in this case the art >>> story
by Tiamat

Rating: 6.0  / 10.0
I've been following this manga for years and now that it's finally completely translated (big thanks to hellz0ne) I'll do a little review. I see the reviews tend to be polarized, very love or hate and that is understandable.

The artwork in my opinion is amazing. Battles are dynamic and exciting. The style of the battles is rather unique compared to other action mangas due to the focus on psychic energy and the ways in which this can be used. This is certainly the selling point of the manga.

The story is in a word, nonsense. The story merely serves as a vehicle for more cool battles. The "normal" character interactions and story progression are fine but the overall plot is full of plot holes and makes little sense. The characters are a mixed bag with a decent number of likable characters as well as a lot of characters who behave in very inconsistent, confusing ways. I found Shuuichi and the "good" female characters very appealing but many of the other characters are a mess. One second they are killing puppies for fun (not literally) next minute they are all nice and chummy.

There is a lot of dark, cruel stuff in this manga. Implied rape, strong violence, deaths, etc. However, bad guys (very ambiguous who is a bad guy in this manga btw) tend to survive and be portrayed as decent people thereafter (unrealistically). There's little justice going on here. Not exactly Hokuto no Ken/Souten no Ken.

edit: I'm dropping the score to a 6. i just dont have fond memories of this anymore because the story is so stupid and all the dumb crap that happened to haruka. artwork is so good though...*sigh*

BAD BAD BAD

Wow, in the beginning and in the middle of the story, I thought that this manga had some potential of becoming a fun read. But closer to the end, it just felt that the author got bored with it and needed an excuse to end it. The ending was CRAP. I strongly urge you NOT to read this manwha and waste your time, if you have not done so yet.

Senseless Battling, but Addictive

I really can't say that this is a good manga. Pointless fights, overdramatic action, not knowing who the real good guys and bad guys are,the mediocre story, ect. But why is it addictive? Its because of the pointless fights and overdramatic action.

Any guy out there (including myself) who loves this kind of action would love this kind of thing and would just want to read it to see what happens next until the end. I think the story was crappy, ending was crappy, and the characters were crappy, but the action was sick.

You either love it or hate it, but your welcome to give it a try.

Mediocre.
Yet, it's not like people really care if it
didn't have that one kind of depth and
meaning to every chapter. People do read
Air Gear and Tenjou Tenge after all.
If you do like senseless battles, then this
one might be for you. If not, get real and
don't read action shounen. We all know that there's
nothing but tits and brainless fights to it.

NEVER READ THIS SERIES
by Josear

A frustrating series were there is no logical point in the reactions of every character, in a way to put it, the series walkthrought 10 volumes in which at leats 87% of the chapters, never show a final destination.

In a way we got the main character who's personality is segmented and changes like the weather, adding a vendetta spirit that he has but never shows.

Now there is no manga like this one when it comes to bad guys, the are over the top, no evil fella can compare to zero's, which meaby lead you to read the series and end into a total deception. A really bad series, This can be seen as the authors first work because all his other manwha are really great pieces of art, but this one is definitely a 0 like his name

Fatality, Mortality, your enemy head roll on floor, your friend body part all vaporize leave only single arm , rape, mind rape, some cruel thing that you never imagine or seen , incest sex relation between main character , lover kill each other, gentleman last volume be insane murderer in next volume, cute & nice girl suddenly turn to be killer, bad guy turn to be good guy with no reason etc.

If you look for something so-out-of-reason-and-reality and cruel events , here you go, read this !

How can people read this

I gave this a try. I really did. Lot of fighting, lot of killing, lot of sexual violence. If thats your thing. You like a nonsesnsical story with tons of violence, both sexual and physical, then sure, I suppose this might be ok. If you like your stories to make some kind of sense, rather then be filled with plotholes and idiocy. If you like the characters to react realistically, then this is not the manga for you.

I don't know why people were commenting about how great the art was either. I didn't think it was very good. Certainly not up to the standards other manwha and manga reach. I'd rate it mediocre, not bad, but definitely not great.

Overall I hated this story. Everything I don't like in a story it has. Most of the stuff I do like in a story it doesn't have. I gave it 1, if I could rate it lower, I would. Nothing to see here. Find a decent story elsewhere.

good read

One of the few korean manhwa that i find really enjoyable and a real page turner. I usually get turned off by the main protagonists' character in korean manhwa (somehow they always seem like selfish bastards to me), but it was not the case for Zero. Like others have mentioned, the characters do seem rather unrealistic in their abrupt changes at times (like when that liede/leede apprentice ESP who broke akira's sister's arm is shown to be incredibly cruel, then later is just labelled as a nice guy who isn't honest about his feelings), but overall i found the action, story and pacing very enjoyable. I also like the fact that there are multiple characters who are really strong, unlike certain genres of shounen manga where only the main characters gets ridiculously stronger over time and it becomes a real bore since you know he will never lose a fight (e.g. History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi)

PS: I forgot to mention one thing, and that is the starting can be confusing/a turn off. I actually tried to read this manhwa twice. The first time the confusing beginning and the art turned me off, but after I grinded through the 1st 2 chapters or so, I really started to enjoy it more.

Fight scenes are nice, and plot is intricate and all, but the characters kind of turn me off. Their personalities are really unbelievable; it's almost like they aren't the same person half the time. One character goes from "rapist" to super-nice kid. Main character changing is also nice, since he was kinda lame in the beginning, but he changes too abruptly, with no real warning. At least his core-personality remains intact. Pretty good manhwa, though, I have to admit, and I might have sounded too nitpicky to justify my score.

Started well, and then crashed and burnt.

When I started reading this, I was hooked instantly. The characters seemed interesting, there was a lot of mystery, a seemingly complex back story, and very detailed world. Then I'm not really sure what happened. As far as I can tell, the author just gave up even trying to make this into something decent, or even readable. It descending into prolonged, over exaggerated, senseless fights with no character really having a clear motive for why they did literally anything at all.

The entire last half felt rushed, but it also seemed to drag as I couldn't quite work out where all this was going to. Plot devices were introduced and then abandoned for no reason (why even bother with the school aspect?), sometimes entire characters just fell by the wayside. Other characters did a complete 180 personality wise, but not in a believable or logical way, and random characters just popped up for no other reason than to start fights or as some weak attempt at adding drama.

SPOILER
Everyone always went on about the main character being unhumanly strong due to being the product of an experiment, and then they introduced another character who was intended to control the MC. Only she didn't do jack as far as I can tell. But it's ok, because the Korean's have humans who are stronger than the inhumanly strong genetic experiments anyway, so all is well. OH, but actually, the genetically cloned(?) non-psychic sister/mother/lover (seriously, wtf is she) is actually stronger than everyone. Confused? Yeah, I was as well.

Add to this the fact that half the mysteries introduced aren't even touched on again, let alone explained. Like how an organising that was doing human experiments so inhumane that 2 young children took it on themselves to run away and hide in the countryside, and developed a trauma deep enough to fear the very name of said organisation, managed to turn itself around in just 3 short years to became a kind, generous, protective organisation fully staffed with members who were never part of the old organisation, (yet know their secrets) and even managed to start an ESP school. And this isn't even the more frustrating plot hole/random piece of information left woefully unexplored.

In short, read this if you want a time-killer and aren't too bothered about the actual plot making sense. Points go to the pretty epic battle scenes, and the initial good start.
