Seriously. I mean, it's not so deep that you sit there and tilt your head, and think, and go... "OH!" ten days later. It's just... mind blowing and good and full of twists and turns and surprises. It really is a fast read! I agree though, at times the characters were SO annoying, especially the shifting love triangle as I think someone else mentioned. But it really did make up for it, and it almost made sense in a way?

Anyways I can not tell you how many times I passed this up! But really, don't, it was a lot better than my expectations!

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I REALLY LOVED THE ENDING! I couldn't have pictured a better ending, really. It was the perfect place to end the series, which is weird because we as readers only got that slight glimpse into the REAL life of Ichijo; but it had that hopeful, expecting feeling when they both got on the same train, but it wasn't cheesy.

However, it brought sooo many questions to mind:
1) DID SOU AND KUREHA MAKE IT OUT?!? were their moms saved? Did they just die in the womb? Did they not graduate therefor??? I really wanted closure on this! I nearly cried when they were all in the circle...

2) Are the events in the "school" indicative of what events happen in the characters life?? For example, is Kureha destined to be raped, Sou destined to conjure up a sister, etc.? Will Ichijo have a relationship with Sou?!

3) Were all the mothers in that class in the same hospital?

I'm sure there were others... I just had to get them out! They're bugging me! If anyone would want to discuss them, I'd love to PM :D

I'm definitely reading it again at some point to see if I can get anything more out of it with all you learn... I'm sure it will be like reading a new story smile

This manga is easily one of the strangest series I've ever read. The ending was superb. The only reason I didn't give this a ten was because the characters are incredibly annoying and frustrating throughout it. However, the ending definitely saved everything. I highly recommend this manga. It's a quick manga, and you won't regret it.

i read the whole 10volumes in one sitting...

...until 2:00AM and I have NEVER read 10 volumes in one sitting let alone stay up for manga. Mizushiro Setona is one of my most favorite mangakas because she's just awesome (1999 Shanghai and others were amazing). 10 volumes seemed overwhelming but after the 1st bizarre volume, i became addicted! Mizushiro Sentona is not only a great artist but an amazing storyteller...

if you're looking for a story that is full of suspense, twists, and an INCEPTION like mind slapping, this is the one. the ending is unpredictable and it deals with deep themes. Sure, the characters get annoying sometimes (responding to someone who reviewed here), but that's what makes them more real -- wouldn't YOU get confused and frustrated that you're half male & female? sheesh XD

but this met (and exceeded somewhat) my expectations of Mizushiro Sentona's work. all of her works are really deep (like this one) but keep in mind, I'm 19 now and when I read first read a manga of hers at 13 years old, I found it really boring and confusing so...yea. have an open, mature mind when reading her works because you WON'T regret it!

The plot starts off pretty good. Then I started to get annoyed with the characters, but I stuck with it because the plot was so interesting. Then it dragged a little, but I was getting near the end, so I figured I might as well finish the thing. And then came the twist ending that no one was expecting (or at least I didn't expect it).
After School Nightmare or Houkago Hokenshitsu is surreal and screws with your mind. But it's also one of the most interesting and original manga I've read in a long time. It's definitely not one of my usual reads (ie: shoujo fluff), but I wasn't disappointed with it (although it could have used some fluffiness to help cut through the super heavy-handed drama). The ending is particularly good since it's satisfying and unexpected.
Go for it if you're ready for some major psychological drama.

I really, really liked this manga. Probably the reason is because usually shoujo manga tends to be light and not to have deep meanings, but this manga is a bit different. It does have several cliches of the shoujo manga world, like a love triangle, or teenage angst or difficult parents but it has so many original things that you kind of overlook all that.

I enjoyed the twists and turns the story took, most of the times you don't realize things until the author wants you to realize about them, and that's something quite difficult to achieve. When I realized about things (like who was who in the dream), I felt like re-reading it all over again, because things had changed completely. Until the very end of the story I couldn't have even guessed what "winning" the game in the dream meant.

If you don't like yuri or yaoi it might get weird at times because it's a huge mixture of things and as s/he doesn't know what s/he is, it's difficult for the reader too to decide what kind of relationships s/he has with those around.

I would absolutely recommend this manga, I really enjoyed reading it and would probably re-read it in the future.

A Mixed Bag?

After School Nightmare's been a doozy of a ride - on one hand, I've loved it and sometimes I just couldn't stand it. Mashiro's indecisiveness, his weakness, and the melodramatic love triangle that shifts throughout the story..It's all quite thrilling, amusing - but it seems tiresome and exasperating all at once. I think After School Nightmare is just a bit too much to be good - a bit too absorbing and anxiety stricken.. But every moment, I've went on to keep reading. Psychologically,I've adored it especially with the imaginative depictions of each one's inner soul. I can't say I love it, but neither can I admit it was a waste of time. I've enjoyed it the whole way though, and I guess it's been a fun time reading~

I really liked this story, and the theme about finding and accepting yourself for what you are. But the end was too abstract and contradicting compared to what has happened throughout the manga. This makes me drop the rating of Houkago Hokenshitsu.

The ending shouldn't keep you from reading it, though.

I really love this manga i really do!!
and yet again i don't blame Ichijo for the decision he made...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I don't get how people don't really get him\she being a she in the end. but i think that Ichijo was in denial about being more girl than a boy yet again this is my total option but i think that she CHOSE that in the end because she felt better being a girl...

Very Original But...

I found this one very original and interesting up until the point where the whole point of the class and what graduating really means is finally revealed. The ending was a complete let down though....

Spoiler (highlight to view)
When you consider that Mashiro was actually two souls sharing one body, he/she never really comes to terms with him/herself. Instead the female version kills the male before graduating thus only she is actually born. When you get down to it, the character never really grew in the sense of being able to accept both sides, which is probably the whole point of the nightmare class in the first place. Oh well.

Badly Uneven

Begins with a very strong "dark fantasy" and "psychological thriller" feeling, which is quite fascinating. There's a lot of mysterious imagery that isn't trying too hard to confuse. This lasts for about three volumes, and it is excellent.

Then it devolves into a love triangle and a pretty hackeneyed one, to boot. The dark fantasy angle becomes an occasional punctucation rather than the central mechanic. A little later after that, it's turned into a downright high-school soap opera. Better executed than most, perhaps, but just as twisty and aimless, and not without its share of cliche...including one the author really should be ashamed of. Finally, it just becomes a sucession of cheap nonsense. I couldn't even recognize it anymore.

Like too many seralizations, it began with an intriuging idea that the author just couln't maintain for long enough.
