Description

A handsome, selfish noble falls for a beautiful, kind commoner -- at least, that’s how the story’s supposed to go. When an average college student wakes up as Ripley, an extra in her favorite romance novel, she resolves to enjoy the luxuries of her character’s status while watching the novel's plot unfold from the sidelines. However, her plans are soon derailed when she finds herself in bed with no other than Duke Zeronis, the novel’s hero! Frustrating read

The First Night With the Duke is a frustrating read. The premise had potential, but the execution is buried under juvenile writing. The FL is written as so staggeringly stupid that it's impossible to suspend disbelief. We're told she was a college student in her previous life, yet she behaves with less awareness than a child. The "comedy" hinges almost entirely on "haha, she's dumb," which wears thin by chapter 10 and becomes unbearable by chapter 30.

The ML fares no better. Depending on how you interpret their first night together, he's either a rapist or a manipulative liar, and in both cases, someone who routinely threatens to kill the FL if she doesn't comply. Yet the story still expects the reader to accept him as a romantic lead with the moral high ground. The romance between the two feels less like a love story between adults and more like petty squabbles between kids on a playground, only with a veneer of nobility slapped on top.

The tonal whiplash also doesn't help. The first chapters lean into comedy, but any sense of humor quickly vanishes, replaced by endless angst that feels shallow and repetitive. By the time you reach the later chapters, you're left asking yourself: is this supposed to be a romance, a parody, or just a long-running joke at the expense of the FL's intelligence? Whatever the answer, it's not satisfying.

I think this was hilarious xD Especially FL with her maid and her " good ideas " xD
i laughed out loud when she thought becoming a nun and joining church will get her out of marriage xD
And the art was what brought all the comedy together..the way the expressions' ware drawn was just awesome 😀
The romance part was really nice to 🙂 i like it when it doesent take 100+ chapters for stuff to get started..

Tired of the "stick to the plot" trope

I've read enough of these novel transmigration stories to say that having the MC be so concerned over the original plot being followed that they feel forced to act against their emotions is one of the main plot devices that sucks the enjoyment out of a story for me.

This story is one of them. MC also has terrible ideas on how to "fix" the plot. What a mess.

Can't take it anymore

FL is one of the most annoying characters I've run across so far. Really good at coming up with terrible ideas and implementing them badly, then being surprised when they fail.
I really wanted to get into this and see the FL and ML settle down to trying to have a serious relationship, but stupidity just keeps popping its head up, leaving everything super shallow.

perfect comedy drama

This story was fun and light hearted at the beginning with a hilarious heroine and a male lead that at first appeared to be the common domineering type but as the story progresses he becomes an agreeable and loving man without taking his main personality apart. The character evolution on both leads was wonderfully done 👍

As for the story, it was a beautiful journey of character growth with a great plot. The comedy, for me, was on point and even so the story is actually rational unlike some commenters said, but rational within the comedy tag that is the first tag attached to this story so keep that in mind so you can enjoy this to its fullest. It doesn't make sense to expect a serious drama from a comedy. That said, this comic is actually very deep and moving and there is important drama going on. Fear not: there is happy ending and even happier side stories to enjoy. Aside from ten or so chapters the story is a happy and fun one.

The art is different, as in it's not very common to see nowadays but it's charming and very expressive. The illustrator portrays emotion and movement very well. The colours are lovely.

I think that for what it was proposed to be (comedy, drama, fantasy, Josei) this story is quite perfect and it's difficult to find a mistake on its execution.

Fun, then a bit angsty and then full of fluff

This starts as a comedy and ends with a lot of nice, well done fluff.
In the middle there is some character silliness based drama and some evil schemes drama, but it isn't too bad, and the end result is worth enduring through the small annoying parts.

One annoyance for example, a minor spoiler:

Most of the troubles the danger the FMC goes through could have been avoided if she was assigned a bodyguard. She is the daughter of a Count, even if she didn't have one by default, after being violently attacked multiple times you would think conclusions would be made.

Recommended for the romance and humor. There is basically no story besides the romance.

i don’t know how to properly explain it, but the FL just isn’t likable to me? I was only able to get through three chapters, and I honestly have no interest in reading more. I’d rather spend my time and coins on something else.

Kinda not cool how the ML pressured the FL and made her think that she had forced him when really it seemed like the other way around. Ignoring that, the rest of the story is good.

FML, ML and Sylvia are adorable. Enjoy the read. Absolutely gorgeous and vintage art. Satisfying ending with just a little irk in the beginning (Zeronis forced Ripley into the marriage)
