Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There are some major problems with this manga
1.TEXT there is so much text that it is like reading spawn or other awful american comics that was inspired by Chris Claremonts constant need to explain and tell everything in text instead of letting the artist do part of the job
2.Gon omg he is so annoying and easygoing up untill his friend "dies" then he turns into a hulk monster that will kill innocent bystanders and basically becomes an asshole to all his friends
3.so many characters get whole chapters dedicated to them that are just awful and uninteresting
same with explaning diffrent forms of Qi/chi/magic powers and diffrent stages of these said powers
that are then never mentioned again
4.there are basically 2 characters the readers like and want to read about Hisoka and Killua
and when we finally have more interesting characters like the King and Komugi they have to die by poison
the mangaka even brought back pointless characters like Kurapika and Leorio
thanks mangaka
i dont think there is 1fan of Leorio who wanted him back in this series
please kill him off the moment they set foot on the continent

okok
the art is also basically shit
it started out ok got weird and is basically shit now

Hunter x Hunter was like one of the first anime series that I watched. While I used to enjoy any anime, HxH has held me captivated by both the steady and intense pace, which was accompanied by well composed background music (I'm talking about the old version anime)..

I admit that I didn't read the manga, so I was literary surprised of how bad the art was (around chimera arc), but it gets better afterwards. I can't deny that the idea of the story is strong. The characters are great, their interactions are very natural. The pace is steady, each battle and fight are well told and especially well explored strategically. Plot is nice too, as HxH doesn't rely on good-bad guy concept. It lets the reader decide on that matter.

I can't really recommend to read this considering the bad art (I didn't start from manga as well), I instead recommend you to take the anime. If you have felt love for it and want to know more/ learn it's origin, you can then pick up this series and start to shape your patience to wait for the end of hiatus.

Man this is an amazing series. I was one of the later people to the game so i didnt know a lot about this but thanks to the 2011 anime i finally saw what i was missing man this was a great series. I love great action and adventure and especially when a series builds a whole new fantasy world with great abilities that are understandable and this series delivers. It was one of the few series that brought back the great feeling i had when first discovering DBZ or Naruto or Bleach and getting into it (before all the random bull of course). The story is great and refreshing and the mangas art might be bad at times (cause the author gets "sick" a lot) but it is made up for in the anime adaptation This series is a must read or much watch (considering the anime adaptation is way better imo) for any Shonen fan. However its a Huge Double edge sword so prepare for that cause the author will take you on the longest line wait of your life. IF you read any of these other more recent comments you know that this author busts Hiatuses so damn much. He even went in a long ass two year one, come back and did 9 chapters and went back recently.
Im soo pissed at the creator of this series. The whole situation is bull and if he really cant draw the whole thing himself then hire assistants and just draw or write the story board; but no he doesnt want that huh. At this point he has a responsibility to all his fans, editors and other producers that supported him and dedicated so much to his stuff so i just find him to be so fucked up how he treats it all, few ever get to his level and hes wasting it. I can understand him being sick but i feel like hes being stupid and stubborn as hell to not want to at least get help with his series so he can finish what he started and not put his fans through all this hiatus bull. I can promise you once he FINALLY finishes Hunter X Hunter, it will the last series i will EVER read from him. Im done with him and i hope he retires after Hunter x Hunter cause he doesnt deserve his fateful ass fans anymore. Its funny, i originally never watched the first anime or the manga but finally gave the 2011 anime version a chance (when i had nothing to do) and found out i was missing out on an amazing series; however little did i know this would be actually be a huge "double edged sword" on me cause now i have to endure all this crappy waiting like all his fans did and are still enduring. i dont regret watching/ reading HxH at all but but still i cant stand this author now.
And i wont give him another chance after this even though i know hes very talented, i mean very few authors can make one if not two great long running series; and he made two great series with this and Yuyu hakasho. So it does suck that i have to give up on this dude cause of his stubborn bull.

After reading Hunter x Hunter, I laugh when people say One Piece has weird or ugly art. HxH's art reaches a new level of strangeness, and half way through it just looks like the author stopped trying. Seriously, it looks like he spent 15 minutes doodling it out. What. The. Hell?

So, I watched the anime versions instead, which actually improved the manga!! The 1991? version expanded more on the characters, and the 2011 version follows the manga at a fast but steady pace. If not for the anime, I would have quit this manga a long time ago. No matter how good the story is (it's a masterpiece), THE ART HAS TO BE DECENT AT LEAST. I mean... come on. Togashi....Why do u do dis?

