I don't understand how this turned into such an unbelievable pile of trash so fast.

(Vol. 1-2)

Volume one is fairly lighthearted despite Mai being overly aggressive. The idea that they're friends some days and girlfriends others is interesting. They both want something from each other and are trying to convince each other and see what fits.

Volume two just goes nuts and is not the kind of story I thought it was going to be with the current genre and tags. There is no girls love here between the leads. Mai turns into a complete monster.

This manga has multiple moments of feelsbad sexual assault between the main characters. It portrays the victim as being the one in the wrong (that is not the case) by her feelings of regret about actually fighting her off, one of the other characters confronting her over it and treating her with hostility, and a relative just thinking it's cool that someone pretty and famous had any interest in her in the first place.

This is overall not a comedy. The romance is hollow due to the above. I don't understand how this has 5 volumes so far with how shallow and unbelievable it is. I know a number of people like this level of trashy stuff in their shoujo ai/yuri manga, but not me.

The rest is me venting specifics.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Mai is a terrible person. Her feelings are one-sided and insincere and she has no respect for the main character as a person. The reactions of some of the characters to the main character when they find out what Mai has done to her make them terrible.

I was tempted to drop this in volume 2 when the mess started. It was jarring how far the author was taking it all of a sudden. I wanted to continue so I might not have wasted my money, but I wish I hadn't because it just got worse. I couldn't take any more of the stupidity and didn't even bother with the last 40 or so pages.

They've hardly been on one date when the author throws the interesting friend/girlfriend division the manga is supposed to be centered around out the window. In a situation of vulnerability forced by Mai where they're supposed to be in a position of trust, she breaks an established boundary not once but twice and sexually assaults her. This happens again later.

It doesn't go far either time, but it happens. There was no consent. Renako is very clear on this and shows shes upset about what's happening, She continuously says no and pushes her away, but Mai just continues. Mai would have raped Renako if not for something stopping the situation.

Maybe the worst part is the author doesn't even address it as such. It's like they don't even realize they were writing about sexual assault in the first place. They have the main character feeling bad about it and wanting to apologize. They have a friend that finds out (is actually TOLD by Mai in full detail despite their relationship being private, but it's not like Mai has any respect for the main character) confront Mai with hostility without any thought to the crime that occurred to her. Her little sister who actually walks in on it occurring has a reaction of thinking it's awesome and it would be cool to have Mai as a sister-in-law.

This was disgusting to me and is not what I want from this genre. One of the other characters that's started to be explored in volume 2 seems interesting, but it's not enough for me to want to continue with the rest of the train wreck this has become.
