This is a must read manga.
I first read this when i was in grade 5 or so, and i just finished re-reading it today-ha! Although i had already read it, i still laughed, cried and loved this manga all over again. The characters, even the side characters are all lovable and realistically developed. Its nice to see how they all grow up and transform over the course of the manga. The romance is very intense and you can feel it flying off the pages! I'm surprised at how intense Tsukasa is..haha! The mighty Tsukasa who would never look at girls and was never interested in love actually fell in love--and fell super hard! I also have to add something about Rui--Tsukasa and Rui BOTH are adorable. I actually cheered for both of them--and i really appreciate the relationship that Rui and Makino have. The mangaka created an amazing world-- Domyouji's house, Makino's appartment, and the emergency exit. You can tell that it was well thought out. I also liked how at the end, the author showed us glimpses of all the side characters, so she tied everything up! That was nice.
Of course, despite this being an awesome tale, it does have its flaws. The art-- at first was a turn off, however i'm glad that i kept on reading, because the art drastically evolves. Its kind of funny because the drawing style makes them look younger than the way they were drawn in the beginning. Also, the length may see long, but once you get hooked, the story flies right by you and you feel sad once you reach the end and want even MORE. This is probably because its a bit slow paced. I really loved this manga, but after 100 chapters or so were the story began dragging on and lost some of its touch. It became overdramatic to my liking..with the constant twists and turns preventing Tsukasa and Makino from being together. JUST LET THEM BE TOGETHER DAMNIT.. thats what i thought haha. Especially the part where
As much as i loved Makino for the most part, nearing the end she started to annoy me-- not telling Tsukasa things and always hiding the truth. I felt like she was always weak inside and that she hides her true self underneath that shield of strength. Like i said earlier, the manga lost its intensity (at least for me) and the atmosphere definitely changed.
Nonetheless, the awesomeness of this manga makes up for the flaws, and i do believe that this is a truly great read. If you don't read this, you're missing out! Seriously. Don't judge a book by its cover. This lesson is inside and outside this manga Makino would have never known that Tsukasa isn't very bright, and also quite childish but manly and kind, or that Soujiro has depth to himself, or that Rui isn't that cold.
And I really believe in Tsukasa and Makino! The rollercoaster romance they have, all their memories together and obstacles they overcame/overcome, i really believe that they'll be able to keep loving each other for a long time

Tsukasa lost his memory-- i guess it made Makino realize how much she treasured Tsukasa, but the length of that arc was so unecessarily long..
the second time i read it i skipped the whole part which was 20 or so chapters? If you are questioning whether or not to read read it, I only have one thing to say... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD READ IT!!!!!!!
This manga will always have a special place in my heart. It wasn't the first manga I read, and definitely not the last. But this manga had something. Something that made me go completely insane. I literally lived, ate and breathed Hana Yori Dango for about a year. Eagerly waiting for the scanlations to upload and trying to find time to read it... And re-read it. I can absolutely say, that no manga, no book or movie EVER made me as obsessed as this story made me. I couldn't stop thinking about the plot, the characters. It's just simply addictive!! This is pure genius! It's got everything: great plot, wonderfull characters wich you learn to both love and hate, and surprising twists and turns when it comes to the relationships and events following the main characters.
I sincerely urge you to read this manga. If you don't, I'll haunt you in your sleep >]
Joke aside, I actually have trouble findig words to how much this manga has affected me and how much I love it. And I'm not saying it as an otaku, I'm saying it as any person with a sane mind would say about any story wich you could relate to and learn from. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it makes you angry. It's simply just wonderful.
I've watched the anime and the dramas... and well, they don't live up to the manga, but that's expected with them. Usually the book/manga is always better than the movie.
But I've been a little afraid of reading the others of her works, like "Cat Street". I know it's not Hana Yori Dango, but I'm afraid I'll compare them too much. Is there anyone out there who's read other mangas from this Mangaka? And did you think it was worth it?

I highly recommend this manga. It's funny, sad, making angry, joyful to read, one of a kind! Although the drawings are a little bad (especially at the beginning, but they become progressively better as the story progresses), I just can't help but read and reread this series. Kamio Youko is a great mangaka and I love the stories that she draws. To make it short, READ HANA YORI DANGO AND YOU'LL LOVE IT!

For starting in 1993, it's pretty impressive that this manga still holds up today even in the early bits. Although there is certainly a difference in the quality and style of the artwork, the change happens very gradually and is not disruptive. In fact it's kind of cool to see her style evolve, especially if you've read her later series Cat Street before.
Actually, I would have to say that I love the first half of the series, maybe even first 2/3rds but the last part is sort of boring...
However, I do feel like a lot of the problems with the manga came from the long length and distribution over the years. It would be hard to keep up the same tone in the storyline that long! But even though it has faults, the manga remains one of the shojo greats! It may seem a bit cliched today but it does the cliches right and, well, probably was one of the mangas that inspired the cliches. Definitely worth a read for any Kamio Yukio fan but also for anyone who likes more "mature" shojo.

There was a certain point, after Makino went to New York the first time, I was sort of...over the whole Romeo and Juliet-esque "we can not be together because of our families" thing. Not only did Domonji's mom suck hardcore style but Makino's family was idiotic as well. Actually, Makino's family was so annoying I started skipping over scenes of them.
I was also at that point secretly routing for Rui and was all sad face when Makino did take him up on his fabulous adorable Rui-ness. They were so natural with each other in a way that is probably go to always bug Domonji. Heh heh heh, Rui will probably milk that for all it's worth.

I look at the art, the cover of the last volume.
No. That's definetly not Hana yori Dango, it just can't be. I look again at the title. I still don't want to believe it, I refuse. How can such horrible art get so much better?
The characters actually look nice....? Why?
Why wouldn't the mangaka start already with such a nice art style? I - and surely lots of other people - would have read it. Maybe even till the end, who knows. But like this, I don't want to read Hana yori Dango. Stupid characters, stupid story line.... I would have born it if at least the art was good. But it isn't just one volume with horrible art. It's more.
By the way, I would love to recommend it to all hardcore-shoujo-fanatics (& my enemies ).

I've read shoujo for MANY years, and I've never read this classic. I'm glad that I finally did read it. Even though Hana yori Dango is OVERLY SUPER STUFFED with clichés, it wears these with style. It is the ultimate shoujo love story, and the series is so long (over thirty volumes ftw!), that you can't but fall in love with Makino, the F4 and all the other characters (gosh there were many characters, I had to write all the names down on paper to keep track of them all).
It is amazing that this manga has kept me entertained through out all volumes. The moments where I felt irritated were few, and the art is characteristic and sweet. If you don't love it from the start, don't worry - it'll grow on you. <3
One thing though. Poor scanlations / translations irritated me a lot sometimes! From volume 10 and forward, you'll often encounter LQ scans, but the worst is the translations. I'm rather sure that many puns and jokes were lost in translation, and it makes me quite sad, when the mangaka intended to fill in these bits to tie the plot together. *Sigh*... But I can't really complain, since I haven't bought one single volume.
Every girl who loves a sweet romance - THIS IS A MUST (as many others may have mentioned before me). But what the heck,

Tsukasa lost his memories of Makino. DAMN. That was just a tiny winy bit too cliché. And one or two volumes before it happened I thought: "No... It'd be soooooo lame if he actually lost his memory.