And secondly, the hiatus is way too long... and the new Dark Continent arc is kinda weird right now too...

Ha!
I was 9 when i watched the anime and fell in love!
What is Togashi's problem actually? His illness that makes this series turn into Hiatus X Hiatus?
Actually I do believe that if he didnt pause to draw this manga back then, and did it continuesly, it will be one of The Big 3 of Shonen Jump. It has the potential!

(give it 9 rating due to the slow progress...)

This manga hurts me like no other. It is one of the best stories on Shounen Jump, but the author seems to have trouble with consistency. The art swings between good and terrible, and the breaks come without a warning.

5+ months without an update? Why!!?

But the inconsistency of art and release aside, this is one hell of an adventure story. I've followed this story for probably 2 to 3 years now, and I still can't give up despite the author's hiatuses. I hope he becomes better at managing his schedule, lol.

Hunter x Hunter is the kind of works that appear from time to time. Somebody below stated that this manga is one for the ages. He’s right.

The plot seems rather simplistic: a boy looking for his father. In order to reach this goal he becomes a hunter, and this title is what connects him with the other characters. From this you would expect a fantastic adventure. And this adventure happens, just with a dark spin.
Togashi is a man that understood that the quality of a story doesn’t rely only in which or what tropes are used, but in how they are used. The term for the technique that Togashi uses is deconstruction. This is what allows Hunter x Hunter to give some astonishing twists and ideas. A pretty memorable example of this is how a character actually is disturbed after killing somebody. How many times have you seen that in a shonen?

In this story we have a varied main cast that can easily grip you into the story. Our main character, Gon, who is energetic boy looking for his father; Killua, a boy that comes from a family of assassins; Kurapika, a young man looking revenge; and Leorio who wants to become a doctor.
In fact, Hunter x Hunter has some of the strongest beginnings in shonen manga. But the development of the story is stronger. Hunter x Hunter follows an arc structure for the story. But every arc contribute to the plot and yet more. The most amazing thing is how these arcs aren’t repetitive. Even the storytelling varies from arc to arc.

Another amazing feature of this manga is the battles. They are all around well-crafted and breathtaking. The concept of Nen is perhaps the most creative, sophisticated, original and complex power source until this day in action manga.

The only notable flaw I have seen so far is the inconsistency of the art. Sometimes is well or sometimes is awful. Yet, Hunter x Hunter is, along with FMA, the most well written shonen so far. There’s no doubt about why Shonen Jump haven’t rejected Togashi despite all the pauses he takes.

Other thing that has bothered me is that sometimes the situations are a little bit tedious (Greed Island and certain parts of the Chimera Ant). But, the interesting situations and the amazing character development is what kept me going.

I really like what Togashi is attempting to do in shonen manga. And I will love if his work has influence in future works of future authors.

I would recommend this manga to anyone that is looking for an excellent story. If you can’t handle the art, you can watch both animes. But the 2011 version is the anime I would recommend the most since it is faithful to the source material.

The character development within the story is brilliantly written and realistically presented. I'm glad to have read this manga. Unfortunately, the art is a major drawback. As this is a manga, I can not excuse how lazy and sloppy the art is as a manga should be visually appealing in addition to having good characters and story. The pacing of the story is consistently good throughout the manga (with slight exception in the ant arc). I would recommend this to anyone.

I read this manga bcuz my friend said he'd pick up magi if I did HxH, and boy am I regretting doing this wager with him. the manga starts good, but a common reoccurring theme in this manga is : cool intro, great building, awesome climax, then a teeeeeeeerible ending with no satisfying conclusions. like every arc has a terrible ending, which is extremely annoying if you're a guy that likes satisfying closures and concrete conclusions within stories. the action is few and far between, and you'll have to go through a whole lot of jargon before you actually get to the good parts. and to make things worse these good parts are extremely short. maybe the fact that a lot of people harping about how great this manga is set lofty expectations that were never met, but this manga is average it best. way overrated. characters like killua n hisoka however keep it afloat, because if it was only gon and red eyes uchiha wannabe then gosh this manga would be a bore.

HunterxHunter is a very nice manga. The story was really lacking at first but it improves a lot after the hunter exams arc. My only problems is the art. When the story gets better, the characters' designs are sloppy and the background is pure white. It was obvious that the mangaka lost interest in the making of this manga and didn't want to draw anymore. It's really a shame cause the story is really interesting and it's definitely a must read.
