my friend got me hooked on this series, telling me that I acted like the female version of this character named momiji. She taught me how to read manga and even lent me her volumes, until I got impatient and couldn't wait for the next releases (2 - months later....). Anyways. LOVE this manga! maybe I'm biased, since it was the very first manga I ever read, I guess that could be it. Either way, I loved it. There are the few characters I liked in the beginning, but nearing the end I wanted to strangle. Kagura was the only one I hated from the very beginning to the end - mainly because I love, love, did I say LOVE Kyo!!!! =D I have always loved the zodiac and I began to quickly LOVE manga and so I found fruits basket as a good balance between both. =D for me, the best of both worlds
I love how the story progresses, growing from this little light easy to read story to a more in depth one that pulled at various emotions, mainly because I couldn't stop laughing and thus I'd cry and then get angry with myself for crying at such a stupid moment. <-- joking. =P
I found the characters intrigue (well all but Kagura) and I loved getting to know them.
Overall, I LOVE, LOVE LOVE THIS MANGA! and I highly recommend to any first timer manga reads. Good story to start with, easy to read and it builds in intensity, which I find is a must in ALL stories! =D

Okay, I am a bit biased since this was the first manga I ever read but....
I LOVE THIS SERIES.
It will always have special place in my heart. It was my first manga series.
What I love about this shoujo is the fact that it has all elements of a good plot. On the surface, it is a light-hearted romantic comedy.... but it has darker elements as the story goes on. The curse on the family adds a tragic element to the plot that complicates everything.
I love this manga because it has everything: Intense drama that still maintains a comedic charm, with a bit of romance.
Yay!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I loved this manga but there were a lot of things that bugged me. first was kagura, i cant stand kagura forcing herself on kyou all the time and then hitting everyone, even hitting Tohru. i hate how they all dance like monkeys for that brat akito. i hate how they turned Akito from an interesting mentally disturbed guy into a weak pathetic woman who clings to the men around her. i still dont get why she went from liking Shigeru (Sp? sorry i dont remember the exact spelling of the character names) to sleeping with Kageru (sp?) And Shigeru, was worse i know he was hurt by her betraying him but why would he sleep with the mother of the girl he likes? yuck. the manga started off as a funny manga with serious undertones, into a soap-opera. i swear almost every character has parents that hated them, they ALL had tormented pasts. its like i get it, already! how many times must the author show us parents not loving their kids, and then here comes Tohru to heal everyone! Sheesh! i hated how they turn akito from a cruel psycho guy to a kind forgiving person, it happened way too quickly, this person psychologically damaged and destroyed lives and in an instant turned into a loving person. wtf? Also, despite the author saying that Kyo was the man she chose for Tohru from the beginning it seemed to me that the author was leaning towards Yuuki in the beginning with how Tohru had a crush on him and the tension between them and all of the sudden it disappeared. also, yuuki was so dramatically changed that i hated it, he was the cool person in the beginning with a sweet character, but after awhile he came off as a sissy smiling like anb idiot all the time and just acting strangely. though i still did like him but the change was weird and so was how he ended up with some random girl. we hear the back story of EVERYONE even the unimportant characters. Also the curse was randomly cured for no apparent reason, if it was so simply to fix why wasnt it broken before. Also i was seriously bothered by the death of tohrus mom and how Kyo didnt try to help her because he would "transform" couldnt he just grab her arm and pull her back? he wouldnt have transformed, or yell out a warning? Tohru was more worried about Kyo feelings than the death of her mother. despite everything there was great stuff about both kyo and yuuki, and i liked them both throughout the story even though there was stuff i didnt like. they are both sweet guys and i did love them both. i did like the friendship aspect how everyone learned to like eachother and bonded together. that was unique and how not everyone fell inlove with tohru was refreshing.

Just that one word can describe this story. When I first started reading this series I was completely into it, but I broke off of it for a long time and just now finished it and I have to say, it was a very romantic and happy story. There was the tragedy, the hate, the unwanting, the unforgivefulness but the whole story was amazing. Everything fit into the spots. There were times I was confused but my confusion was cleared up very fast and I just loved this series.
If anyone wants a story with plot twists, angsty, loving, hateful, comedy filled, and all around wonderful plot this is a story for you.

I saw the anime first (English dubbed lol), and was not satisfied with the ending at all. About a year or two later I watched the Japanese subbed version and searched up this manga, hoping to find a more satisfactory ending and yess I got what I wanted.
At this point, I was beginning my anime/manga/otaku etc etc life.
So yes, this manga was one of the first that I've read (and it's quite lengthy).
I admit that this manga is like any other shoujo+romance+blahblah manga but something about it just makes me love it completely. Maybe it's because it's one of my first mangas I've read.
Or maybe it's because there are so many shoujo mangas out there that can really piss you off with an annoying character or something--not this one!!
Although published in the year 1998, the artwork is up to par with many of present-day's artwork. So that's a big bonus for me. I can't stand looking at those really old school drawings (even if the plot is excellent) :\
Well anyway, this manga has everything you'd want in a shoujo manga without having an annoying main female lead!

This is one of the most amazing manga I have ever read. Sure, some chapters are slow, but Fruits Basket touches on many, many emotions with a brilliant plot. A great read.

The thing I love about Fruit's Basket is the amount of time it spends on the characters, their past, their feelings, their development and the problems caused by their curse rather than focusing on the powers it gives them. The way not every guy falls madly in love with Tooru but to each person she meets her kindness takes on a different meaning and I love the way the idea that even the most popular and beautiful people can feel so terribly lonely is addressed. Points knocked off because Tooru was so kind and forgiving it made it annoying at times and unrealistic. Towards the end though instead of everything neatly falling into place the fact that change takes time was mentioned which I think deserves some credit. Very angsty at times and emotional, didn't make me cry but might to those moved by such things, still a good story.
