the characters are very cute and always in chibi form. i love how it handle 'big' subject like war, occupation and oppression in tongue-in-cheek way, because really, we know they are bad, but doesn't mean they are not funny in hindsight. the stereotypes and tidbits of information about the nations are very appreciated. there's quite a lot of hoyay in here, but i don't think it will deter anyone for its pure comedy.

Not for people who find everything personal

As ussual there are people, who have absolutly no sence for humor and find everything insulting (reminds me of that black guy found it racistic that Aids came to USA from Haiti). But don't let it bother you, manga has fairly many interesting facts (for a manga), and it's pretty entertaining too, although it sometimes gets a little repetetive. It isn't even going towards dark humor as you could expect from this kind of stuff.
So as people have said it already before, if you are interested in history, and like to read short concentrated stories this is good for you.

Well, for the art part of it, it's pretty crappy at first, but keep in mind that Hidekaz started Kitayume in 2003, and art can change a lot in 4-5 years.
I find the art awesome now, but then again, everyone has a different opinion on things.

First off Japan is not reminding us of World War 2. It in Japanese... they are reminding themselves. We stole and translated it to English. Also if you actually care about history you will appreciate the comedy in this.

Hetalia isn't all about bishounen!

One thing people should note is, the pairing up in Hetalia represents alliances that the countries made throughout history. The stereotyping shouldn't be taken seriously, because well... we all stereotype, whether we like it or not.

About the history part of Hetalia, I've noticed that Hidekazu hasn't drawn anything about WWII in seriousness. It mostly revolves around Italy's uselessness as an ally, customs and stereotypes of the nations (such as America trying to be a hero all the time) and is actually incredibly well-researched (he didn't just go through articles in wiki, people!).

Not all of the characters in Hetalia are male. There is a majority of male characters, but the most coolest have to be the females such as Hungary and Belarus! Most people are put off by this male majority, so I felt like giving examples of female characters.

Think of it as a parody, like a SNL for history!

This series depicts the countries involved in parodies of the World Wars and other historical events as cute guys and (some) girls. It's a hilarious, somewhat educational (since it's WAY more fun than your history classes laugh ), and great fun with the stereotyping.
