Amazingly addictive

Though I'm not sure if manga fans would love light novels, but if anyone is interested I would suggest Chrome Shelled Regios. The main character is very unique as his start as not physically weak and becomes stronger as the series progresses but the opposite, though not the strongest but very very far ahead than the others but personality weak that gets more mature as the series progresses. There is character development in each one of them, you can especially make a contrast between the characters because of totally different perspective between them. And what's more is it has harem element meaing it has different types of "moe" girls that is attracted to the main character but on a "subtle romance" level

shounen fighting harem series that takes itself a bit too seriously sometimes.
my biggest problem with it was actually the characters rather than plot or fighting scenes.
the main character in this series is one of the most indecisive and wishy-washy MC i have ever read (even tsuna from hitman reborn was better).
his physical abilities are amazing but he starts the series as vague and mentally weak. as the arc progresses he gets better/ stronger (like a typical boys action series novel).
then comes the next arc and bam, he is back in exactly the same position (mentally) that he was in in the first novel. this doesn't happen with one arc, but with almost ALL of them; there is growth throughout the arc but at the start of the next one he is back in the exact same spot feeling lost and sorry for himself and acting like his friends don't matter.
he has apparently failed to learn anything from the previous experience and by vol 15 it gets very old and very repetitive.
i know the author probably thought he was too overpowered and so needed a handicap but really...i found myself disliking him more and more each time his mental state reset to the beginning of the series (and it made me wonder why any of the girls would stick with him).
he's my second least favorite character in the series (my least favorite being leerin).
no wonder the manga focuses more on nina.

Need a long breath for this

There was rarely a LN like this which had so many negative 'rumours' floating around. Most of them are not true. It is not true that the Main Character wents completely Emo for 2 Volumes, it's also not true that he is constantly reverted to square one and it is also not true that he doesn't get stronger. Maybe it's because of bad spoilers which influenced this atmosphere about this LN, but it's definitly not from the text.

I'm not saying that the LN doesn't have issuesl It does. A problem is for example the string of direct speech which leaves you confused for a moment after a character had 2 lines in a row and one tries to figure out where that was. It also lacks details/aftermaths at some very interesting points. It also loaded itself with more background story than necessary. The Side storys are barely any fun, some don't add anything at all, the ridiculous and funny ones often have a 'no one remembers anything'- end.
But there are things it does very well. It's the mental development of a few characters (not all). Yes it is very slow, but it's constant. People don't change within a day. They might temporarly adopt the thinking of others but their true nature will shine through again.
It's also stated why the Main Character is so bad dealing with other people, but it comes quite late into the story.
If you don't have patience this is not a Light Novel for you. If you stay with it and tolerate the 2-3 asspulls there will be scenes in this Light Novel that makes you think at the end 'Yes, I don't regret spending my time on it'.

I'll rate it as 10/10 not because it deserves it technically, but it gave me enough back for the invested time to make that rating possible without a bad conscience.

Until V14...

It was an amazing read, I read 14 volumes in three days and... at the end of the 14th I just couldnt stand it. You can partially understand, pity or expect Layfon to improve himself when the story gets serious, also with Leerin, you manage to understand her position, specially with their emotional issues, and even more with their circumstances in the 13th and 14th volume, with Layfon, you even partially condemn the other characters who disregard him entirely even after he finally puts up an effort, but it just turns out that he is a total moron and that feeling of partial understanding, pity or expectations turn 180º into just one word "IMBECILE". Now I must take a "KnR reading holiday" so my anger can disappear so I can keep reading with some acceptable objectivity afterwards.

By the way, Leerin is another imbecile of another degree.

Note: Until I finish reading the complete LN, I'll put a temporal 6 out of anger.

Below average novel

Couldn't get into this novel. Didn't like the characters, didn't like the stupid choices they made. The annoying piss-ant attitude of the mc doesn't help. There's also quite a few plothole here and there.

Thought the story had an interesting background story but execution was very lacking. If I had to say to categorise this, I'd say this is one of the more mediocre Japanese novels I've read.
