Description

This whole review is a spoiler so.

I could go on about the things I loved (a warrior mom!) and things I disliked (why wasn’t the son included??), but ultimately by the end the thing that took up most of my headspace was that damn I really wish I could see more of Kamio and Minha. No, seriously. They were so, so cute. To end it right there implying that they never got to see each other again makes me grumpy. I don’t care if that’s what’s realistic… it makes me sad… and I do understand from a writer’s point of view having written a similar story and not wanting to bend rules just so that “romance can prevail” or whatever, but it will always feel so dissatisfying for a reader. Especially since maybe Brunhilde could come in clutch so they can meet…

Incredible premise; slow overly dramatic unfolding

Pausing at Ch. 45
I really love the concept. Lots of great elements such as: a rich set of characters with meaningful depth for some of them; an isekai concept that is both easy to understand and very original; good art; very interesting world building; meaningfully complex conflicts; multi-dimensional villains; many layers of stories & relationships; etc.

However, the part that got me stuck is the super slow development of resolution of the traumas. The characters seem to be overly struggling with acknowledging their traumas, behaviors, challenges, etc. Maybe I'm being too nit picky, but the author makes the protagonists' personal issues painfully obvious to the reader and then drags you through numerous arcs where the characters are causing themselves all kinds of suffering while needing forever to notice these issues themselves.

Maybe I'm just not in the right headspace to enjoy this right now, but it's definitely too slow for me to read, atm.

I love the basic idea -- the hero that this strange, desperate world is looking for is not the teeange school girl who has always wanted more from life, but her middle-aged mother who isn't doing this again. Myeongok is such a great protagonist with a fantastic design -- she looks like my mom! She's a stereotypical mom, with a tracksuit and a broom, but this story doesn't feel cheesy at all. There's a lot in here about fear, trauma, and family pressure, but it's not just through flashbacks. I really like how present and tangible all of these themes feel, and how they're expressed through character dynamics and through plot.

The queen, who makes her daughter Luka burn down a village to teach her a lesson about responsibilty, is paralleled with Myeongok who doesn't expect anything from her daughter Minha, even when Minha really wants her mom to think highly of her.

No idea if it's Webtoon's dodgy translations again, but Kamio, the alchemist character, uses they pronouns, and Luka, who uses she pronouns, is referred to as the crown prince. It's nice...
