Description
Connie, the daughter to a Viscount whose only value is her honesty, and Scarlet Castiel, the most reviled villainess of the era who was sentenced to death ten years ago. When the two people who were never supposed to meet encountered one another at a night party, the story that should have ended with Scarlet's death began anew.

Although their relationship only began out of mutual interest, they soon became true partners in an effort to unravel the mysteries of a grand conspiracy borne out of the past, that still has a vicious grip on the present.

If you are scouring for a good isekai or villainess story like I did a while ago, this might not be the genre but definitely goes smooth into your taste. Possibly, it is one of the best period drama mangas I've read in recent years.

At first, I started with only 2 chapters. So I stalled only to came back today and read through a whole 17 episodes that are currently available. Hats off to the writers for the tight storylines, character buildings and developments, sweet plot twists with a blend of societal reflections and strong modern ideals.

I especially enjoy the main characters thus far. Firstly, the meek Viscount daughter Connie who continues to learn and up keep her goodwill and good heart. Secondly, the presumed villainess who turned out to be an outspoken, no nonsense Ducal lady that is intelligent, full of knowledge and a bit of a tsundere Scarlet. If we consider Count Randolph as well, he plays well his stoic but caring persona who promises plenty of further involvements than meet-the-eyes. And goodness, all the other characters. I chef kiss the writer AND the artists for bringing them to life on pages. They are so individualistic. (Albeit I was confused because a couple of minor character designs were quite similar - but turned out to be no big deal).

Each chapter is filled with mysteries. When one is somewhat solved, the others showed up in a chain of events that are cohesive and rational. It doesn't keep you at the edge (which can be nice), but leave you invested and wanting more. So, for now, I think I will take a little break from this (months) to gather a good compilation before diving back in. I can, because of how mature, thoughtful and how elaborated this work is.

By all means, I can kind of guess the ending. But sometimes it's not that that we are chasing but the execution, the storyline, and the dark and bright spots here and there along the journey, yes?

A final note that might not be relevant: if you are also like me fed up of isekai, villain/villainess mangas that irk because of the reinstatement of the establishment, the OP misunderstood main characters who were bad or mistreated yet given a chance to be the perfect versions of themselves or see the happy endings they deemed to have deserved, or the expositions, and seriously those "I'm seriously better, of higher class, know how to deal with things, and perfect in every way" -- take this remedy. I root for the underdogs, the vulnerables and yearn for their growths through struggles they learn and never stop making mistakes. (Well, this does not necessary apply to the characters here since they are nobles - I squint. At the same time, I'm not sure if I'm to judge because I'm not in their situation and this story revolves well around them? Ok, I'm reading way into it. Let's stop just here.)

In sum, I never had a shed of interest in reading Japanese light novel or novel. But I might with this one. It's really good!

Happy reading guys!
