Description
From Storm in Heaven:
After a scandal got him kicked out of his position at court, Takaaki's been idling the days away at his manor, impulsive and bored. Then one day his friend Naruhito stops by and tells him an insane story about the most beautiful woman alive -- and drags him off in his attempt to win her heart. Tagging along, Takaaki soon realizes that the "Princess" isn't exactly who she (he!?) seems to be. Who exactly is Princess Kaguya, and what is the dark secret behind her (his!?) past?

I freakin' LOVE this!

I should be asleep! But I'm not! Because I thought that I'd just read a very little bit of this manga before going to sleep, and BAM! I read the WHOLE THING AND WANTED MORE!!!

...And, and then, and then I got so excited I accidentally posted this comment before finishing it! I'm not posting while exactly coherent, but I laughed, I cried, it was better than Neko-tachi! Sorry for the perhaps obscure reference, but it's true. I give it a 9 only because it was too short and a little little little bit awkward in a few places, but aren't we all? The awkward part, not the short part.

I'm going to sleep now with happy dreams about amnesia. Which I won't remember, of course.

coming from junjou romantica, which annoyed me a lot, this is a breath of fresh air. hilarious take on the original. and the art is beautiful (mmh-mmmh, heian period). i am happy now; this is the mangaka whom i fell in love with when reading hybrid child.

but shounen-ai, no, i don't think so. the bit that might seem that way is only played for its humour value, and sorry, that doesn't count. calling this shounen ai would be like calling hanakimi shounen-ai just because it has a guy who openly professes his love for his male senpai (who isn't the least bit interested, ever).

Once upon a time there was a legend about a beautiful princess. Then, a crazy mangaka called Nakamura Shungiku decided to make her own whacky hilarious version. Enjoy.

Once upon a time, I can't read any of Nakamura-sensei's manga because her art style is just too chaotic for my taste. That is, until I read Mangetsu Monogatari. I should've known the humor will get to me. It's SO FREAKIN' FUNNY! This is not sensei's best, but it could be her funniest! biggrin

funny oneshot manga

When you read something with the author's name "Shungiku Nakamura" on it, you automatically expect some BL elements - this was not really the case for this oneshot. There were some hinted elements like a blush, but that's it.
Nonetheless, it was a short but funny read, the characters were written well (especially the MC Takaaki, damn I wish he'd have worn his hair open more often...), but it kinda felt like there was planned a lot more (and I'd have read all of it). Overall, it's a short story collection around Takaaki and his weird quirks, his sidekick Kaguya became pretty irrelevant after chapter 2.
I am kinda surprised about the drawing part since it's one of Nakamura's earlier stories and she tended to have heavy problems with proportions when she started (monster hands and snake necks) - this story is drawn flawless, characters and backgrounds are perfect and screen tones are professionally used. If it wasn't for her recognisable style, I'd say it was drawn by another person.

The story tells us Sakuya is alive. They went to the cave in which he was captured a little more than 3 months ago (we don't know exactly how long Kaguya kept up the farce, but we know that their (wrong) son went missing 3 months ago(=when Kaguya fell off the cliff and lost his memory)). They don't show how he looks or what he had to go through (probably found some water and has starved a lot (weak breathing noises)), only his shadow is shown to the reader (Takaaki: "If Sakuya's dead, then nothing will ever be sure...if he's dead...(...)...he's alive."). The cave part fades out here, but they speak about him afterwards (Kaguya: "Are they going to kill me?" Takaaki: "Don't worry about it. Sakuya said 'I fell and broke my leg, and I just couldn't move.'")

It's fun

This manga was quite entertaining overall; I love the humour and especially the cute and funny chibi drawings. Only one gripe about the second chapter: I don't know if I missed some pages somewhere but its conclusion feels like a total puzzle to me.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
What happened to the real Sakuya? What did Takaaki find moving in the cave at the end? Did they completely gloss over that issue just to wrap that arc up, nice and convenient?

It was really odd and I never got my confusion explained, which really put a dent on my enjoyment of the rest of the manga even though I can see that it's a lot of fun.

Her Best Work

I think this manga hands down beats all of the mangaka's other works, especially Junjou Romantica. The story is hilarious and innovative, more so if you know the tale it was based on (Taketori Monogatari). There are not many mangaka who are able to do a spin on classic Japanese literature without falling way short of the original, but Nakamura Shungiku did very well with this manga.
