Description

Fudou Jun is a highschool teacher and takes a trip with a group of students. While there, a group of martial artists staying nearby take a strange interest in the girls.
These men are actually demons and after changing into their true form break into the cabin to rape the girls. One gets Jun and violates her.
She feels her soul being torn apart and transforms into Devilman Lady. With newfound powers and strength she kills all the demons and protects the girls from any further harm.
What are these demons and why did she turn into a hybrid of one? What does this mean for her and for the rest of humanity?

Gigantic mess and waste of time

Its Go Nagai so no one should be surprised if one of his works is ecchi or in this case ends up containing nudity, violence, rape, more rape, gang rape etc. The whole thing is a schizo mess. The art sometimes has some good panels and other times not so good. There's also a shift in art style from the first 3-4 volumes to the later ones that look closer to Go Nagai's style, which makes me think that the early volumes had a lot of work done by his assistants (I think he at one point had a large stable of them).

The story is an even bigger mess. In the first 3-4 volumes Jun our lead character becomes Devilman Lady. She's a former Olympic athlete and a teacher (in the anime that I saw like 15yrs ago she was a model). She's becoming increasingly violent and ruled by her baser emotions, she's worried about losing control and wants to fight devilbeasts as a channel for her aggression. This would be ok-ish except for the monster raping stuff done for titillation and drama.

Then someone must have gone up to Go Nagai and told him "hey this is too grim it needs some humor". At which point it turns into a slapstick buddy cop pseudo comedy (ouch my neck just got whiplash). Yes Jun joins the police force, while working at school, then is working at an embassy but still working at the school? Who cares if it makes sense right? Jun also gets a personality change, before she was mentally tough (she sure told off those Karate punks before becoming a devilman) and physically powerful but then she turns into a scared wallflower that needs rescuing and constant reassurance. Around this point someone goes up to Go Nagai and says "you know what this manga needs to boost sales? It needs the original Devilman!" And we return to grimness and let's throw in some wacky Christian stuff. Wait what happened to the pseudo-science explanation for Devilmen and Devilbeasts? Now we are doing pseudo-religious crap? Ugh, and who's story was this about anyways? I thought it was Devilman Lady. Oh, and nothing makes a woman feel better after being gang raped than having sex with some hot guy (WTF??), at least according to Go Nagai.

This is the easy stuff to criticize, the story has so many problems that its not worth going on about. That's not to say there wasn't some potential early on with the monster of the week early volumes. The story about her rival in swimming had some compelling moments and the story with the bullied boy was adding a little bit of nuance about who the real monsters are (hint: its the humans duh!). Unfortunately, a few small moments of possibility get crushed under a ton of garbage. I have no problem with violence, nudity or gore, but if its stupid aaand boring on top of that then its a problem. I made it thru about 11vol. of this trash before finally giving up. Devilman Crybaby it ain't.

Just the worst as usual

Another Go Nagai abortion that is now completely scanlated. Bleh. The art is rushed as always, the glorified rape is abysmal, the action scenes are uninteresting and the manga is deeply homophobic as always. So its Go Nagi as we know him. The only noteworthy aspect is the infamous ending that he came up with because of a temper tantrum and we all lost. The original Devil Man (4/10) is barely worth it so why is this thing 3,5 time the length? How much glorified gorn and gang rape is enough i say? Not his quite the worst Nagai manga but still. I give it the lowest score possible and will recommend Berserk, Parasyte and so on. They are perfect, this is vile garbage. The one part of the myth I don´t hate is Amon - Devilman Mokushiroku which is a fair 6/10 so read that for your Devilman fix.

I'm not one for horror but

I decided to give this a chapter or two now I'm at volume 14 waiting for the next release most of the time I turn around when I run into this genre I'm more toward comedy laugh your ass off type of manga reader but this book is good to get away from the norm I only get agitated when it comes to the religious mumbo jumbo

Whole series should be scanslated

I would dearly like to see the rest of this manga scanslated.

A number of Go Nagi's works portray God as evil and demons (very bad demons) as the good guys; being Christian, I find that highly offensive. If you don't believe me, check out his other works; you'll see.

Devilman Lady is one of Go Nagi's few works that does not do that explicitly; it's a shame, he's a very good artist and makes some good plots. Since this work (what I've read so far) doesn't commit the aforementioned offense, I would like to see the rest scanslated.

I've already seen the anime and would be grateful if some group out there would scanslate this manga.

Like most of u, i only read those scanlated, but I already had 26 anime episodes. It's good, nice animation, good character design, blood, monsters (yes, well-designed monsters) and the plot is different in a better way. Give the anime 10/10. Check it out and u will not regret.

Odd first opinions

being a reader of Devilman and a budding Go Nagai fan (would be if more translation was done of his work) so I checked out the small amount of this that has been scanlated.

Seems to maintain some of the tone of Devilman but with excessive nudity (don't get me wrong, I'm not a puritan, but I find having nudity on the cover, inner cover and first five pages with very little context to be slightly out of place in a serious manga) and sexual violence (similiar to that of Berserk).

Having seen only the one chapter I can't judge it as a whole, but it does seem to verge slightly towards exploitative for the sake of exploitative rather than to further the plot.
