Description

The ML treats the MC like a bully pretty much throughout the whole story. Interesting plot but I hate this type of romance dynamic with a passion.

You would like this if;

You are fine with a medium-slow paced stories.
You like complex characters that go through heaps of development.
Medium angst.
A relatively realistic plot and flawed characters.

You will not like it if;

You like quick and fluffy romances.
You believe in right or wrong. The whole story is "GRAY AREA".
Overpowerd MCs. The ML is powerful and smart but I will not call him OP.

This starts with an interesting idea.
But it never lives up to the potential I had hoped for.

Our lead characters is not intelligent. Which is fine. she knows she's not intelligent. She knows she's not skilled, does not have talents, and would struggle to make a living. That's not my issue

My issue (beyond it just generally not being interesting after she moves to the capital) is that there's this big mystery from the beginning. Of why her family was killed, why did the emperor become a tyrant etc.
And in the second season we get at least some explanation for these things.
And then our lead starts freaking out,as if it radically changes her outlook on life so much that she doesn't now what to do. which doesn't make sense unless she's even more unintelligent than I expected.
Because the revelations were REALLY underwhelming. It really wasn't as huge a deal as she's acting. Her goal should not change, her plans should not change. She's making a large mountain out of what's best a hill.

Really,would've been a better story if she had assassinated the prince at the beginning, somehow.

Unless this suddenly starts getting rave reviews upon completion from pulling off a great few final seasons, I think just stay away.

read this on the recommendation that the writing and character development were very good which i’m always here for in oi. and they were completely right!

got engrossed in the court drama. though i will say perhaps the translation is vague or the adaptation had difficulty simplifying language to fit a comic style, but i had to keep re-reading panels and slowing down which is rare. either hindrance or blessing, depending on how you look at it.

though i have some difficulty understanding the plot twists or the character motives, it eventually all clicked through careful reading. one of my first manhwas to ever encourage that! was terribly intriguing to learn more about this world and feel the tangibility of their love and despair.

i actually really enjoy the character designs, the art (very in line for its genre & yet unique, taking a lot of inspiration of classic shoujos), and the relationships between characters. really loved the slow desperate adoration from the ml & the tenderness that the fl treats him with despite all their shared trauma. ml has probably one of the most nuanced characterizations and strongest personalities i’ve seen in an oi yet tbh.

yes, at times the fl’s choices frustrated me, but she’s completely understandable - she acts on a logical conclusion to what she had experienced and lived through. the people being cruel to her & certain other characters is very frustrating; the entire point is that humanity is always possible. even when all is lost. absolutely love the fl (a very determined, upright, mentally strong character who goes through an evolution of her own)!

9/10 - waiting on the fourth season to finish out the review 🙂

For those who thinks the FL is realistic...uh...sure. I mean, yes, all the things she feels and does and says in her head ARE realistic. However, how she goes about living her second chance at life is so damn stupid I can't sympathize with her. I'm not asking her to be a Mary Sue where she turns a plot corner and the correct answer is waiting for her, all dolled up and ready to go, with zero efforts on her part. I don't expect her to suddenly learn how to fight or become clever and conniving to protect her family.

Yes, I understand she's a literal kid during her second life but it's her SECOND. She was 18 in her first. More than old enough to figure at least one thing out, considering all the advantages she's grown up with.

What I was expecting is for her to take a good hard look at her own family's circumstances. This idiot even hinted at it herself! (And completely dismisses the idea in the same panel! My blood pressure!) She doesn't know a damn thing about running the county her father is a count of! Which might have gotten her some clues to why her family was annihilated in the 1st life! Like, she actually thought about the politics of her father's death for a scorching hot minute but was all "yeeeeah, nah, let's go do something else like becoming the hidden prince's attendant!" Kudos to her for admitting she's a goddamn coward though. But if she knew politics is why she died why, oh, WHY is she ignoring it again in 2nd life?! I'm sorry, what?!?

It took until ch.35-ish for her to FINALLY rub two braincells together to get even vaguely curious about whats-his-face, the father of her "best" friend, who maybe, somehow, framed her family. She doesn't scrutinize her friendship with the daughter of her enemy until that point. This "friend" who has a hot and cold relationship with her even in her 1st life. And her first, self saving idea is to run face first to the prince where she'll be cooped up in a gilded cage...so she's even MORE restricted from gathering intel than if she stayed home?!😕

ARGH.

DROPPED. It's 41 chapters in and all I want to know is how Prince Rupert came to power. I couldn't care less about the FL or her family. They're not even shown in a way that'll endear them to a reader. There's definite attempts but they fall flat for me. Ugh. There's cluelessness and then there's deliberate blindness, and this annoying FL is the second.

The story and characters of the manhwa are pretty realistic. However, the slow pace of the manga really bored me out. The plot felt very drawn out. Thus I dropped it at chapter 39.

The FL is one of the strengths in the series

I love how layered and complex the fl is. She's so well-written. At first, I thought she'll turn out to be another typical OI heroine, but I realized that her character has so much to offer. I love how this series doesn't shy away from the dark thoughts someone will have towards the person they hate. Her actions and thoughts are justified and even though she's not physically strong or a renowned genius, she struggles to survive and gives it her all. All in all, I thank the author for giving us such a unique female lead.

Brutally Intriguingly Dark

The story starts out feeling like an overdone trope.
We find out how wrong we are a chunk of the way in. The story takes all the stereotypes of the romantic regression trope with the fixer upper ML and slaps reality on it.

At the risk of slightly spoiling, the narrator doesn’t know everything and she won’t be everything. She won’t gain magical powers, won’t have uncanny insight, won’t be the charismatic diva we’ve come to know and love in most regression stories. She’s going to be a person with constant failures. She’s going to be wrong and figuring out details as she goes. She’s going to be jaded, have PTSD, self-loathing, intrusive thoughts, anxiety - everything we would’ve had if we saw everyone we knew and loved killed in front of us.

And that’s what makes this series so good. It’s a harsh reality dolled up by cute art.

TLDR:
If you want a fluffy feel good like “Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp” this isn’t for you. If you don’t mind dark themes and want you to be screaming because that one thing mentioned 30 chapters ago suddenly explains so much and flipped everything you knew on its head- this is for you.

this is meant to be full of intrigue, mystery and really slow-burn in developing relationships, so you can't just look and determine it terrible off the bat— the characters do change and grow as they mature
the ml does turn out pretty interesting and endearing, even if at first he seems like another ashle who kills the fl yet still manages to win her love
