a while ago, I went to see the count. No, I should call her... the emperor. I mentioned the reagent, and the emperor returned the reagent that had been in the possession of the demon. And I also saw a familiar face. It was our first meeting in decades, so I was nervous. But it was comforting to see them doing well.

That was how I got my hands on the reagent, but the reason I didn't tell you... was because I wished that you wouldn't drink it after my death. The world is too vast... for you to take this reagent willingly. I wanted you to experience this bittersweet but beautiful world... over... and over, so that you could become stronger. Of course, I'm not asking you to continue a never-ending journey. But I want you to use this reagent, not as a means to forget your sadness, but once you have nothing more to wish for in this world. Eleanor, my love. I pray that you will make it through the pain."

I can't T_T I'm crying buckets as I typed it all out. In the end, Eleanor drank the reagent and fell into an eternal sleep. I was happy, sad, and satisfied with that ending already. Until Noah happened. I'm gonna shorten it as much as possible. What happened was, Noah woke Eleanor up but she's kind of like in a vegetative state. Basically, she's awake but she didn't respond to anything that Noah did. Noah even tried kissing her but there was still no response. It happened for years until Noah ended up pretending to be Kaidel, which brought light to Eleanor's eyes. I'm gonna stop here and I don't want to describe it further because it was so unsettling.

P.S. I should've heeded the disclaimer warning at the beginning of the side stories. "To those who wanted a happy ending, I ask that you close the book right now." Too late for regrets T_T

Too similar

I made it through the first season, but the entire time I was reading it just felt like I was reading a child-friendly version of "The Pale Horse."
The author probably didn't do it on purpose, similarities happen sometimes. But I just much prefer Rose, Pierre and Lemon to Eleanor, Caidel and that vampire dude who's name I forgot, so I kept comparing the material and honestly, it just made me want to re-read the Pale Horse. the characters in this are of Shoujo-clichees. The art is nice but nothing special the plot is just not original enough to keep me on the hook.

big hint in season 2 that their relationship is based on grooming. Eleanor looked after a kid that looked totally similar like Kaidel since birth. Haha what's with manhwas nowadays that always push romance element based from grooming.

First 10 chapters or so are slow. And the pace doesn't really improve until the 35th chapter or so.
But around the end of season 1 there's a good twist. And man, the 2nd season opens up a WHOLE new level of plot twist. Everyone's kind of had a vague guess about it wayyy back from the prologue, but the way the author delivered the twist, I gotta say "exceptional".

How is such a fantastic series so underrated

Only on chapter 45, but wow I'm so immersed in this story. The two main characters are both mysterious, gorgeous, and adorable. Both are obviously burdened by their dark pasts, and somehow found solace in each other. There are also quite a few twists in this story--in general, I'm just loving this!

The story dips into topics on immortality, witchcraft, repentance, prejudice, and so much more.

Art: 10/10 The art is incredible and breathtaking, almost on the level of DICE
Plot: 9/10 The mystery keeps the readers reading, and everything is paced pretty well
Characters: 8/10 We've got a hot vampiric yandere, a wholesome cute puppy-like knight, and an adorable fluffy misunderstood FL

All in all, i can't wait to see more of this series and find out how everything unravels.
