Serious story, rare gem

There are people I know who like serious stories and read mainly seinen. Quite of a few these don't really like or feel like reading shounen ai (or yaoi) partly due to the "fluff" factor or their unease with homosexual content. This is the manga I recommend them (unless they are really homophobic that is).

The storyline of this manga is very much like those we see in seinen rather than the usual shoujouesque mainstream shounen ai. It is serious, it has thriller-like moments, it has action, and it definitely has drama and not "jealousy-misunderstanding-jealousy"-cycle-style drama common in shounen ai and shoujo.

The story is set in quite a dystopian setting, in a very realistic manner too, so if you like dystopias [like me], this definitely might be a good read for you. Shounen ai moments are [so far, I've read until chapter 17] not overtly done; they actually feel quite realistic and natural as well. Let me also warn you, this is so far a quite sad story and while there is a tiny bit of hope, I don't expect it to have a happy ending; definitely not a "happily-ever-after-for-everybody" ending.

So if you want to read a serious manga with a serious story, high-quality storytelling, intricate plot, and decent art, go ahead and read this.

Yaoi with deep plot

Its so rare to find a yaoi where:
1.Main guy is not raped by his love interest
2. Plot is centered in the hard life of the protagonist, not in the romance.
3. Bittersweet feeling at every single chapter.
Well I finally found one. Acid Town is amazing. I have so many feeling while reading it. A masterpiece, seriously. The mangaka´s other work Sora wo daite oyasumi is also a masterpiece. She is a GREAT mangaka. Finally a yaoi mangaka who actually cares about putting a decent detailed plot in her manga. God bless her!

People likes to compare Acid Town with Sora wo Daite Oyasumi because those two are the on-going series Kyuugo sensei is working on right now.

At first you might think that Acid Town is heavier and darker - street life, yakuza, rape, drugs, betrayal and the likes. It seems to have more action and emotional roller-coaster rather than the school-themed, slow-paced Sora wo Daite Oyasumi.
However when you keep reading both, you'll realize that Acid Town offer a lot of hopes and way outs. All the characters are struggling to live even in the worst circumstances - they fight in their respective ways - friends become enemies, enemies become friends, but all of them keep the will to survive. - Which makes me think that this isn't as depressing as it seems, compared to that other series by Kyuugo.

I'm not a person who usually reads shonen-ai or yaoi, but this one in particular really made me stop and look. The art was absolutely beautiful and the drama and plot was fascinating. It's definitely a level higher than most yaoi and shoujo manga I've read, especially on the issue of love and rape. (If you haven't noticed most yaoi and smutty shoujo, the main character is, "no i dont want to have sex," and the person is, "oh yeah u do"). If its rape, its rape. I like the depth of the characters too. They are very human, and it breaks my heart to see what they have to go through. Excellent manga.

Kyuugou has created some of my favorite Manga and definitely ranks in my top 3 of favorite Mangaka. When I first saw Acid Town I knew I was in love. The characters in it are beautiful and broken in such a delightfully interesting way. I have absolutely no complaints other than the slow updates.

Even though I normally wait longer to make a comment until more chapters are out, I love this manga and think it shows potential. Kyuugou is an amazing artist it's a shame he releases so irregularly, i though there would never be a Vol.2.

Wow, this is one amazing read. Being a long-time lover of BL when I first read the description, I was expecting the same old stuff (it was only by the grace of seeing Kyuugou's name as the mangaka that kept me going), but this is quite dark and deep. The art is beautiful - it's simple, but that simplicity makes it pretty amazing. The story itself is not particularly new, but the way Kyuugou handles this blows other such storylines out of the water. The characters are my favorite part of this story. Yuki and co. are so human that it's heartbreaking to see what they go through, and you definitely connect with what each character feels. This manga stayed with me so long after, that every single BL (actually manga in general) paled in comparison. I love Kyuugou and all of her (his?) works, and this one, I personally think, is her best. The only con - releases aren't too fast (*sigh).

EDIT: Had to add this after I saw the above two reviews (had a mini celebration in my head after realizing that I wasn't the only one who completely hated rape in bl) - read all of Kyuugou's other works if you want to see rape treated as rape. Most of her other stuff is dark, but they're great reads that delve into the darker side of the human psyche.

This manga is great! I love love love the art and I love the relationships between each of the characters. They're complicated. Plus I love the background to Yuki. I actually don't know who Yuki will end up with (if anyone at all) which is nice because its sooo not predictable. smile I wish there were more chapters!

This is the first actually. The characters NEED Jesus. Allah, messiah, Buddha or lady luck. They need some higher power because DAMN! I did not need to read this right before bed. Like fu*k. I don't think I ever cursed in a review. Life's a cold b that'll shoot you in the face and the back. Well, this was sad, depressing, and I was angry enough to shoot some characters. Like back the f off Yuki. He already has too much bs to deal with, but Kyuugou keeps popping a cap in all her characters butts. I definitely need a light hearted comedy before bed.

This one, my friends... This one is utterly A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
I don't know where to start but one thing's for sure : it's a fucking masterpiece.

Who said yaoi doesn't have plot ? Who said yaoi is only about buttsex and cheesy relationships ? Who said yaoi is the dead end of mangas ?
OMG whoever ever thought that before will be completely stunned while reading that majestic piece of art !

Everything in this manga is soooo well-done I have no words to describe it.
At first I thought it was your typical crappy yaoi (something like : "you're gonna pay me back by having sex with me", "NO ! Whyy~~", "I know you want it !...". And bit by bit they're gonna fall in love and go beyond a physical relationship. But then shitty love triangle with the childhood friend... Ahem. Well I've read so many shitty yaoi I could basically write up the story xD).

Hopefully it didn't go in that direction AT ALL.
This manga has a seinen vibe. It's really deep and psychological.
Every character was badly hurt in their life. Everyone has secrets and they're fighting/trying to get revenge. But truth is they were just unlucky, and justice doesn't exist in the yakuza world. They really curse their own situation.
They have been tainted by their hardcore past and some seem to have real psychological problems, but even so they're just humans so you can't dislike them. Even the evil ones fascinated me : they really have no values. The only thing they stand for is a "code of honor" that doesn't even follow human rights (the world of yakuza is really ruthless). It really got me to think !
Female characters here are top-notch too !
Each character goes in the front row at one point so we learn all their stories. The all thing kinda works like a puzzle and each new chapter adds a new piece. The plot is so well thought-out, everything is so logical, so realistic, so freaking awesome...!!

And can we talk about the art ?? OMG IT IS FA-BU-LOUS !!!

But what got to me the most were the feelings. OMG it's as if i've been ran over by a truck.
The angst is so real it had me dying !!
I swear I felt so bad for the characters I couldn't even cry ! More like I wasn't allowed to cry !! They were so strong, so cool, fighting with everything they got. They didn't cry so I felt like I couldn't either (but tears still fell down).

Once you'll have read it you won't ever dare to complain again.
Now everytime I'm in a "bad" situation I'm like : "Girl. U serious ?? You pathetic little human ! Are you desperate ?? NO !! Have hopes disappeared ?? NO !! You don't live in Acid Town so get yourself together already !! Lift up your head and FIGHT"

If you haven't understood it yet : beware it's heavy stuff. So do yourself a favor and don't read it before sleeping.
Because I remember that when I caught up with the releases (I read everything in one go. I was sooo hooked !!) I felt so dead inside I didn't know what to do anymore... Just WOW.

MASTERPIECE I tell you ! :'(
