the mangaka presents engaging characters, moving plot line, and a colorful backdrop for readers to dive happily into. when it becomes difficult to stay with it, as in the fishman island arc, i take a break. it's as simple as that. (that generally means rereading my favorite parts) it's a wonderful story and even the slow bits are chock-full of plot and points of interest. maybe some of us are a bit spoiled. but the manga does as well as it has because the majority of readers know that it's a quality read.

One piece is awesome. Is the kind of manga you dont like at first, but it grows on you after reading it. Character development is amazing, specially in Usopp. The plot is great, the goal isnt what it is all about is actually the journey to get there. Villains are also great, they start out simple but became grand later on, with one of them even claiming to be God. All the sidecharacters come back again at some point in the manga, they are not thrown away like in other mangas. The only thing this mangas is missing is a little more seriousness from Luffy and some romance, but I guess Oda made it this way for a reason and it works. Over all a fun adventure manga, filled with laughs, action and some drama every now and then.

I don't like reading shounen in general. But anyway, I thought i might be missing something, so I gave it a try with Bleach, Naruto and Fairy tail. When they got to 4 chapters of blow after blow with no one winning they got boring for me. I dropped them all. Then I read One Piece... and I read all 600+ chapters in 2 weeks.
I love it! the characters are consistant, the jokes make me laugh so hard, the story has a lot of potential and it's being used (unlike the others) the twists are great, just when I thought the story was gonna go this way, it surprises me, it stays One Piece, but not as I would have guessed, I love the fact that it shows what is happening to characters that were left behind and how they come back into the story (like Coby and the BW members) and, also the art just keeps getting better and better.
If before I didn't really enjoyed shounen, after reading this series the standard of what's good has become almost impossible to surpass, specially having already given a try to all the other major names.

I swear, I'm not surprised why One piece is the most popular manga at the moment biggrin The drawing might not be the best, but I really like that Oda-san's art and story aims to children and adults ^__^ I'm a bit agree that the manga loose a bit creativity due to long sagas, but every shounen does that anyway but it's still enjoyable to read it ^^ If you're too lazy to read, watch the anime then! Almost as good as the manga smile

The beginning is kiddy, and it may feel drawn out at certain times, but that doesn't change the fact that it becomes amazing. It is the only one of the 3 giants that I'm not currently reading only because I invested too much fricken time in it not to see the ending x.x. there is a decent balance of action, comedy, and bamfs... I just wish there would be some romance(bring back hancock u b*****ds >_<). As far as classic shounen goes you will find very few that can compare with this story.

Awesome manga, don't let the artwork turn you away.

I have to admit, the artwork turned me off. I couldn't get past after reading over 50 chapters. Time goes by and this series got dropped while I was concentrating on Naruto and Bleach. Then my friend got into this series and tried to pull me back into the series. I tried again. Since time had past for a long time, I was reading volumes after volumes. I got hooked onto the story when a color spread seemed to popped up at me and I was like, "Wow, his rendering skills is awesome! And after that, the storyline also pulled me in.

If you compare his beginning artwork and the present artwork, it is a big improvement. Also, his ideas are like bottomless. While Oda-sensei introduces many characters at the same time, he doesn't desert them after a short-time usage. Instead, there's back reference to them like in the chapter cover stories and their returning into the future manga plot. At first, I was annoyed that NO ONE (the villains) dies in this manga. Well, the major villains. But then I started to like it because it seems that Oda-sensei does have a role for them to play out. I think his story and characters have their uniqueness that seems to capture his fans. I feel that beside the StrawHat crew, the introducing of new characters and new adventures on each island helps fuel the storyline. While usually introducing too many characters piss me off, One Piece does it in a way where it seems to do it slowly without forcefully shove it to your face.

Another main reason is that usually pirates are associated with evil. The StrawHat crew doesn't do anything that is deemed evil, beside fighting the Navy people (the good guys). So it's your twist of good and evil.

While Naruto and Bleach fans hate One Piece, I think most of them have yet to appreciate Oda-sensei's creative ideas. Bleach is starting to piss me off ever since the FullBringer Arc (just end already!) despite its awesome choreography fights and Naruto is starting to get back on its feet during the War arc

So if the main reason is not reading One Piece is because of the artwork, don't let that turn you off. I once didn't really read it because of the artwork, but I guantee you that the artwork does improve and you'll end up not regretting picking this one up.

THE BEST

This is a must read manga. Why? Simple. He turned a simple idea as pirates into a creative and awesome plot. The artwork is simple but matches well as a shounen manga. I mean, this might seem stupid but, which other character is a gum pirate with a strawhat and looks awesome? only luffy. And his friends, they aren't just secondary, when i read One Piece, i feel they "love" each other and they NEED each other. The other mangas are just about shinigamis and most of the times, they forget that THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO IF WE'RE ALONE, and OP enphasize that.

Stop complaining just because this arc is boring, every manga has its bad moments, it doesn't mean it's going to be like this forever. Oda is really creative and he probably realise it's not good right now. Love more and hate less, if you seek for bad points, you'll certainly find. Don't seek for bad things, enjoy the good ones.

It's not the very best manga I've read, but it's frickin' good.

What makes it so special, is that it's decidedly mainstream without containing that many traits typically found in that genre. Those that you'll find are the biggest and most basic ones, simply necessary to make this manga popular enough to be called mainstream, but I think no more than that. So, it's familiar enough if you've read some manga before, but still so unique, as to satisfy almost everybody.

Now i truly understand the saying that you cant please people. For starters i love naruto but i have seen people comments about it being a typical shounen manga, so i went to the other 2 top manga bleach and one piece to see their comments and people are saying the say things about both of them too! I'm not a fan of one piece and bleach but i know its popular because they have been the top 3 for as long as i can remember. So what is it that you people want in a manga? every manga and i mean EVERY MANGA has its times. I mean you expect every chapter to be great? if you guys were under multi million dollar contracts to keep writing stories, your gonna tell me all of your stories are gonna be great? to you it might just be something to kill time but it's actually jobs to people, something to give them money and food to eat. I mean if you keep complaining about them being typical then stop reading it and read an actual book to kill time. Because i know if these writers were to stop making one piece, naruto and bleach then you guys would complain even more than it being boring. So stop complaining, no one is forcing you to read it.
