This manga starts off interesting. The story is unique and there are a lot of characters. It's a great manga to read if you're bored, at first...

As soon as you get to the Greed Island Arc (maybe around volume 15?), the story starts to DRAG on like there is no end. It seems like it's a filler arc. I kept reading just to see the result and man was I disappointed.

Then next came the Chimera Ant Arc, and it just ruined the manga. It has absolutely no relation to the main story. It's even more dragging than Greed Island! What's worse is that the ART COMPLETELY CHANGES. I'm not sure if the mangaka switched or he had some problems, but the art is ridculous. It's almost to the point where stick figures would be better.

I RECOMMEND, you read this manga ONLY until they enter Greed Island. If you read any further than that, you will be wasting your time and be sadly disappointed. Your outlook on this manga will be ruined if you read any further than that. If you don't believe me, just read the MU forums and see for yourself.

HxH is currently the best Shounen Jump manga out there. The characters in HxH actually _think_ and don't just do whatever they please, everything is carefully planned and explained and the flow of story is simply mind-blowing eg. the Gen'ei Ryodan arc is one of the best written arcs ever in manga history. Many people say they don't like the current Chimera Ant arc but I like it a lot. Although the King does look like a villain from DB. I am so happy that HxH will return in January, even if it was that usual ten chapters.

Without question this is one of the better mangas out there to read, enough said. Only annoyance is the authors need of over complacating everything. Almost any explanation of something has just too much information. Not that its done and thought out well, but alot of the info isnt nessarcy for the reader to know in such detail. After all its a manga not a novel. Otherwise though good stuff

Alright, regarding the other comments on this page I have my own to add to them. The main character is "undoubtedly" Gon. You did read the manga, right? Okay, just checking. There's so many subliminal meanings that can be deciphered from the ant arc that it's ridiculous. For instance, I'm pretty sure the chimera ant queen was created from a human mishap. This can be compared to the weapons like the atomic bombs, guns, etc that humans have crafted and have taken WAY more than 500,000 lives. Now the corrupt officials are making the hunter association take care of it. I don't like the unfair criticism against the Hunter x Hunter because the mangaka is sick. Due to the fact he's not able to develop the storyline, it becomes stagnant. Therefore, it too easy to create harsh criticism while no development in plot is occuring. Grant it the ant chapter will suck if he doesn't finish it well, but that goes for every manga, too. I believe this is a great chance for Gon's "limitless" potential to come forth or maybe even Ging will arrive to help. It's pretty awesome how the manga started so pure and innocent then turned into the dark reality of what the Hunter x Hunter world is truly like. I loooved the manga up until the arc about the monster things...I think it would've been better if the manga went in another direction but...yeah. The "King" looked so alike with one of the villians from Dragon Ball, he even had the tail o_o

the beginning of hunter x hunter is one of the best beginnings of any shonen manga that i have read. believe me, its like all i do. anyway, the best part was the yorkshin city arc. it had so many cool plot elements. the greed island arc was not quite as cool (i thought the whole trading card thing was kinda confusing) but still retained the plot well. now, where to begin on the chimera ant arc? there could have been so many better ways to continue the plot. i give it an 8.8 rating for: 1 point knockoff for the ants, 0.2 point knockoff for not involving kurapika and hisoka enough and for making gon's jankenpon one of the lamest nen abilities around. and the crappy art from the ant arc onward... but totally worth the read if you are willing to budget the time

but I'd recommend you to read only till "chimera ants" well, I know the mangaka was/is sick but, I didn't mind the crappy drawing at all :/ what makes me wonder is how the story was told after the hiatus he just started "narrating" like a illustration book and...well... made me so sad, I loved this series so much... I'm SO desappointed... :/

... with those who say Hunter x Hunter has become worse and worse since the Chimera Ant Arc. I loved Hunter x Hunter during the introduction of the illusionists, and Greed Island was also still interesting. Now I've got the feeling the mangaka doesn't care anymore and just wants to continue anyhow. I mean, there was this huge hiatus and the period where his drawings were so... crappy... now he's back to work but it doesn't look much better and I'm talking about both his drawings and the storyline. I hope it'll get better eventually =/

Interesting manga for anyone who love adventure. At first the story was really good with it's unique, yet adorable character. however right now, it seem to be off track with the chimera arc. It like watching dragonball Z now. As well, the plot isn't really advancing with Gon looking for his father at all. No improvement on plot developement. Sooner or later, I think it will be like extended filler that is sidetracking the writer from staying on course. Can't give it a 10 unless the plot advance. the whole chimera arc is rediculous as well.
