Description
This story is a spinoff from Narita Minako-sensei's own series "Cipher" where Siva's friend Alex Levine is now the main character. Ever since Alex was young, he has harbored a complex about his extremely pretty face. People are always comparing him to a girl, so to combat this image, he has thrown himself into practicing martial arts. One day, though, he is scouted by someone to become a fashion model and thus begins Alex's tale of growth and romance!

Alex Levine, you fascinate me

Great read. This is one of those mangas where a lot happens, which makes it hard to explain, only thing you truly remember is it's fun and entertaining and has a GREAT main character (Alex Levine).

There is one small issue that should be considered here, and that's that there is little to no character growth for anyone. They all start off being interesting and unique, but they don't change in any real way throughout the manga. Even though I say there isn't any character growth, you don't really need it when the characters are so interesting as they are.

Alex is extremely capable, almost to the point where you can't relate personally to him, but he's down to earth, so very likable either way.

Ambrosia though... I don't like her character towards the end. She is introduced and shown in the beginning as a strong independent woman, yet fails at being just that later on. She becomes annoyingly "female" towards the end. I wanted her to stay awesome, like she started out as, but whatever... Still an interesting character and still very likable.

The plot: ya... not much to say. They (all the characters) are in university and Alex gets a modeling job. We follow the next 1,5 (I think) of his life. He is also looking for his biological father during this time. That's basically the plot.

All in all it's a very well told and interesting manga (because Alex is interesting). If you don't like Alex, you won't like this manga. But like I said, he is very likable.

On a complete side note, the group/people who translated this manga, I a word with you. Some of the mistakes you make are awkward to read (like writing French, when you mean France). But since there are very few, it doesn't matter that much. Just reminding you all, that French and France are NOT interchangeable.

I am 32 years old now. And this manga be ranked the 8th place in my favorite list.
Maybe it's because of my age, so I don't like some garbage manga, not real enough, or some of which characters are not developed well, or some can't bring readers into them.

I also like other manga of this author. Like Cipher and Natural. Although Alexandrite is the sequel of Cipher, but I like this manga Alexandrite more, and I also give it more credit.

As you can see, an author's drawing style and plot developing skill will evolve. I don't recommend the author's manga prior to Cipher, because there is a huge gap in the drawing style and I just don't like the it. And I think her drawing even improves a little in Alexandrite than Cipher, in a more touching way to express the scenery.

Natural is also good. But I don't recommend Hana Yori mo Hana no Gotoku, because the story just is too prosaic for me.

There is a small portion of the character's lines in the translation isn't good enough, not a faithful trainslation for the original lines.

In a small portion, the character's line just change into the other easy wording not according to the original. Although this problem seems not to interfere the reading, but you will not know some interesting lines, expression or humor compared to the original lines.

Like in volume 6, Alex tries to persuade Ambrosia to do sex, and he tries to be kidding by using his hands as a gesture to do hypnotism. I think the dialogue may transfer into "See? You're also want to do it now." But the translator renew the dialogue as "See?You're gonna hit me now, aren't you?".

And some the other small places of the translation just has the same problem.

I think the reason may be that the translator is too young or he lacks a sense of Japanese/Asia humor.

Really a slice of life. Reading this manga was like taking a nostalgic trip to my childhood. The issues of the late 80's and early 90's like the AIDs fundraiser and the like, the lack of cell phones, answering machines, etc. I love the scavenger hunt the Columbia students did, now a days all that running around would never happen, they would just Google 90% of it. The characters are all so real and likeable. The story was interesting and heartwarming.

It's really natural and the characters seem real. The heroine, Ambrosia, is not the typical weak crying heroine. She's strong and love playing drums as well as dressing up and being pretty at the same time. One of my favorites. I keep all of my Alexandrite inside my "treasure box" so I can read it again and again biggrin lol
