Boring

I read only 7 volumes, so I can't speak for the whole story, but while the story seemed interesting at the beginning, it quickly became boring. Tohru is dumb and her happy-go-lucky and everyone-likes-her portrayal makes her annoying. After the first few volumes the story line disappeared and it just became a page after page of nothing, so that I had to force myself to continue reading. After vol. 7 I gave up. Maybe I had too high expectations for this series, but I really can't recommend it, I've read better series.

The story forgot what it was for a while

I remember being really into this series in early high school. As an illustrator it was the starting point for a lot of my personal art style and of course plenty of fan fictions. I remembered reading scans of this series as it was still ongoing and being happy about catching the series as it was still going on. However, over time, I never quite followed up with the series or finished it. It took me watching the 2019 anime to finally say I've experienced the general story.

As much as this series holds a special place in my heart, watching it and going back over the series again, I see a lot of flaws...

In terms of the overall story, if you love a good drama, a good cry, and vast array of characters and personalities, this is perfect tragedy for you. Though as for a fantasy or even "magical realism" kind of story, it lacks in many aspects. What drew me to this story was the whole curse, but it became less and less important over time. It wouldn't have been as popular without them turning into animals, but if you remove that gimmick, the entire story will still make sense.

They could have really played with the curse some more by making it more of a mission to "break" it (cuz someone had to have known more about this centuries long curse). Giving everyone "true forms" too could have raised the stakes of the story as well. Even if they were turning more into animals over time could have worked. The stakes were just low and didn't seem to matter over time. Which just with a few changes it could have worked very well.

Overall, I think the story forgot what it was supposed to be. This was extremely prevalent when Yuki became the main character for a while. When the story went back to Kyo and Tohru, I found myself no longer caring for the two. I wanted Yuki's happiness and him to continue on his journey of healing. Maybe this is why the "Fruits Basket Another" series focuses on the student council... this became the best part of the series!

The story too, I feel, really is a product of its time. This was created in 1998 (translated in the early 2000s) and I feel newer generations would see this series and wonder why no one got therapy for their problems. I feel like as a millennial, lots of the focus of bettering yourself and being kind to people who really shouldn't deserve that kindness are all ideals we grew up in. I don't see many people trying to hold out and hold on to those who have abused them, belittled them, or even tried to kill them (Akito mainly). It really makes Tohru's kindness really odd sometimes due to this PC culture we live in now... but that kindness is also exactly what people need.

Sorry for the ramble. Overall, this story is a classic and must read/watch for younger fans in the manga communities. I personally hope that the author decides to do a spin off focusing more on the curse than the family abuse, maybe an earlier generation of some zodiac members when the curse was stronger could be a fun place to explore. Who knows!

Not as good as I remember it..

Hmm.. I think childhood nostalgia is the only thing keeping me from disliking this. It wasn't horribly bad, but its definitely lacking a lot in the story and characters. Theres too many overlapping issues (mostly family related) with nothing really special or complex about them either. I did enjoy Yuki's story as it was the most elaborate and well developed. His trauma stemmed from abandonment, neglect, and prejudice from pretty much everyone in his life yet he was able to overcome that darkness independently with encouragement of Tohru. Other than that, it was just a lot of generic parenting issues that were breezed over. Also, the relationships in the story are very childish and developed too quickly. As a result, most of the relationships felt shallow and overdramatized. I felt especially dumbfounded with Arise and Kureno's story since they had absolutely no reason to be that infatuated with each other. Also.. the situation between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo was resolved in such a sloppy way.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There seemed to be so much more development and background content between Yuki and Tohru than with Kyo. From the moment they first met as children to all the times she encouraged him to find his true self, and then eventually the moment when he realizes he can't live without her. She was literally the first person to genuinely appreciate his existence in a time when everyone else treated him as an object. It was strange to abruptly change directions midway and turn that into familial love after all that was said and done. Plus they should have either created a better foundation for Tohru and Kyo's relationship or spent more time on developing it like they did with Yuki. It's just too convenient to stick in a touching story about how she wanted to be the year of the cat as a child and call it a day. Maybe they were trying to end it in a heartwarming way, but something about this outcome just didn't feel satisfying enough.
Ugh.. and I don't even want to get into the toxicity behind Shigure and Akito... All that build up for something so trivial. For such a unique story idea, it's a shame that it was executed so poorly.

My favourite shoujo of all time.
It despeicts the importance of love and to be loved, to show kindness an affections to those who surround us. It's about all types of love.
I've read it when I was fourteen, after watching the anime show. I went through so much reading it! At first, it was extremely funny, sweet and inocent. Then, we start knowing the story behind each character deeply, understading their actions and why they are like this; the character development was everything. Believe me, it is truly beautiful, but I needed some tissues back then.

My favourite back story was Tooru's, my sweet onigiri girl. She's a sweet, kind an innocent girl, that isn't annoying -to my taste-. I wasn't expecting it, and made me so sad; so did her mothers story.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Her mother story was truly sad, so I was glad that her friends turn out fine -because it resemble their kind of relationship.

Ten years later, if I tried to read it again it probable wouldn't feel the same, but I remember it with happines.

This is a great starting series into early 2000's shoujo manga, but i think a lot of people look back at it with rose-colored lenses. The manga itself has its share of flaws that can make the series hard to complete. I couldn't get over how annoying I found many of the characters. They seemed too much like simple stereotypes and not actual, fleshed-out people.

This manga has always been and always will be heartwarming. Yes there are some problematic aspects but it is a old manga, the central lessons we are taught brighten the heart. It deals with depression in a very real sense, sometimes those who smile the most are the most broken and the friendships that are developed win my heart.

This is definitely one of the best manga out there!! Great story, heart-wrenching backstories, series mixed with funny and nothing is black or white. This is the manga that got me started to love anime and manga.

It's Fruits Basket. Why are you even wondering if you should read it? Just read it!

If you're a manga fan, this is one of the like, top-twenty you absolutely need to read, because that's how much of an impact Fruits Basket has had.

A lot of people are very confused at the super high ratings, and I have a very brief and honest explanation: because it's deceptively simple. The worth isn't in the premise or even the character themselves, although I like both. The meaning is behind the dialogue: the moments Tohru is able to reach into other characters' hearts to see what it is they're truly afraid of and in turn is able to cleanse and purify those anxieties. And this is the gem of the manga: Tohru's airy nature that everyone writes off as silly paired with her ability to truly view and understand the very core of someone's being. Natsuki Takaya has so many layers of depth to her interactions, and there is so much meaning a reader can distill from the things that are said.

No matter what sort of a life you're living, I all but guarantee you'll be able to take something away from this one.

Too many relationships

This manga has flashes of brilliance - I've read it multiple times and still get chills when Tohru first sees Akito. At other times it's just okay. The plot revolves around how the zodiac members form interpersonal relationships with others while connected with Akito, but I don't see the necessity of virtually every character ending up in an (often coincidential and contrived) romantic pairing. For instance the Ritsu pairing, Hatori pairing #2, Kyo's master pairing, even Yuki's eventual pairing - what value do these add? I couldn't tell whether the author was trying to make herself feel good, trying to make readers feel good, or implying that true fulfillment can only be achieved by finding love. But ultimately this is a manga about 'being saved' where the characters are basically helpless and unable to achieve any growth through personal strength or self-reflection.
