Mixed feelings

I won’t rate it since I think it’s unfair that I dropped it before the plot could REALLY unfold, but based off the first 20 chapters I would have easily given this a very mediocre rating. The attraction between the two leads came out of nowhere. I don’t understand why this girl couldn’t stop thinking about him from the get-go. Just some dude on a bus. Sure, he’s cute, but why are you so stuck on him. He did actually reciprocate which was nice because it’s wasn’t an unbearably embarrassing one-sided crush, but it was a bit fast. Fast romances can often be described as having great tension or just being satisfying, but truth is there’s little reason for two people to fall so sincerely in love so quickly.

The thing that really got me to drop it though was the angst edging. Excuse my language. All this narration about what was going to happen: oh, had he only not smiled like that, oh, maybe it would have been better should we never have met, oh, I couldn’t have known how desperate and tragic and awful things turned out to be. Too much. Maybe I’m just an unusually anxious reader though.

I couldn’t help but skip to the end as I always do and I have rarely been so confused. There was clearly a lot more going on than what the beginning implied, and what could actually explain the instant attraction. This is why I feel I can’t rate properly because I didn’t experience the story as I should have. But I can’t ignore that I felt compelled to stop reading in the first place because a story should never have to “wait” to get past the start and become enjoyable if it’s truly a good story. Or admittedly there are some rare exceptions where I think this may apply, but this wasn’t one of them for me.

Kinda dark and angsty BUT IT’S WORTH IT

Sometimes you just gotta read an angsty, dark, and heartwrenching type of story, you know? And this one is it. I love how it’s not tagged tragedy, cuz that’s a big hint already. I had to read the last 3 chapters in Korean raws cuz I couldn’t stand the cliffhanger — omg, the rollercoaster of emotions. Even though I didn’t understand anything, I could understand the gist… sure it’s a happy ending, but still, what they went through…

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ji-oh died by Giseong shooting her (STUPID GUY! Gah but family, fine…!). She saw in their previous cop life that he suicides right after she dies — so she tells him to live. And Gyeol really did live out the rest of his life. He enjoyed the new movie, the dessert, and he lived and died of old age. I was so relieved seeing he went back in time again, and he even went to school a different way too. The amount of JOY I FELT when Ji-oh had her memories and they reunited. 😭! Not a true HEA since she still died, but this kind of an ending is totally fitting for a story of this calibre.

I love the storytelling. Perfect pacing and tone, dialogue to draw out the suspense and mystery. The characters had such depth, especially the leads. Their romance is something that’s unreal 😭. The art! The love scenes!!! Not overdone to be explicit, but just enough to make it sexy. It’s too good!!!!

Some qualms, if I had to be picky?

Would have been nice if Ji-oh regaining ALL her memories of all her past lives was explained better. It literally just “happened” and was a shock (but I guess the intended effect was that we were in the same shoes as Gyeol…). More explanation behind the reliving: how many times did Gyeol relive his life? Seeing more examples of their past lives would be nice too. Definitely would have loved to see more of Gyeol’s POV, because his narration just shows how much he lives for and loves Ji-oh. WE WANNA SEE MORE of this sappy lovesick inner monologue.

But that’s just me saying how this webtoon is perfect. Too many details would spoil the suspense and direction of the story.

Amazing work by Yuju. This is the kind of story that you’ll have to reread to capture all the details, and you will enjoy that second read too.

constant foreshadowing...

I'm nervous to keep reading because, although I love what I'm seeing and the sexual chemistry between the two is palpable, the retrospective narrative is foreshadowing a level of angst I don't know I can handle. Might be too much of an emotional roller-coaster for me...

Update: Onto ch 53 and so far so good. Loving the mystery that's slowly taking shape. What a gem of a series.

Update: finished series. The ending was fitting. Really good series, but be ready for tears.
If you're concerned about whether the ending is sad or happy:

Bittersweet ending. Sad path to the end, but the final bit showed that things were going to start off better.

I'm rating it 9 only because it's still ongoing 🙂
It's definitely one of the best webtoons I've read. The story, the art, the mystery, the chemistry, the BODY, it's all there!
Edit: after the end I can give a 10 without any guilt. I'm a sucker for

happy endings and I think this one can be considered as such, especially with Epilogue.

The only thing I'm not really happy about is that the printed volumes have extras that were not included in the digital version, epilogue especially, and there's no English version of the books. Hopefully one day.

hard to rate

i'm surprised there's only 17 votes for this webtoon and no comments. the story's done pretty well for the genre the author set out to do: the good girl and the bad-boy-who-actually-cares-about-her kind of pairing (a.k.a. unrealistic but very popular with some josei readers).

the attraction was there between the guy and the girl from the get go. the tension and chemistry between them is done very well. the guy's bad boy charisma just literally oozes off the screen so kudos to the author there.

the art is fantastic and the author uses interesting angles like scenes where you view from over someone's shoulder. it's almost like cinematography at times.

there is an ominous looming sense of mystery for the male lead's thoughts / background / actions so you don't know much else about him. And as the reader, you'll be puzzled by some of his actions but we're given tidbits that maybe there's some sort of time travel or parallel universe kind of thing going on in the story with the female lead having prescient dreams.

so there's a lot going for this story. it's just hard for me to rate because i'm not into the bad boy trope, especially when they still love each other after 10 years of separation despite barely knowing anything about the other person. the attraction was always there but that's it, so there's not much to keep their romance going or why they're so deeply in love even after 10 years. But the mystery is intriguing which keeps me reading, and maybe there'll be an explanation for the unrealistic romance. i really hope it's not actually the time travel or parallel universe trope since that's so overdone, but hopefully there's a creative spin to it if it's actually that.

but if you like this genre, then you'll likely love this story.
