This is interesting, a very unique manga, and for that it certainly earns points. It's not about love alone nor any of the categories classify it well enough.
Yuji and Kojima have been in love with each other since they were childhood friends, but neither of them is willing to admit it when they drift apart. As soon as they become close again, they are bad influences on each other's life, though it may be hard to understand that at first. I'm sure most people will read this and hate only Kojima, or think, as the girl did, that he's affecting Yuji negatively. To me, it's actually much more Yuji's fault than it is Kojima's. Trapped in the other's company, they soon find themselves engaging in dangerous or immoral situations, given that Kojima's always the one who suggests it, and Yuji executes it. With that being said, I agree with Yuji's own opinion upon himself: though Kojima's the one who likes to do that kinda stuff, he actually is disturbed for real, and therefore incapable of telling if something he's doing is wrong. Rather, I think he just doesn't acknowledge it and uses it as excuse to spend time with Yuji, as Yuji does himself. Yuji, on the other hand, is quite self-conscious, so he's even more responsible for letting things carry on and turn out badly.
I may be reading too much into it, but I think it's a metaphor of their love itself. They don't know how to approach each other again, so they do twisted stuff in order to be brought closer by it - and since I love twisted stuff, I love this.
While on the metaphors, the "Kojima's the light that guides me through the darkness" thing is amazing, too.
I especially love how it goes towards the ending, when Kojima realized what he's done and tries to protect Yuji. That part moved me to tears.
Another hear throbbing, somewhat bittersweet moment to me was when Yuji realized he loved Kojima. It was beautifully well-developed by Sugiura-sensei, how the pieces came together in Yuji's mind.
I also like the art and pacing very much, as well as the way the characters' personalities get deeper by the second and they change the other's attitude towards life completely.
I have only a few complaint.
First of all, that it doesn't have anything, ANY physical contact AT ALL! I mean, I know it's shounen-ai, and that more importance is given to the story than to the touching, which is precisely what I like, but...c'mon, a little kissing wouldn't hurt =/
Also, I don't know quite what it is, but this manga seems to be lacking it. Like it's trying to hard to be perfect.
Finally, the impact that characters made on me isn't enough. They are not remarkable, and I say that even though Kojima's precisely my type of character. By that I mean that I'll probably remember this manga and re-read it if I want something good, but I won't even remember the character's names.
'm not rating it 10, though it's a pretty good one and you should read it.
